Erfurt was a stop on our bus trip from Frankfurt to Berlin. So happy that we stopped there. A beautiful historic center. The Cathedral and Saint Severus were excellent. Lunch was great. Would highly recommend even with all the tourists like us!

An impressive cathedral, well preserved, and with plenty of historic details. Full of treasures: paintings, sculptures, the altars, tombstones... A miracle of medieval-Gothic architecture.

a slightly strange Roman Catholic church. I suppose I am more used to the somewhat flamboyant style of the romantic age German churches so this beautifully built, but very austere church was a bit of a shock. the stone work is excellent, the structure elegant and spacious but it has a slightly cold feel about it with little decoration or ornateness. The building sits on a small hill giving the viewer some excellent photo shots both up at the cathedral as well as down onto the main square from the entrance. Its not the most exciting experience but it is good gothic architecture and worthy of a short visit.

As befits every respected Cathedral, St. Mary's Cathedral was built on the site of a pre-existing Church. Some historians believe that it was founded by St. Boniface, who bears the name Winfred in the world. He is considered the Apostle of all Germans. However, when it was and whether it was at this place is unknown. The first mention of 1117 appears in connection with the collapse of the Cathedral of Erfurt. Then the remains of two companions of Boniface are found on the mountain. The relics caused two consequences: a growing flow of pilgrims and a flow of donations. The Cathedral was quickly built. The main entrance to the Cathedral consists of two Gothic portals, located at an angle to each other. The most interesting inside is the choir with stained glass Windows and carved benches for singers of the XIV century. Of course, the Erfurt unicorn altar in the transept is Interesting. An unknown artist showed the unicorn as the embodiment of Christ and virtue. Lucas Cranach Sr.'s painting "The betrothal of St. Catherine" was hidden in a side altar. And, of course, the largest medieval bell in the world (1497).

This bridge especially at Christmas has a great atmosphere. Large amount of people walking the street with lots of little shops either side of the road. Can get very busy.

In the year 725 the first Erfurt church was sacred. After this there was a lot of extensions/ additions until 1372. In 1251 the still working great well known church bell "Gloriosa" was sacred. - until 1985 she was the world's largest free-swinging bell (13 tons!), now electrically. Other treasures are all the church beautiful huge glasses, from about 1370-1420. And,- not many peoples know it: Martin Luther was ordained in the cathedral on 3 April 1507! That's enough for today :)

It's a large, majestic cathedral high up on a cathedral mount. Once the 70 steps are climbed, one has a good view of the pretty town. Inside the cathedral it's cool and bright. The walls are broken up by fifteen tall, brightly colored, red, blue, yellow, and green windows; the most beautiful are from 1380 to the beginning of the 15th century. The cathedral square - a very large one - is used for Erfurts Christmas market. Erfurt itself is lovely, lots of cyclists, cafés,restaurants and colourful old buildings. Well worth a visit.

My wife and I came here towards the beginning of our tour of Germany and Switzerland. I assumed this would be a somewhat forgettable cathedral, but it was one of the most memorable ones we saw!
