Overview
More
Buchenwald (1937-1945) became a synonym for the crimes committed by the National Socialists. Until 1950, the Soviets used the grounds for a special camp; after 1958 the German Democratic Republic established the “Nationale Mahn- und Gedenkstätte” here. After 1990, the memorial was reorganized according to a new concept now also providing for commemoration of the fates of other victim groups. New exhibitions place the crimes in their historical contexts. The history of Weimar and Buchenwald provides a unique historical resonator for historical-political education work. This uniqueness lies in the proximity between the camp and Weimar as a cultural centre, and in the access thus offered to the past. We went to Sachsenhausen a few days before, and my kid was somewhat concentration camped out. However, Buchenwald feels different. While Sachsenhausen was right next to a town, Buchenwald really is in the woods. It has a beautiful and majestic view of the valleys around...More

My father in law spent almost two years in Buchenwald and was left behind by the nazies when they left the camp before it was liberated by the Americans. He was very quiet about that period of his life but I managed to convinced him...More

Buchenwald was one of the largest concentration camps. It was a work camp. We allowed two days to visit. The first day we strolled through the grounds. Few of the buildings remain and few were open (it was Monday and the museum etc was closed)....More

The memorial offers valuable information about the horrors human kind is capable of. I would not say the visit is pleasant, but no doubt l think one has to visit such a place at least once in life to remember how fortunate we are.

Tough to get my head around the terror and suffering that occurred here. If you are in or near Weimar make the effort to attend, it is well worth it.

I sobbed my way through this camp. I don't need to explain what happened here--we all have heard the horror stories and have seen the movies. But to actually go there made it come to life for me. There was a video presentation first that...More

Went here with very mixed feelings, which continued throughout the visit. Pretty sure you will feel the same. While this "site" is much smaller in size and scale than others, it gives a pretty good idea. And to leave it at that. In a way...More

A bus outside town needed to view the vast, quiet remains of a combined concentration and death camp. This is where Gen. Eisenhower had the townspeople walk to view the wretched remains of what they allowed by their silence and complicity.
