The Cathedral of Almeria primarily served as a fortress (after it was built in the 16th century) in defense of the many pirate (Corsair) raids from North Africa (the Barbary coast). The Cathedral square was a main center for various Inquisition processes. Contrasting this violent exterior history is a lovely most tranquil interior.

Well worth visiting when in Almeria. Minimal entrance fee with audio included which was most informative. Amazing architecture.

When we toured they were painting inside so the fumes were though to tolerate so we hurried the tour. But it is beautiful inside and informational headphones are offered and helpful. Worth a visit.

In pleasant palm tree square. Montenegro cafe to sit and listen to the deafening bells chiming. Payable entrance fee. Can't comment as I didn't venture in.

The ‘Cathedral’ is one of the major attractions in Almería. It was designed as a place of prayer and of war, when it was built in the sixteenth century. This was because the shores of Almería were continually under attack from Turks and Berbers and so it was designed as a place of refuge as well as worship. It was... More

It is one example of cathedral and fortress. Located in the center of the city, the main entrance in a small interesting square. The elaborately carved choir stalls are very nice and the cathedra is located in the choir as well. The cloister deserve also close attention. Everything is include in the entrance fee.

This is a very ornate cathedral in the grand style and there is quite a lot to see. The audioguide included in the entrance fee is informative. The cloisters are a peaceful place to sit and contemplate.

This is one of my favourite places. The Cathedral itself is built like a fortress with no windows ,solid ,imposing.Big wooden doors,. Enormous tall palm trees in the square, Excellent hotel aptly named Hotel Catedral -upmarket with a small rooftop pool. Slightly more expensive than other hotels but worth it. Excellent tapas and food. Staff excellent too. Its tables spill... More

The external architecure of the cathedral is interesting but inside is a bit poor (comparing to other great cathedral). I find entrance fee quite high for seeing it (especially that it is a church that should be open for everybody).
