During the late 1990’s, while getting my graduate degree; I didn’t know it then, my supervisor was of the Jewish faith. Remembering John, I admittedly studied Moses Maimonides before coming to the Cordoba Synagogue. Maimonides is apparently the second most important person in the Jewish Faith. Similar to Thomas Aquinas in Catholicism, Maimonides studied the philosophical questions about the nature of God and the nature of God’s creation of the world. It’s very heavy reading and I would suggest being wide awake when reading the Creationism propositions. Being an engineer and scientifically minded, I always seem to come to a crossroads weighing faith versus science. Was the world created via the Big Bang theory (scientific explanation). Even if the Big Bang ends up true, didn’t there have to be a power to create the thing that went Big Bang? I was told to rub Maimonides’ shoe to bring good luck! HaHa!

Maimonides was one of the great Jewish thinkers of Córdoba. He has a statue made by the sculptor Amadeo Olmos Ruiz, which was inaugurated on June 7, 1964 at the Plaza the Tiberiades. When you see the statue it is difficult to believe that he is Jewish, when he had adopted the Moorish way to get dressed with a turban.

A monument to the memory of Rambam - Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon.
Of course there is no mention of a Spanish divorcee.
The statue was found in an area that was preserved of the Jews of Spain before the deportation, there is a synagogue in the area that can be entered for free during the day and a home of the Jews of Spain.

The best two highlights of our time in Cordoba were the Mezquita and exploring the narrow, winding white-washed streets of the historic Jewish Quarter. We came across this life-sized bronze statue of Maimonides on our way to visit the synagogue.
He sits in Plaza Tiberiades, which is only the size of a tiny courtyard. We might have walked past it but for the fact that several others were stopping and posing beside him.
There is a small plaque beneath the statue but it doesn't give much information other than his name, which is a shame. A quick google search helped us out instead.
Moses Maimonides was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and scholar with an enormous intellect. His studies were incredibly broad ranging from medicine and astronomy to law and religion.
It was very interesting and fitting, to see his statue before going to the synagogue. His life gives a real insight into the turbulent history of the Jewish Quarter.
When Maimonides was born in the 1130s, Cordoba was a tolerant, harmonious society, under Muslim rule. By the time he was a teenager, things had changed. The Almohads, a fundamentalist sect, had seized power. Initially the minority Christians and Jews were pressured to convert to Islam but persecution escalated and finally they were given just 3 choices - conversion, exile or death. By the time he was in his 20s, Maimonides and his family (along with many others) had been forced to flee from their homes.
It will only take a minute to stop by the statue but it was an interesting thing to do before the synagogue and it’s on the way.
If you continue up to the Puerta de Almodovar, you’ll see statues of the Roman philosopher, Seneca born in Cordoba in the 4th century and and Averroes, also born in Cordoba in 1126. I don't know if it was something in the water, but Cordoba has produced an impressive number of the the world’s great thinkers.

I had read about this statue, and seen pictures for years as a religious scholar. Literally had a free half hour in Cordoba so I simply followed my nose and found him. Like waiting to meet a great mind, in person. It does need a bit more promotion and publicity for Maimonides was such a significant person in Judaism and in world religious history - 'From Moses to Moses there arose none like Moses'

Maimonides was born in Córdoba in 1135, and 850 years later a statue was finally erected in his honor. Situated in the old Jewish quarter, it is a fitting memorial to one of the leading philosophers of the Middle Ages.

Situated in a small square near the old synagogue, this statue of the famous Jewish philosopher, theologian and doctor was erected in 1964. A hugely important figure in medieval Cordoba, he was forced to flee with his family when the Arabs conquered the city. Worth a visit to see this and the surrounding Jewish Quarter

Unfortunately there is no explanation for the statue or the man who is commemorated. A little history would be appropriate.

This statue is located at the jewish quarter. He was born in Cordoba. Maimonides was a rabbi, Philosopher and Physician. This statue is a tribute to him

On our first walk around the old Jewish quarter, coming across the statue of Maimonides was a lovely surprise and it became a useful landmark for subsequent visits. The statue can be found in a beautiful square (Plaza de Tiberiades) which is bordered by the typical whitewashed buildings of Cordoba. We all took turns rubbing the foot of the statue and hoping for just a little bit of wisdom to soak into us.
