El Populo neighborhood, the oldest in Cadiz. Around the Cathedral there is an old medieval district of Cadiz with narrow cobbled streets, restaurants, squares, cafes. This district is where all the active life of locals and tourists who stroll around is concentrated. You can wander through the streets, stopping off at places like the Plaza San Martin and the Roman Theatre, which dates from the 1st century BC. This way led us to the wide, beautiful Plaza de San Juan de Dios, with its emblematic buildings like the one that houses the City Council. A 10-minute walk away we found one of the most surprising places in the city: the Tavira Tower.
So, if you want to cover all the main attractions of the city - this is the place for you - the central market - Mercado Central, the flower square - Plaza de Las Flores and the La Vina district - with its numerous and very pleasant shops and boutiques, old buildings, fountains, sculptures and locals sitting on their balconies and watching the tourists.

This is apparently the oldest part of the historic quarter of Cadiz and contains the cathedral. Lots of squares and streets, both wide and narrow, make up yet another area of Cadiz to enjoy. The architecture is wonderful and reflects the wealth that Cadiz enjoyed through the ages. Pleasure from just walking around being part of the ambience. An especially nice area before the tourist buses arrive and after they leave.

One of the best things to do when visiting ports on a cruise is to explore the town/village/city where the ship docks. While a good number of our fellow travelers went to Seville, we decided to tour Cadiz on our own. Cadiz is divided into quarters or barrios. The older part of the city is referred to as Old Town and is a delightful place to be. You cannot go wrong walking down the narrow streets and large plazas where locals and tourists mingle. These are bordered by the sea and city walls. Walking the promenade along the beach is well-worth your time. Cadiz has color-coded it’s walks to assist tourists. Follow the green street line (Medieval District) to see the Cathedral, Roman theatre and Cathedral Museum. Street line orange takes you along the city’s outer defenses and includes castles and bastions. The purple street line is called Shippers to the Indies and includes Tavira Tower, Admiral’s House and some churches. Last but not least is the blue street line called Cadiz Constitution. Here you can see the palace, monument to Parliament and houses of the five and four towers. Pick up a map at the tourist information center. Tidbits: Lord Byron, an English poet, wrote “The Girl of Cadiz” when visiting here. Did you know Christopher Columbus set sail to the New Old from Cadiz in 1493? Cadiz has something for everyone. Enter from old gate in Cathedral Square close to Cathedral. Follow painted line to explore the old town of Cadiz. History all around you and plenty of places to stop for a welcome drink.

Cadiz is a great city to walk around. It is flat, not overly crowded, even when cruise ships are in town. Many cruisers go to Seville and forget that Cadiz has much to offer. Nice squares, small streets jammed with cafes and shops, and scenic views of the sea. The El Populo area lies on the Green and Red Lines painted on the street) that are self-guided tours of Cadiz. This part of Cadiz can be seen in about 30-45 minutes unless you stop to eat.

Very beautiful to walk this wonderful city, take in the shops and absorb the history, the sights, sounds & smells of all the wonderful cafes & patisserie, mmm. But don't wear stilettos

Well I have visited most of Andalucia and I LOVE Cadiz. My husband and I drove down for the day and parked along he long stretch of beach. Parking is free week-ends so go early to find a spot then we walked on the beach and into the old town where we visited the cathedral. This was ok but seen many so wasn't all that but got some great views and shots!
Walked into the old town and the Spanish lifestyle of enjoying life was evident!!! So refreshing to see they enjoy life and hanging out with friends and family. There were stalls of fresh produce, fresh seafood, loads of types of olives and cheeses and meats. WE bought stuff to take back to our house. WE enjoyed some seafood lunch and a lovely day.
Also spotted flamingos on the way out of CAdiz. Too cool. Definitely going back again.

Walking around the 'El Populo' (Old Town) of Cadiz is very nice but no different or better than taking a walk around any other old city... As well as Cadiz we walked around Seville, Granada, Ronda and Cordoba whilst in Andalucía and they are all beautiful cities in their own rights... Cadiz has the charm of being on the coast, but once in the town you'd not notice this. One useful thing that Cadiz has is some colour coded walks (Green - Medieval District, Orange - Castles and Bastions, Purple - Shippers to the Indies, and Blue - Cadiz Constitution) which involve these colour coded lines painted on the paths down the streets of the city that you can literally follow to guide you around the important attractions. The only thing is not all walks are circular - Pick up a free map from the Tourist Information kiosk in Plaza San Juan de Dios to help you. See my other reviews here on Trip Advisor for some of the key Cadiz attractions (Catedral, Torre Tavira, Mercado (Market), Plaza de las Flores, etc.).

Love the old streets, the character f the buildings and the people are warm and friendly. Going around Cadiz on foot is full of surprises and some wonderful cafes and restaurants on nearly every corner. If you are unsure, pick up a map and follow one of the coloured lines around the city, very helpful to us at the start.

charming streets dominate this picturesque neighborhood,feel the vibe of cadiz drenched in its streets,feel the history of this amazing city,for sure i recommend you to go and enjoy this area close to the cathedral,enjoy the bars the nightlife and its people.
