Great exhibits, with some practical issues
I’m in two minds about this museum. First, and most importantly, the collections and special exhibits were excellent and very well worth seeing. The archeological section on the second floor is very well chosen, shown and explained, and includes some stunning items. The art on the first floor is perhaps less broadly interesting, depending on one’s preferences, but I did enjoy the Murillos and several of the modernist pieces. The Picasso sketches were wonderful, while the Martin Parr photographs lit up my day. However, I really can’t avoid registering complaints about the grumpy and unhelpful staff, who behaved as though our presence was a bit of an imposition. I’d just highlight the comparison with the staff at the Pompidou, who similarly had to cope with explaining to us that large sections of the gallery were closed, and yet they managed to do this while remaining friendly and charming. Then there’s the appallingly bad signage and other information to guide visitors. General signposting is poor, and the floor plans do not show clearly where most rooms actually are. There’s absolutely nothing to show that the cafe and restaurant are closed until you waste your time trying to access them - why isn’t there a notice on the ground floor to say this, for heaven’s sake? Most of the lifts only access certain floors, and there’s no guidance on that until you get in and try to find buttons for the floors you want. Yes, the staff will tell you this if you ask, but why the heck do you have to ask? Yes, this museum is free (or very cheap, even if you’re from outside the EU), but I recommend doubling the price and investing the income in staff training and a bit of sensible signage. The collections and shows really are worth visiting!

Nice collection in a beautiful museum.
There is a nice collection of antiquities on the second floor and a nice collection of art on the first floor. There is an exhibit of works by Picasso on the ground floor. The building is beautiful and there are a lot of sings explaining the collection

    Fabulous Museum.
Loved our visit to the Málaga Museum. I thought that the mix of architecture and art was going to be strange, but it actually worked very very well. Beautiful building and very well laid out. The old custom house was a great venue for it. Very nice staff also. I had an Irish passport so my entrance fee was free put my wife has a British passport and she had to pay €1.50.

Imaginatively installed in the old Customs House
This is an excellent way to spend two hours in Malaga. Located in the old Customs House, the top floors house archaeological exhibits and the lower floors house an interesting permanent collection of fine art paintings, some of which are a nod to more well-known artists. There's also a collection of Picasso engravings and a temporary exhibition space on the ground floor that was showing works by Martin Parr when we visited in November 23. One tip: Before or after you've enjoyed the museum, make sure you don't fall into the "Cister Catorce" tourist trap café right next door; it's an overpriced rip off that could spoil your day.

    Lovely museum, rude staff
Beautiful building outside and stunning courtyard inside. Very cheap entry fee for non EU visitors and worth every penny. Many interesting artefacts and artwork to be seen and well laid out. Visit spoiled only by the incredibly rude staff. Would recommend a visit . . .just hope you are greeted with better staff members.

Impressive collection in a spectacular building
Great Museum, this was our second visit. The history of art in Malaga was very interesting and they had some beautiful paintings, I particularly liked the impressionism paintings and the sculptures. The building is very beautiful and I would have liked to spend more time there.

    Surprisingly large and comprehensive
For one a half euros, this is good place to visit. The archeology floor is separate from the art floor. Both are well done. If you want to split the visit into two times (and spring twice for the modest admission), that would work too and allow for leisurely visits there is more than three hours worth of gentle touring here.

    Don't miss!
I went for the art, but was so immersed in the archaeology floor, I had to come back the next day for the art and the temporary Picasso exhibit. Everything was beautifully presented with sophisticated layout. My only small disappointment was lack of the advertised museum tienda and coffee shop.

Very impressive building and nice and quiet
Had an hour or so left at the end of the day so popped in as was only 1.5 euros each (cash only) so if it wasn’t great then we hadn’t lost lots of money. Quite a lot of explanation was given in English which was good. Was very quiet when we were there so almost felt like we had the place to ourselves. Lots to see and well worth the money.

    Quiet and well laid-out
We visited this museum as it was en route into central Málaga and from the outside the building looked very attractive with soaring palm trees in front of it. The front desk staff were extremely unfriendly and hostile, barking questions at us like “Where are you from?” And not offering any information about the place. If you live in the UK you have to pay an entrance fee, which was approximately 8 euros each. Lockers available behind the front desk for a refundable 1 euro. The museum itself was well curated with some beautiful paintings, all Spanish - some by Murillo and Goya - most of whom we hadn’t heard of, but high quality. We only visited the Fine Arts section and didn’t look at the archaeological stuff. Toilet facilities on each floor. We’d visit again.

As the weather was a bit chilly we decided to pass some time in the central museum in Malaga. It is set in a beautiful building that has been totally refurbished. There is an art gallery on the first floor and archealogical relics on the second floor. All well laid out and labelled in Spanish and English which was really helpful. There are lockers for shopping /backpacks. You will need a €1 coin which you get back on colection of the items. Entry was free although the ladies on reception were far from welcoming and really need some customer care training. I dont expect people to speak English but a smile goes a long way.
There is a nice cafe on the ground floor and a restaurant on the 4th floor( didnt go up there)
Very interesting to see works of Spanish artists and the history (ancient) of the local area.

If you’re into history or art or both, this is a great to visit. Great value - EU citizens enter for free and others pay €1.50. The ancient Roman area is very good as well as exhibits on ancient Malaga. The Spanish art through the ages is impressive including a few Picasso paintings. A great 1.5 hours were spent here!

Lovely exhibition space in the centre of town set on two floors - one for art (which I focused on) and one for archaeology. It is free for EU citizens and a nominal 1.5 euro charge otherwise (I hope Brexiteers are happy!). No audio guide but a selection of the paintings had short descriptions in Spanish and English including how the pieces came to enter the collection and I found these interesting. The building is striking and there is a large accessible terrace with chairs to sit in the sun or shade.

Museum of Malaga has a huge range. It is both an Archaeological Museum and a Fine Art Museum, so I visited it twice, the first time I get to know the Archaeological side, which told about the Malaga past from the prehistory in Malaga’s cave through the Phoenician’s history and the Roman time to the islamisation of al-Andulus. It was very interesting and instructive collections from the different times of Malaga. The Fine Art’s collection was also impressive with paintings of many artists from Malaga including Pablo Picasso and from other parts of Spain. Take time to study this amazing museum and it is free of charge, so you can visit so often you want.

We spent most of a morning here and also had lunch in their first class restaurant. So much history with paintings and artifacts on view. We did this museum first so that we understood the progression of history through the region. It helped us to understand other places we visited on our various excursions.

I thought this was a rather nice museum. It looks brand new inside and out. The layout is well done and the architecture is excellent. Many items on display focused primarily on the history of Malaga and the history of humans in the region from the last several thousands of years up until the present time. Lots of sculptures, paintings, archeological items, and a number of odd but interesting items.

Free for EU citizens, otherwise the fee for entry is very nominal. Plenty of bathrooms throughout the building.

Note there is very little English. English is on the large descriptive signs as you enter each new section of the museum, otherwise all the item/artifact description signs are only in Spanish.

I visited during COVID and had the entire place to myself, which made for a pleasant experience.

We really enjoyed our visit to the museum which we stumbled upon. There's some very nice art and your learn a little about about life in Malaga. The building is beautiful.

Worth a stop if you have time. I say "stumbled" upon as the Picasso and Pompidou permanent collections were both closed so we had time on our hands.

What a lovely museum!
Saw one of my favorite painting, the one in Venice with the bridge and all the bright colors!

The museum is very nice and with many COVID retrictions in place, so you’ll feel save. A thing that I loved is that from October until December is open from 9am until 9pm! So it’s a great place to visit when it is already dark outside 😊

The museum is free of charge from all from EU, which is amazing, unfortunately there isn’t many free museums around. And it’s certainly worth your while, even if you are out of EU is a 1.5€ the entrance (I think 🤔)

Go see it 😊

This museum is free for EU residents or€1.50 for everyone else but it is excellent value. You could actually spend hours looking around if you really wanted to read all the information and study all the artefacts but we spent about 2.5 hours there and really enjoyed seeing the art on the 1st floor and then learning a lot about the history and archeology of Malaga on the 2nd floor.
The museum is housed in a very impressive building which is very spacious and has all the facilities that you might require, definitely recommended.
