A feast for the eyes and tummy
It was a great place to have a wander and the stalls are a feast for the eyes. I had lunch at the place with the photos and it was magnificent. The staff were friendly and the service was good. This place was not snooty either.it was reasonably priced and tasted amazing!

Good to visit whilst in Malaga
Interesting to see all of the wonderful Spanish food in the market. Do take time to eat at the outside fish restaurant. All cooked fresh to order. I had Langoustines which were wonderful cooked in garlic butter and my husband had oysters which he said were excellent all washed down with some good local white wine.

    The play of colours
An eye opening experience, colourful, busy with a novelty atmosphere. The food could be cooked in front of you and served at the counter bar. You chose your food and wine, they will make it and serve it for you. Amazing.

    Just loved this great market
I am a big fan of food markets and I really liked this one. Incredible seafood selection, great choices of fruits and vegetables and just about any food stuff you can imagine and it is show just to walk it, even though it is always very crowded. What a joy it is for any foodie. Just loved it.

Go, explore and try, it’s fun
Yes busy, but fun to explore. I read previous comments about people being rude and abusive. We stopped and the few stalls we bought stuff, people were friendly. We tried freshly cut ham and fizzy wine, they were great and people behind the till were happy to chat and advertise their products. I would say go and explore, be aware people selling there are busy and they do their best to attract potential customers.

    busy indoor market
This large indoor market is in a side street not far from the port area and very busy when we visited on a weekday afternoon. There appears to be two sections - one was closed and I think that’s the fish market area and is perhaps only open mornings? The fruit and veg area was full of stalls selling a wide variety of produce. Cafes are dotted around the exterior. A good place to visit if looking for fresh local produce.

Great place for fresh fruit and cheap snacks
A visit to the indoor market is a must. Rows of meat, fish, fruit, nuts and vegetable stalls. The Art Deco/ Modernista window at one end is amazing and lightens up the interior. Good place to buy snacks. Modernista buildings in the nearby narrow streets. Also terminus for bus to Botanic gardens

    Colourful fresh food
Brilliant bustling atmosphere early morning, fresh colourful prawns, interesting fish, variety of spanish cheeses, olives and oil, fruit and vegetables piled high. Tapas eateries around the perimeter very busy during lunchtime. All quiet by afternoon.

    Sabor!!!!!!
Amazing building, inviting stalls full of colorful vegetables, fruit, dried fruit, sweets, fish and meat, just to mention a few. I had lunch standing at a stall, enjoying so tasteful octopus skewers with green sauce! Another amazing food experience was to taste local almonds and figs, definitely special. A place where you can pass and pass again, always finding something worth trying

Amongst the market stalls selling fresh fruit, meat and fish etc., there is a bar type place hidden away at the back where you can order different sea food dishes and they are SO GOOD. I came back here twice and was only in Malaga for three days! You can also sit out the front of the market in more of a restaurant type place and I believe it is the same menu... I think it was called “Happy Fish”. Would definitely recommend!

I have repeatedly sent this by email to address listed on Mercado Atarazanos Website, Ref
Info@mercadomalaga.es
However, email keeps being returned. It is impossible to register complaint accordingly. Hope Trip Adviser can assist?
See below

Dear Sir
I would like to register an official complaint of my dining experience on 01/12/23 while visiting
Mercado Atarazanos Malaga.

Having previously 2 days before had grilled shrimps my wife and I both pensioners paid €24.

When seated in good faith we then ordered Jumbo shrimps for both of us.
On 2 separate occasions we questioned Waiter whether the Jumbo shrimps were infact small lobsters. We were clearly told by Waiter they were not.

A while later the Waiter appeared with a platter of what looked to be shrimps. These were not of exceptional quality.

On requesting bill we were presented with a receipt for €152.00, with the shrimps listed as €140.00. When we objected to this grossly exorbitant cost we were told they were special shrimps.

On the board adjacent to table no price was advertised. It merely stated grilled Jumbo shrimps. When we raised matter with Waiter no apology or refund was offered. I attach copy of receipt

This incident ruined what was a very pleasant holiday in Malaga. Both I and my wife are pensioners and cannot afford this huge and grossly exorbitant cost.

I have placed my complaint on Trip Adviser, where I note other Tourists of different nationalities have had same experience. I also intend raising this matter with the Malaga Chamber of Commerce.

For Tourists and pensioners to be "ripped-off", in such scams is deplorable and reflects badly on Malaga as a tourist destination.

I await hearing from you with explanation to this episode.

Yours Faithfully,
Dermot. G. Henry

Avoid the outside restaurants if you value your Euro’s. We were one of four tables who were scammed on Friday afternoon.
The display board didn’t have a price for the jumbo prawns (which I now believe Spanish regulations state that there should be a price displayed ) so I specifically asked and then clarified the price. I was told €14:50 per person so we ordered for 2 persons. When the bill arrived much to our surprise it was €97 euros. We were not alone as four other tables were having similar issues. I asked to speak to the manager “Maria” who was extremely unhelpful and suddenly couldn’t speak English when I asked who I speak to at Market management. We did manage to “negotiate” a reduction but others weren’t so fortunate. Checking other reviews it appears that this is a very regular occurrence. I will formally write to the Market to complain and I advise others to raise awareness of this disgraceful behaviour.

Nice market. Prices can vary quite a lot from stand to stand, so have a look around before buying. Difficult not to taste and buy...should have been visited on a full stomach 😜!! Delicious food. But as for the “eateries” around, not so impressed: very overpiced in comperiamo to the rest of Malaga and not so special in food preparation.

Before the area was cleared in 1868 to make way for the current market building it was variously used as a shipyard, convent, military fort, hospital and medical school. Visited on a Saturday afternoon as stalls were closing but it was still busy with locals crowded around the bars/cafes, spilling onto the pavement and generally enjoying themselves. This is where locals shop to get the best of fresh meat, fish, vegetables and associated regional produce. A magnificent stained glass window takes up one end of the building. It’s close to the main city area and definitely worth a detour to treat your senses but don’t forget to check out the window!

Having seen rave reviews about the market we made sure to visit during our trip to Malaga.

It is quite a spectacle and food for the eyes and stomach!

BUT, beware the sales practices of the hot food vendors. Order only what you can see on the menu at the price it says, and pay special attention as some items such as gambas are sold on a unit price only. So 4 gambas could cost 4X the stated price.

Our waiter offered a taste of everything when he saw we were hesitating. Taken off guard we said ok. It was nice, but the bill shock was 140 euros! All that for what he said was just a little sample of everything. )-;

3 days later after eating more modestly we went back to try something small(forearmed). Another group in front of us clearly got the same treatment as we had, which led to a heated discussion with no fewer than 3 waiters.

You have been warned! Ask the price before you make the order!

The market itself is worth a 5 star rating, but the tricky customer service means I only give 3 out of 5 today.

My wife and I visited and looked forward to a bit of lunch here. The place is extremely busy which is a bit of their problem because they can’t serve people in a decent time. We waited for ages for our order to be taken by a waiter that appeared to be not bothered about customer service. Firstly I asked for a small beer and a big one arrived. I got this changed. My wife had asked for a pork skewer tapas but a plate of pork skewer and chips arrived which was 3 times the price. The pork was raw on the skewer and when we mentioned it to our waiter he suddenly couldn’t speak English.
This place is too busy ,overrated, and not worth it.

Lovely atmosphere for lunch in the sun here but beware. When choosing our tapas, the Happy Fish waiter told us they had run out of gambas pil pil but had some other gambas on the specials. When our bill came instead of the €6 for this it was more like €60. Yes, we should have asked how much but we imagined it was just a straight swap of something similar. The Happy Fish waiter then became rude and agressive when we challenged the bill. The experience rather spoiled our lunch and we felt it was probably a regular scam. Order nothing without asking the price if it’s not listed on the menu

A very interesting covered market in an historic place with colourful regional products from fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, spices, etc...
Prices are very reasonable. It is located in the lower part of the old town, near the canal.

Busy. Great to walk about and check out all the stalls. Afterwards take a seat outside for lunch. Only advice we can give is please check the menu carefully and make sure you know what your are ordering. The waiters are quick to recommend items "off the menu" (eg specials) which are significantly more expensive. Our lunch turned out to be the most expensive meal we had on our holiday.
