About
The Chapel of the Catholic Kings was conceived as a burial site intimately linked to the Cathedral, but without merging with its architecture. It is built with a single nave, an octagonal presbytery preceded by bleachers, a transept with little development and a choir at its feet, for the functions of a pantheon. As a funeral chapel none, in Spain, it excels in size. In it you can appreciate both its simplicity and its wealth thanks to the generous endowment of the queen. The Royal Chapel houses the mortal remains of Don Fernando de Aragón and Dona Isabel de Castilla (who were initially resting in the convent of San Francisco de la Alhambra), as well as those of Dona Juana I, Don Felipe and Infante Miguel. Under the tombs there is a small crypt of marked austerity, in which are deposited the real, lead coffins, identified by the initial of each name on the cover.

    Child friendly!
If you love medieval history and fairytale icons, that is your place! Its intricate design and detailed craftsmanship are a sight to behold. The blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles creates an atmosphere that transports you back in time, making you feel part of Spain's illustrious past. The children's audioguide made my 8 years-old boy was both educational and entertaining, capturing my son's attention throughout our visit!

    Royal tombs
I think, as Americans, we are fascinated when we see things that we learned about in school about the formation of our country, and we all learned about King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The Royal Chapel has a separate entrance from the Cathedral, so you can choose to visit either or both, but we only went to the Chapel. There is an audio guide, and the highlight is the tombs of the King and Queen, which are accessed by stairs in the main area. You can't take photos in the Chapel.

    No photos allowed
This took a while to find and we had to ask at the cathedral in the end (left and left again as you go out of the cathedral entrance!) . The chapel contains the burial crypt of Ferdinand and Isabella plus Philip II and Joanna the Mad. No photos were allowed which was a real shame as there was some genuinely decent post Islamic marble carvings on the tombs. All info was audio guide only, as seems usual in Granada (and I completely understand why but it is still frustrating). The chapel was worth a 10 minute visit.

    So interesting
I was born in Southern California, so visiting the tomb of Ferdinand and Isabelle for the second time was something of a pilgrimage for me. On a previous visit I was a bit shocked by the casual way the Capilla Real was being managed, including seeing a woman striding eating an ice cream. This visit, it was more carefully maintained. This is after all the resting place of the monarchs who created modern Spain, sent Columbus and it is a consecrated church. It has atmosphere. It has gravitas and dignity. The two sets of tombs are very beautiful. Without Isabelle, there would be no San Diego, no Los Angeles, no San Francisco, no San Bernardino. I was glad to pay my respects to her again.

This is the first major Cathedral that I have been in while a mass was in progress. Preparations were also underway for the Jan 2 parade so the Square was full of trumpeters and officials in costume. The church is worth a visit, the parade not so much.

Fascinating and extremely ornate (as you'd expect), and certainly worth the entrance fee for us. Aim to spend at least an hour here. We tried visiting on a few occasions and found there to be long queues - if you can, aim to get there around 3pm when most of the locals will be eating (far fewer visitors).

Place worth entering.

Accessible and interesting audio guide, although I would recommend stopping some of the audios to be able to pay attention to everything. The information and what there is is explained very well. In addition to having signage to complete it.

Very well preserved and interesting artistically and historically.

There is no box office problem. First thing in the morning the queue was huge, but around 12 we only spent 10 minutes waiting to enter.

The "Capilla Real de Granada" was built between 1505 and 1517, in the Isabelline gothic style, accomplishing the legendary Catholic Kings' wish that their remains should be buried in their beloved Granada. After the fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Al-Andalus in 1492, Granada became an important part of the Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon's Kingdoms. The "Capilla Real de Granada" was dedicated to "St. John the Baptist" and "St. John the Evangelist" and was originally integrated to the neighboring "Catedral de Granada". Visit the five Royal Tombs - Queen Isabella of Castille and King Ferdinand of Aragon (by Italian sculptor Domenico Fancelli), Queen Joana of Castille "the Mad" and her husband King Phillip I "the Handsome" (by Spanish sculptor Bartolomé Ordoñez) and of young Prince Michael of Portugal (grandson of the Catholic Kings, in the Crypt). And don't miss the Sacristy Museum, with fine paintings (one even by Sandro Botticelli, "Agony in the Garden") and the original gold Crown and Scepter of the Catholic Monarchs. Certainly unmissable to all those interested in the Ibero-America's history! Enjoy!

The site is worth it, for its artistic and historical significance. However, it is a shame that the €5 entry fee does not allow you to photograph anything inside.
Furthermore, a little more information than an audio guide on visitors' mobile phones would be appreciated, specifically regarding the paintings exhibited in the chapel and sacristy.

King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella decided they would be buried in Granada. The result is the immaculate Royal Chapel, built from 1505 to 1517. Isabella died in 1504, a year before it was started. Ferdinand died in 1516, a year before it was finished. The Lonja has a beautiful wooden ceiling. There is an equally beautiful brass gate before the crypt area, the retablo mayor completing the elegance of the place. Vestments and religious art complete the tour before ending in a small gift shop. Entry was 5 euros, a separate admission from the cathedral. No photos could be taken inside. QR codes got you ample information of the solemn but stunning site.

It is very beautiful and above all it is a historical visit; The Catholic Monarchs are buried here and the visit focuses on their history, how they arrived here and their tombs, which are beautiful. It is the most important point of the city.
Its entrance costs €6 (it seems a little expensive for such a small space) and they tell you a QR where you can download an audio guide on your mobile phone, which is very good. You cannot take photos in any of its spaces.

While I always believe in paying entrance free for the upkeep of historical monuments, but the no photo policies is not very fair.

We r forced to purchase photos towards the end of the tour and that is a clear sign of abusing tourists as well as not so environmental friendly. Who keeps hard copied of photographs these days?

As we come on Trafalgar tour package ,we have already paid an arm and a leg to our tour company. Then we have to pay additional for optional tour to visit the Royal Chapel. Then our tour co hires a local guide whom we have to tip at the end of the explanation, last thing we deserve is to have to pay again for photographs in hard copies.

I do hope that whoever makes that decision to NO photos will consider not killing more trees and create carbon footprint.

Not sure if this is true but our guide says that the chapel mentioned those who take photos will be cursed with 2 extra years in hell!!! Hmmmmm not very nice is it?

I hope this is not true. All in all it's a nice chapel n worth the entrance fee

Oh one more thing. Unlike many cathedrals and churches, this one do not provide toilet facilities : ( so not very visitor friendly. Someone had build a toilet across the chapel and charge Euro 1 per person.

The history of this chapel and the chapel itself was quite interesting and impressive. All the intricate detail, etc., was beautiful and enjoyable to see. The only drawback on this visit was no photography was allowed within the chapel. This was a bit disappointing, as there are a number of things I’d love to have been able to share with family upon return home.

Costs 6 euros to enter and includes an audioguide if you have your own headphones! The building is quite lovely but I found the artworks and ornamentation a bit gaudy. It's quite a small place and they request silence/ quiet. The tapestries from 1521 were impressive. Not sure it's worth the entry fee.
