Very cool tower on the waterfront!
The Torre del Oro is a dodecagonal military watchtower in downtown area of Seville. It was erected by the Almohad Caliphate in order to control access to Seville via the Guadalquivir river. It was constructed in the first third of the 13th century. The tower served as a prison during the Middle Ages. The Torre del Oro (or Tower of Gold) is one of the most emblematic monuments in Seville.

    Worth a visit!
We paid a quick visit to this tower after a beautiful boat trip down the river. It houses a museum which tells the maritime history of Seville. Very interesting. Was quiet when we were there. Beautiful views across the city from the tower.

Don't be charged when free on Mondays!
In the area & had read that this tower had free entry on Mondays. When got there the woman said €6 and I said it should be free and pointed out a sign to this effect so she, rather begrudgingly, said ok and let us in. Think other people may have been charged if they didn't know it was free entry (on Monday). There is a small exhibit of naval objects & paintings halfway up the tower. Worth climbing to top to see across the river & city.

    Interesting navigation tower
This is a very nice navigation tower to visit. There is a sizeabIe display that is interesting and Informative. There is a nice view from the top floor. It's easy to reach from the Archivos de Indias; near the metro station Puerta Jerez located along the river. Be prepared to climb several flights of narrow stairs.

Looked forward to seeing it again
Having visited it some decades ago it was great to see it again, majestic at the River. It really is a treasure of a landmark. In the gorgeous evening sunshine it looked wonderful. Ascending to the rooftop gave thrilling vistas all around, streetscapes and river.

    Compact infomative Naval museum
Fantastic tower detailing the naval history of Spain since 1220 when it was first built with further additions to the tower added in 1248 & 1944. This was the only authorised port of access for the Indies trade route in 1503 & also in 1522 saw the first sailing circumnavigation. Small & compact with lovely displays, informative free audioguide & a fantastic viewpoint of the city & river. Entry is based on donations.

    An emblematic symbol of Seville
We first saw this famous tower while walking along the banks of the Guadalquivir river. The 13th century tower, originally a military watchtower, is an impressive sight. Over the years, it has served many functions, including as a prison, a gunpowder storage, now a lookout and a maritime museum. It is well worth a visit.

    Moorish tower by the Guadalquivir
Certainly one of Seville's landmarks, however not that much going on there. It's located right by the Guadalquivir river and used to be one of the Moorish medieval city wall towers. Allegedly they kept gun powder there, while Spaniards later kept gold from their overseas colonies. During our visit in mid July it was closed (probably due to scorching heat) and we couldn't climb it, so it was just a pass by 5 min photo op.

I would not say this is a must see or a highlight but considering we got off the bus just outside and it was free on Mondays to visit, and the queue was not that big we went in for a look. I think its €3 usually. Cannot get a really great view of the city, it is not very tall and also the columns obstruct the view. We thought we could get to the very top only to be disappointed to find that when you get to the outside there are some stairs but its for a lookout point rather than going further in to the top. There is some history/museum in side so great for maritime fans but we did not bother. Okay place if you have 20-30 minutes spare. There’s no toilet inside if anyone is wondering too.

This 12 sided dodecagonal tower was built during the Moorish rule to protect entry to the city via the river. This was done by lifting a chain which stretched to a tower, now destroyed, on the opposite river bank. The tower is worth a visit and entry is very cheap. There is a naval museum inside and it is possible to climb to the roof, via some very narrow stairs. Previous reviewers have complained about a high plastic fence at the top impeding photographs, This plastic fence appears to have been removed, as it was not there when I visited.

The Golden Tower was originally part of the Moorish city walls and joined up with the Alcazar and a similar tower on the other side of the river to stop ships sailing upstream. It's 12 sided and is now a maritime museum - entry is free but a donation is requested. Unfortunately it wasn't open as we were there early in the morning but I'm sure you would get a fantastic view from the top.

The Torre del Oro (Tower of the Gold) dates from the 13th century. When the Almohads chose Seville as their capital, they erected two buildings: the Torre del Oro and the Giralda.
The first used to be part of the Moorish ramparts between the Reales Alcázares and the rest of the city. It was rebuilt in 1760, when a small tower was added.
The name Golden Tower dates from the heyday of Andalusia, when the ships from the American colonies flooded into Seville and were unloaded here. He also served as a prison, chapel, storage place and now as a maritime museum (Museo Naval de Sevilla).

The Gold Tower of Seville is one of the most iconic and characteristic elements of the city. Due to its location next to the Guadalquivir River, and to its unique shape, the tower has great interest and is a must to see if in Seville. My wife and I visited the site as part of a larger guided tour and found the experience interesting.

I was very disappointed not being able to manage the thirty-five floors to to the top of the Cathedral Bell tower. Imagine my delight when I discovered there was another tower in Seville which I might manage to ascend.

This tower entry is by donation only. You pay as little or as much as you can manage. It also houses the Spanish Naval museum which I didn't expect to be so interesting. For example, I didn't know Columbus discovered the Bahamas first before North America, and named it San Salvador.

He also asked the Portuguese King for sponsorship to undertake his journey first and only when he was turned down did he approach the Spanish Queen. (Portugal must have been kicking themselves afterwards.) The ship was gone for three years rather than the ten months expected and during that time it circumnavigated the globe, proving once and for all, and confirming Columbus's theory that the world was in fact round.

There are masses of repro oil paintings about the naval history. I particularly like the one depicting the sailors disembarking from the ship ragged, despondent and frankly looking unwell, rather than jubilant, like the crowd dockside.

Finally, the bell tower has ninety-one steps to the viewing area on the roof, and I managed it without the need for Ventolin. Hurrah. Lovely views from the top too.

Well worth a visit and in walking distance.

We had just left the Acuario and walked along the river towards the center of town. You can see the Torre del Oro from a long way off. The walk along the river was very nice but the closer we got to the Torre the more crowded and chaotic it became. A unique building that was once part of the city defenses. Apparently there is a museum inside but we did not visit.

Great attraction to visit when you are in Seville. They suggest an entrance fee of 3 euros each, but you pay what you want. It was great, quite fascinating, and the displays all have English translations. The maps depicting how the first explorers saw the world were really interesting. They view is fantastic.

Originally part of the city's defensive walls, the monument stands on the left bank of the Guadalquivir River. Golden tiles once covered the tower explaining it's name Tower of Gold. It houses the Naval Museum which contains a collection of exhibits related to Spain's maritime heritage including old ship models and historic navigation charts. There is a terrace which provides great views of the river and city. Worth a visit.

Sorry, no Gold!
An interesting and inexpensive visit and of course lots of stairs.
The naval exhibits were nicely displayed and quite interesting. Strangely we were unable to get to the very top of the tower but the viewing platform did give a reasonable view of the city.
Oddly the tower is not on the river as one may expect but on the city canal, linked to the river by a lock.
