About
Beyond the Iberian peninsula most people are rather uncomfortable about bullfighting, which makes a visit to this venerable bullring with attached museums all the more fascinating – not least for those who would never consider attending a bullfight. An inspection of the ring, and the backstage facilities that sustain it (the Plaza, of necessity, has its own ER) is a good counterpoint to a browse around a museum which is full of artwork and costumes celebrating the skill of the matador together with the mounted heads of their animal nemeses. Go with an open mind and you’ll leave with a much better understanding of bullfighting’s place in the life and culture of Andalucía.

    Interesting. Good Value.
If you've never been to a bullring before, this is really interesting. It was 10 euros each and you just wander around the exhibits and outside to the bullring. Nobody offered any tour or audio, so I don't know what happened to that. An American couple were having a private tour and we got chatting to them, it was interesting. A few pictures, costumes and exhibits. Then you go outside and see the actual arena which is really impressive. We did get tickets and go to a bull fight that evening. Amazing experience. Do it if you get the opportunity.

    Interesting glimpse into bull fighting!
Pretty cool experience. We walked through the arena and museum with the (included) audio guide and it was very informative. Regardless how you feel about bull fighting, it's a rich history and a big part of Seville's heritage. Worth a visit if you have 60-90 mins and 10 euros to spare.

    Bull fighting at its finest
Fortunately there’s a Festival Taurino during my visit in Sevilla so I was able to see live bull fighting here and it was definitely an amazing experience. So nice to see lots of locals dressed up for the occasion. The place was so packed! Learned a lot of history and culture during the event. So glad that they were able to preserve this historic place and its tradition although it can be viewed as harmful to horses. Overall, it was a memorable night.

Once a lifetime visit to the most iconic & one of the most controversial venues in the world.
If you really want to see the real spanish aristocracy, come visit this controversial venue during one of the 5 bull fights that take place in this annual feature. Absolutely unreal atmosphere which might sicken you (due to the bloodshed) but this is the tradition which should be respected. Tip: sit in the sombre section, if you don’t want to be roasted alive. These are usually booked by the enthusiasts so book in advance (one month)

    Understanding
I certainly don't support bullfighting nor would I as a tourist go to a bullfight. However, as with many other things, to me, it's worth understanding the history and the culture of this 'sport'. Therefore I was interested to walk around, to see the 'magnificent' arena and the artefacts on display that stretch back over hundreds of years. Did that change my mind? - no, but I now have a better understanding of why it persists as a social occasion. Do I agree with it? No definitely not - but I think the visit was worthwhile. It opens your mind and your nostrils. You come away thinking....

Fascinating insight to this art form
The Real Maestranza offers a fascinating insight into Tauromachy for €10 entry with an easy to follow informative audioguide. 1749 construction began to replace an older rectanglar bullring taking a full 120 year to fully complete. Seating 12,000 people Bullfighting dates back as a training tool  for the army in order to always be ready to fight for crown. The collection includes beautiful delicate silk/gold traje de luces, the first bull ever pardoned for such elegant performance. The Royal Box presides the entire performance & was constructed in the 18th Century: exit via the Prince gate below was only reserved for the best performers & it's inuagal opening was only in 1952! Really great visit to this remarkable Bullring

Spain's most important Plaza de Toros
During 30+ years of my travels I've visited Spain around 20 times - the entire country, from small towns and villages to big cities. Every single of them has a bullfight arena - Plaza de Toros. In my younger travels, when I was in my 20's I've attended several bullfight shows - in Madrid, Malaga,...as well here in Seville. Then I thought it was a cool thing, but over the years I changed my mind and didn't attend it for the last 20 years, nor I will ever. However, it's a part, a very important part of Spanish culture and tradition, and you'll hear endless debates and reasons in favor and against it. Maestranza is considered one of Spain's most important bullfight venues. Being here with my daughter, we went to its museum to show her an intro and history of this controversial show. Museum is very good, well organized and explained with a reasonable 10 Euros entry fee including the audio guide. It will be her, and everyone's else personal decision if to go on such a performance. Therefore my rating is 3 stars, meaning neutral, not average.

    The Seville bullring- fantastic venue.
A great venue, interesting and friendly staff. First, pay just 10 euros entrance then the exhibition and history of the place is explained. Then into the arena - fantastic. I was there over 90 minutes as it is worth savouring the atmosphere. But you could do the venue in about an hour. Wonderful photo opportunities in the arena. 5 out of 5.

On a gorgeous September afternoon, my wife and I decided to work off our lunch and take a walk from Plaza Nueva to Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza. Even though bullfighting is nearly extinct in Spain, it was fascinating to learn about the history and details of this sport at this iconic complex. The complex is huge and includes a museum and a 12,000 seat bullring. Tours are conducted during the day in different languages; audio units provide additional languages which detail the significance of different areas of the complex. The cost per adult when I visited was 8€.

This is one of the few bullrings that still has bullfights scheduled during specific times of the year.

During my visit, I enjoyed seeing the exhibits I expected to see in the museum—matador uniforms, the lances used by the picadors and even a large bull preserved by taxidermy. However, there were other exhibits I was surprised by and found fascinating. These included the areas where the matadors/picadors prepared to meet the bulls as well as the chapel! Once I thought about it, visiting a chapel before facing a bull is quite appropriate.

After exploring the museum and the various rooms and stalls around the complex, it was time to enter the bullring. This area appears more massive then the typical stadium since only dirt is contained on the ground. I can only imagine that the ring seems smaller to the matadors when facing down a bull!

Definitely worth a visit to the oldest bullring in the whole of Spain. Plenty yo see and read about within the museum.
Reasonably priced to enter, and an amazing experience to be able to walk out into the bullring itself, you can almost feel what it must have been like when in action.
Would have been even better if we could have been allowed to walk up the seating area to enable a more higher up opportunity for photos.

The free audio tour turns this visit from 4 stars to 5. Don’t mess around get it, all you need is your phone. You initially walk through a shady concourse filled with all things bull fighty. The audio tour educates you on the history, tradition and inner workings of the show. There’s a few cool costumes, weapons, art and statues. There are a few gems in the collection. I liked the crazy Picassoish head on one matador in a group portrait. My son thought the ring itself was the best piece of art and that’s where you go next.

Its hard not to feel like Russell Crow in The Gladiator as you walk into the ring. It’s awe inspiring and simple. Check out the scars on the fence made by the bulls horns as he tries to maim the players. Make finger horns on your head and chase grandma around. Scream “Are you not entertained” into the stands. Speaking of entertained my 11 and 14 year old spawn recommend it to like age humans. Walk up into the stands and sit in the shade by the royals private box.
You can wrap your tour up in 1 hour if your party is comprised of practical folk. If you’re accompanied by a spend thrift or two and get stuck at the gift shop you’re looking at 1.5 hours.

It’s well worth a visit.

We wanted to see this venue more from a curiosity and comparison standpoint. We were in the colosseum in Rome and wanted to compare a modern day arena to an ancient one. This venue is very clean, well organized, and in excellent shape from a maintenance standpoint. The staff is very kind and helpful. Opening hour on a week day with pre-purchased online tickets is your best bet for a comfortable visit with minimal or no crowds. One can download the audio guide at the entrance for a bit of history on the place.

This is a guided tour, about 40 min. 100% stroller accessible, no stairs etc so really pleased.

There is several stops, a little museum, as well as the arena.. you are free to walk around during these stops and explore.

Beautiful architecture.

The only downside is that you exit by a different gate than enter so if you want to use toilets, do it before the tour begins. We have totally forgotten to buy a T-shirt for our baby because of it.

I am not a fan of bullfighting and would never see a real event, but I do appreciate that it is part of Spain's culture. The cost was 10 euro PP with no time limit to look at the museums, the stands and the arena. The building was created in the 1800's and is a magnificent structure, so know what ever your views are on the sport, you cant fail to be impressed with the structure. A good detour from the usual attractions and time well spent if you have an hour to spare.

The white washed walls and ornate architecture of the Plaza de Toros along with the sand of the arena made me think that this is probably the closest link we may have to what the Colosseum may have looked like in Ancient Roman times. There is an informative museum with traced Bull Fighting back to it's medieval roots. Whether this practice is still relevant is up to you to decide.

Regardless being pro/against the bullfight, this arena is really worth to be seen. At the entrance you can download an app for the guide, then there is a kind of museum and finally you can enter the arena itself. The arena is big and well built. You and also enter one of the sitting areas

I was out for a stroll around Sevilla with my wife in the late afternoon and we almost literally stumbled across a live bullfight. We bought tickets off the local tout and went in. Now I don’t generally have an opinion on something like this but I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it but should experience it. This way I could have an opinion based on my own experience.
We sat down in a mostly empty stadium. Which incidentally was beautiful. And watched the conclusion of the first fight. We saw almost nine of it before the bull collapsed and died.
A few minutes later the second bull entered the arena. It ran around very rapidly for a minute or so but soon tired. The various different stages of the bullfight were ‘introduced’ by way of a change in the music. The most skilful, and brave individuals, for me were the picadors. They stand and face the bull with nothing but their short lances. This is not a defensive weapon and they have to rely on their own athleticism to stay healthy. They seem to be able to do,this by running inside the turning arc of the bull and planting the lances in the bulls back. These lances slow the bull down and enable the matadors to carry out their job of entertaining the crowd and eventually killing the bull.
So, we stayed for a full four of the remaining five fights. I have to say I was entertained by some of the immaculate cape work displayed, and the skill of the picadors, but didn’t enjoy the final stage of killing the bull.
I had a good experience but would not go again.

Quite happy to look at a bullring, but wouldn’t necessarily want to see a bull fight. You can download the tour and listen to it on your phone whilst following the route through the stadium. It tells the history and shares some stories of famous fighters and bulls. The bullring certainly wasn’t boring.
