… and 3 km back again.

You’ll end up in beautiful surroundings with great views over Oviedo city. 100 metres away is another historical site, Iglesia de Santa María del Naranco. Both buildings are pretty seen from the outside, but the top attraction is the walk up here and the views.

The following is a quote from Wikipedia:

“San Miguel de Lillo is a Roman Catholic church built on the Naranco mount, near the Church of Santa María del Naranco in Asturias. It was completed in 842 and it was consecrated by Ramiro I of Asturias and his wife Paterna in the year 848. It was originally dedicated to St. Mary until this worship passed to the nearby palace in the 12th century, leaving this church dedicated to Saint Michael.”

While visiting the near by Santa Maria, take a look a this, very nice. Sadly, much has fallen down over the years and a bit is left standing but still worth it.

A gem of a building (well all that remains) Quiet and peaceful. Guided tours linked to those at nearby Naranco.

Beautiful church on Mount Naranco near the Church of Santa Maria del Naranco. Highly recommend if in Oviedo! If you sign up for the tour of the Church of Santa Maria, it includes a tour of San Miguel de Lillo. Small chapel inside, but historic.

The Church of St. Michael is very close to Santa Maria. It gives the impression of a small rural Church, but it is a third of the old one. The rest was destroyed in the middle ages by soil erosion. Only the vestibule and the initial part of its three naves have been preserved. The frescoes of the IX century preserved inside are also not in very good condition. This is one of the earliest frescoes in Spain containing images of a person. Unfortunately, I got to the mountain early and couldn't get inside either Church. However, if at least the work schedule hung on Santa Maria, I didn`t see even this here.

Very nice little church on the top of a hill worth a visit. We drove up and parked on the side of the road - others walked up the hill (which is what you are supposed to do).

We could only view it from the outside because is currently being restored. The guide actually starts at Santa Maria del Naranco, which can be viewed from the inside. The guide was very kind, spoke only in Spanish but slowly and we were able to follow quite well. The setting is simply beautiful.

Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo are two pre-romanic churches located in Naranco, a hill within a 30 min walk or 10 min car drive from Oviedo city center, and they're worth a visit. Plus, you'll have an extraordinary view.

Preromanesque San Miguel de Lillo dates back to 9th century and the reign of King Ramiro I. It was build in honour of the Archangel Michael. Today, only a a part of the original building survived: the entrance, access to the choir stalls and the start of the three naves. Nice ornamentation. A World heritage site.

As it's accesible on the same ticket as Santa Maria de Naranco, the visit is guided and in Spanish and admission is free on Mondays.

A Roman Catholic church that was built on Mount Naranco and is situated near the Church of Santa María del Naranco. It was consecrated in 842 and only 1/3 of the original structure still stands. It is pretty incredible to see it up close and imagine what life was like back then. A must see when you are in Oviedo - a UNESCO World Heritage site.
