An ex warehouse with a fab redesign. All the pillars holding the building up inside are art works in their own right. Really clever idea. There is a terrace on the roof with some nice views but alas nothing up there - a shame. Would be a great place for a restaurant.

This is a good example of the refurbishment of the merchant’s wine exchange building. The columns on the ground floor are creatively decorated to add color to the expanse as you enter. The roof was rather barren with a few people sunbathing. The roof would make a good place for a restaurant. Overall, a good example of a contemporary design in an older architecturally significant building.

Starck left his mark here and transformed cleverly an old building by giving it a modern touch without ruining it. Absolutely worth seeing. The shop selling basque design is also very good. Will visit again if I come back.

Fascinating to see the different pillars holding up the structure. When we were there it was very quiet. The exhibitions that were there were We are Code - downstairs and on the main floor which was interactive and really interesting. Outside there were 3 paintings on the facade if the building.
The cinema is on the lower floor and more activities upstairs.
The cafe was good for lunch.

This looks like an old building from the outside, and not worth looking at. I would not have visited it if it was not for a local friend taking me.
The ground floor is a huge open space, with beautiful columns, each one individually designed. You can see the bottom of a stretch of the swimming pool over head, as well as there being bars inside. There is also a giant TV screen which has a video of the sun.
Within the building there is also a library which stretches over several floors which is worth a look at; a restaurant; the leisure centre; a cinema; and parking.
A real hidden gem which has to be seen to be appreciated.

This was an impressive building from the outside but given the number of older historic buildings around town - initially did not see why it on the top must see locations in Bilbao. Until you enter and see the interior is really what this all about. There are 43 pillars all different shapes and sizes holding the structure up.. Old outside and trendy modern inside..
Definitely worth a walk through

A visit here will likely make you wonder "what can't my hometown have this spectacular centre?" I didn't swim in the pool, but looked up at it on the roof from the main level, but I did browse and admire the "suspended" library sitting atop the Phillipe Starck pillars.
At very least, it's a cool way to walk a city block inside the centre, before walking down the next street full of unique architecture.

The Azkuna was formally an old wine warehouse built in the early 1900's that fell into disuse and was totally renovated and rebuilt, whilst keeping the original facade. It was opened in around 2010.
We stumbled across it one day whilst out walking and, wondering what all the people were doing, followed some inside.
The ground floor was amazing. Quite a large dark space, that was only partially covered by the floors above (which had windows looking down onto it) and a staggering number of multicoloured columns.
We went upstairs to the library and observed a conference centre and what looked like examination rooms with students in them. There was also a gym, theatres, an art centre and cafes and restaurants.
It was only later that we read that there was an indoor pool upstairs as well as a terrace where you could sun bake.
The architects and builders have done an excellent job in retaining the facade of the old building whilst providing a beautiful modern multi-purpose facility.

About 15 minutes walk from our hotel on the river, this is a stunning and living space. This is a converted wine exchange which maintains much of the old exterior. But has transformed the inside. Watch out, in particular, for the roof top glass bottomed swimming pool which you view from below and makes great photos.

Buen viaje.
