    Various tapas
A large market with fruits, vegetables, meat and fish. The place is very nice with stained glass windows. On the other side there are large tables. You can seat there and boy some things to eat and to drink. It’s very pleasant with local people. You can eat a lot of tapas and some sweet too. I recommend this place.

Welcome sit down after long day out seeing the sites.
Recommended by the reception in our hotel in the old town. Literally a few mins walk. Ideal place is the food hall. Never visited the actual market as it was closed. Basically it's a range of pinchox bars with one central eating area. Very busy at different times. Very good value. Most pinchox are 2.50 euros. Drinks are reasonable too. So if you have done too much walking this is the place. ONE table. Six or seven different bars. There is an outside terrace too.

    Pintxos!
Great place on the first floor to have some delicious and very elaborated pintxos, at around 2.5-3.5 euro each,. With the drink of your choice (vermut, soft drinks, etc.) you can have a quick lunch here. There are at least 4 different bars that provide their pintxos. Outdooor seating is possible, close to the water.

Good to get a feeling of local food habits
Not the most exciting food market you will see in Spain. But definitely a market that performs an important function for the local community. Nice selection of fish and meat, vegetables less so, and decent numbers of cheese and dried meat stalls. Some interesting novelty items and cuts of meat not seen often. Nice restaurant/ food hall

    Worth a visit
I love visiting markets whenever i go to a different city, it’s a great place to see how locals live and shop and it’s great to see in some cities locals still go to there markets. This market was great! The food hall is incredible, plenty of choices.

There are so many wonderful places to walk to in Bilbao on a sunny February, but on our second day in the city we kicked off with an amble along the riverside to the Mercado de la Ribera. Essentially this is what it says on the tin - a market - and what is so fab about it is that it is clearly not one of those rather fake tourist markets full of cheap clothes and tat but a working market selling only fresh foodstuffs and serving the local community. I love the fact that people pitch up there to buy meat, poultry, fish, seafood, veg etc. and don't just drive to an out of town hypermarket to get something shrink-wrapped and without personality. For me it was a bit of an education in things fished from the sea that I had never come across before! That said although I had a leisurely wander around the two floors of eye-popping produce I wasn't really on the hunt for a kilo of percebes or an entire monkfish but there was an attraction for me: the gastrobars. I was like a kid in a candy store. The endless counters of mouth-watering pintxos; the best value cocktails in Bilbao; the charming little terrace overlooking the river, what is not to love!! I just could not resist an Aperol spritz and a pintxo (a mini langostine burger with garlic mayo in a tiny seeded bun) in the sunshine on the terrace. The perfectly mixed and garnished cocktail was 4,50€ whereas I had paid nearly double that in town the night before and later in my stay the same concoction set me back over 12€ in a not-very-welcoming bar. A lovely diversion and as part of a riverside stroll it is quite simply just perfect. Just make sure to leave room for several pintxos as you will be spoiled for choice!

I found this market rather disappointing. It's a modern building with escalators to reach the 2 levels. No market atmosphere and rather bland. I spend 10 to 15 minutes walking around it and quickly went out.

The photo shown here is of the Railway Station - not the market! Please update!
The market is quite small but clean and great food.

We were glad we came, but just as happy when we decided to leave. We had 2 tapas and then decided that the noice level was not something that we wanted to put up with. The music was so loud that we couldn’t talk across the table. The food itself was fine but not excellent.

We thought the lunch food / pintxos was good at the Mercado, but we think you can get better pintxos at the plaza or in the bars of Casco Viejo. A bit too crowded and dirty for my liking.

Variety of fish and meat dishes and most important, under a room for the sunny and rainy days of Bilbao. Worth visiting to take a rest when walking in the old town. The presence of locals ensures the quality of food.

Wow, just loved this place. We had a table outside and took turns to go and chose a drink and a Pinxos. Best choice of vegetarian we came across.
