Well if you do think old buildings should never be revitalised and used for other activities then this is not the place for you. Coming from a country where it is routine to charge 10 euros or more for entry to similar historical sites, the entrance fee is rather small in our opinion. We visited the Castillo with no idea of what was inside but we ended up having a great time. The older parts of the castle have been sensitively blended with modern architecture and the whole houses a number of works by Martin Chirino. To get the most out of this you do need to take time to ponder these works though and also to view the video describing this sculptor's inspiration and history. The links with the industrial past but also nature, and the sheer amount of physical effort required to create these sculptors is awe inspiring. I personally felt I got a lot deal more from seeing a number of works by one artist rather than the more traditional art gallery where one views a variety of artists, styles etc. There is also a great little cafe outside in the park which serves a wide range of drinks and some food.

We have visited lots of contemporary art galleries around the world but this exciting development of an ancient building into a contemporary art space has to be the most beautiful we have ever visited. An ancient castle building has been very cleverly adapted to showcase the work of a local sculptor and the sculptures look absolutely sensational in the ultra modern spaces that have been created.
I cannot recommend Castillo de La Luz highly enough ....it’s a triumph of modern architecture and a wonderful gallery that deserves to be seen by more people.

We knew nothing about the local sculptor Martin Chirino and were delighted to discover his unique work and life story exhibited to such effect in a 15th Century fortress and castle.
The work is an incredible blend of heavy mostly steel pieces shaped with surprising delicacy and charm.
The castle history and origins are also part of the experience and are explained in the audio guide but for us it was the large sculptural pieces that stood out.
The staff were very helpful and suggested the best routes to take as the Castle is large and the exhibits cover about 10 rooms.
It was wonderful to discover such a visionary artist and learn about his work and the local landscape and ship building crafts that inspired him.

An unknown to us Sculptor/metalworker/blacksmith!

What we had expected was a run down castle with a few dusty placards, the usual dross on display at UK castles.

Instead we were treated to a stunning tastefully renovated space in which a locally born artist's world were displayed and all for a ridiculously low admission price.

Really enjoyable couple of hours pent here, even if I found one of the glass floors impossible to walk over.

As the oldest defensive fortress built in the Canary Islands in 1478, the Castillo de la Luz has since been sensitively and thoughtfully resurrected as an art museum housing the entire corpus and creative trajectory of Gran Canaria's most distinguished sculptor, Martin Chirino who has build a career around the motif of the spiral and whose giant copper sculpture Espiral de Viento II dominates the northern end of Calle Mayor de Triana, the old quarter's pedestrianised main commercial thoroughfare. This old castle as reinvented art space can be conceived as the epitome of an ideal collaboration between artist and architect. The architects responsible for the renovations, Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, have created a captivating modernist space perfectly in synchronicity with Chirino's forged iron pieces, harmonising the bare rock remnants of the old castle walls with the minimalist, post industrial look of Chirino's large installations, often deliberately juxtaposing an angular piece with the round space of a turret to engender interesting angles of vision and perspectives. They were aptly conferred the Alvar Aalto medal for architecture and also deservedly nominated for a Mies von der Rohe award for this conservation project. Chirino's publications line one wall, beautifully presented within an extended glass display case while an array of his etchings - suggesting the infinite possibilities of the spiral as motif (one hundred and one ways with the spiral instead
of fifty shades of grey) adorn another wall. Two pieces in the museum bear closer scrutiny for deviating from the distinctive - the Myth of Sisyphus 2 for being rendered in silver with gold plating and inlaid with 19 round tourmalines and Queen of the Wind 2, a framed mixed media etching with an atypical dash of red. Elderly visitors above 65 are entitled to discounted entry tickets of 2 Euros.

I expected a look round a historical building but got to walk around an art exhibition. There was very little information on the old castle but a very modern interior to display work by a local artist Martín Chirino. If you are into this then you will enjoy but if you want to see the inside of an old castle don't bother.

I must confess: sculptor Martin Chirino was no name to me, before coming here. but what a surprise. hosted in what is the oldest building in the town, the exhibition of his sculptures was a real discovery. not only are the pieces themselves stunning, but the whole place is made the best way possible, with a clever reconstruction and perfect lightening. an unexpected highlight of our stay in Las Palmas.

Combines an historic building with a sculpture gallery. Lots of information abou the castle structure, the history of the area, and the sculptures allow for an interesting visit.
Ideally knowing either English or Spanish will enhance your visit, but the venue and sculptures are visual enough to provide an experience without narrative.
Probably best for older children and adults.

My wife and I visited Castillo de La Luz in January 2019.It was out of school term time, and of course in January and we had the whole venue to ourselves as a result . The cost to enter is four euros. The roof area was closed due to renovation work, The history of the castle was blended very well, alongside a sculpture exhibition dedicated to Martin Chirino. As such the castle is encased as an exhibition.
To get to one of the view points / exhibitions you have to cross a floor that consists entirely of reinforced glass. And as you cross the floor , you look down onto the original foundations of the castle approximately thirty feet beneath you. Perfectly safe , but mentally challenging.
Afterwards you can visit an adjacent park which has a cafe that serves smoothies, food and coffees at a very reasonable price. There are public toilets attached to the cafe.
I highly recommend this attraction.

I really have nothing to add to the list two comments.
It's is great restauration of a monument and conversion to a museum dedicated to a very good local sculptor.
