Our tour group visited this plaza in the afternoon and our tour director explained the history of this plaza. It was initially used for bullfighting until the mid-19th century. Salamanca is known as La Dorada, "The Golden City" because of the glow of its sandstone buildings, which the Plaza Mayor represents at its core. The city hall is also located... More

With no doubt, this is the most beautiful square in the world. El Novelty is famous for its ice creams and Don Mauro is a typical meson with local food and top quality where you should have lunch.

Tapas bars around the square for food and drink. A book fair filled the centre, slightly blocking the view - not sure if this is permanent.

I like this Plaza more than one in Madrid because it is really a masterpiece. You will enjoy every second spent there, but you will be specially amazed if you come there during the night.

Be sure to stop by and check the whole plaza mayor. Visit the Cervantes restaurant and check the clock, the meeting point of all Salamanca. Great example of spanish architecture.

It was cold and wet when we visited Salamanca but it was still worth walking around the old city and seeing among other places the Plaza Mayor with its shops and restaurants. we didn't see it at its best as some form of event was due to take place there and workmen were building things in the center.

Just love those guys in history who had the vision to build such fantastic spaces. Every where you look the square looks stunning.Individual shops selling all manner of goods. Cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets.
