The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is a monumental church devoted to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Construction began in 1882, based on plans drawn up by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to continue the project in 1883.

The Temple has always been an expiatory church, built only from donations. As Gaudi said: "The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people." In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the site as a minor basilica.

Go online and get a timed entry, even though there was no line while there, it's easy to see how during peak season or peak time of day there would be a long wait to get in. We only self toured the building - no guide, and no going up to the top. The building has a distinct alien feel... More

Sagrada Familia is a must see in Barcelona. Gaudi's creation is a most awe inspiring building and the continued development is truly amazing. The contrasting styles, the reference to God's creation, the telling of the story of Jesus Christ are truly amazing. Whether you are a person of faith or not you cannot failed Tao be moved by Sagrada Familia

Stunning piece of architecture and natural lighting show. Be sure to visit during the day and ideally on a sunny day. The wall color wash from the stained glazing is amazing.

This is an artistic Masterpiece in the making. From inside the views of the altar and ceiling are breathtaking. Book early to avoid quoes but worth a visit by all those visiting Barcelona.

Huge line for such a small church that is still under construction, the outside is more impressive than the inside, by a nice book instead or watch a video online and take pictures from the outside, there are so many things to do in Barcelona than standing in line for hours.

A must see when in Barcelona but I recommend booking online as the queues can get very big as it's so popular!

We were blown away by the sheer size and complexity of the Cathedral. It is absolutely awe inspiring, and a definite must see if you are visiting Barcelona. My top tips would be to get there early or pre-book - we arrived just after lunch, and all tickets were sold. I had been warned that this happened, but thought we... More

This building is a revolutionary design. Have never seen anything like this - it is huge and unconventional. After having seen many traditional architectural masterpieces in Europe this building has to be seen to be believed. Gaudi the master who designed it must have been a revolutionary during his time especially to gather the funds to execute such a mammoth... More
