Built by the architect Puig and Cadafalch in 1898, it is located in the called Manzana de la Discordia, next to the famous Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí. The façade has been admired since its beginnings, although its true treasure is in the interior, thanks to the original conservation with all its furniture and decoration. Casa Amatller offers daily visits in 4 languages and its opening hours are from 10 am to 6 pm. Also, it offers commented visits, at 11 am 12am and 17 pd. Address
Neighbourhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

Great house, eh on the tour setup
Beautiful, richly ornamented house - for someone who loves the look of old house museums, I definitely preferred it to Casa Batllo next door. I just wish the setup didn't make you feel quite so rushed through it - you get an audioguide to take you through the house, but you have to be part of a guided tour in order to walk through, and the pacing of the audioguide is controlled by the tour guide. Which means unfortunately you don't get to linger and admire, or go through at your own pace. It was a great place to visit, but would have preferred to be able to go through on my own.

Several decorated rooms with guided tour
I came in the evening about 90 min before the closing time, but managed to get a guided tour with a few others. I had the "Barcelona Card Modernista" so did not need a reservation. It was an interesting layout and fun to go through. There is also a small shop to purchase their delicious chocolates! Worth a visit if you have the extra time.

    Love Gaudis unusual architecture
Casa Amatller Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó-Morera make up three interesting buildings showcasing Gaudi's works. Casa Amatler was originally constructed in 1875 for an archaeological enthusiast Antoni Amatller. He passed away in 1910 but his daughter kept this place until 1960 when she passed away. As the original family kept this building for so long the interior remained original. Its role now is that it serves as a historic house, museum, café, and anda an Institute for Hispanic Art. Scheduled tours are available.

    Casa Amatller
This was an unexpected gem that we kind of stumbled upon. It is right next to Casa Batlló, which is very busy. The lines for Casa Batlló are long, the price is a little steep. Casa Amatller is about 20€, it’s an audio-guided tour that lasts about 45 minutes. The house is beautiful, still in tact and in original state. There’s a wonderful cafe attached with great outdoor seating and an optional art exhibit that seemed very popular, we didn’t do that because we had a schedule, and it’s an additional fee.

Beautiful and peaceful space next door to Casa Batllo, great Sorolla exhibit
We went specifically to visit the Sorolla exhibit, which was wonderful. It had a section on the artist's life and work, another section where you can create your own art work and have your "portrait " done, an immersive area surrounded by Sorolla's work, and finally a virtual experience. Well worth the visit. We did not visit the house, that is a separate ticket. But we did go by the peaceful Cafe on the patio, don't need a ticket for that and it is the perfect place to relax and get away from the crowds in Paseo de Gracia. There are also some tables inside in what it used to be the kitchen, and a nice gift shop. Don't miss the beautiful staircase and stained glass in the entrance way. Again, no need to buy a ticket to see that, but the rest of the house must be beautiful as well.

A glimpse into the architectural past
Went on a small group tour that was included with my Barcelona Modernista card entry (get it, it’s great!) and was amazed at how well preserved this place is. It’s a special glimpse into the past that celebrates the building and the people that lived in it. The architecture was so unique and staff were really friendly and helpful.

    Awesome chocolate and experience
We had a fun time and chocolate was awesome. The house tour is worth it, but pay attention to the times there’s usually guided tours every morning in different languages (catalán, Spanish and English). There are some times that they will give you a small gift so look into it.

    Breathtaking
I highly recommend touring Casa Amatller. While I’m a huge Gaudí fan, I was blown away by this gem designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1900. It’s a bit of a hidden treasure, so I got to explore it with just two other people, making the experience even more special. The tour was a fun mix of a staff-led walkthrough and audio guide. Casa Amatller is a dazzling example of Catalan modernism, perfectly preserved with all its original furniture and décor. The only thing missing is the original owners, Amatller and his daughter Teresa, whose stories add so much charm to the visit. Every inch of the house is a work of art, with incredible details that are breathtaking.

The information on the website doesn't fully explain the availabile tours and how they work. The tour times on the website are incorrect.
We had to visit three times before we got to go on a tour. I have included the times for Wednesday and Thursday with my review.
There isn't a self guided tour option available. All the options are guided. Even the audioguide tours include a guide to chaperone the visiting group through each room. So if you don't turn up at the exact time, you will miss the tour group.
On our first visit, we missed the tour because the receptionist was busy talking to someone on the phone.
On our second visit, we were told the tour was sold out. No one turned up for the 'sold out' tour, but the receptionist would not allow us to go on the tour because the tickets were sold. I suspect they didn't want to run the tour with only four people so they pretended not to have any remaining tickets.
On our third attempt, we went on the audioguide tour. It's a strange experience going on an audioguide tour with a guide who doesn't say much. The building is nice, but we were messed around so much on our first two attempts to visit that it was difficult not to view the building with a shade of annoyance.
The audioguide is fairly boring, I wouldn't recommend it as an option. It's probably better to go with a speaking guide. The whole thing could be viewed in 10 minutes if self guided (I'd say its one-quarter of Casa Batillo in size). With the guide , the visit is dragged out to 45 minutes.
There are no lockers for bags, and bags cannot be taken on the tour. So bags are left unsecured at reception. I'd recommended minimising valuables.
The cafe on the ground floor is a good option for lunch. Lots of salads, sandwiches, cakes and pastries.

So happy I toured this beautiful mansion, built by a Modernist architect, Puig i Cadafalch, colleague of Gaudi. Even though the facade is reminiscent of northern Germany, the interior is a happy mixture of Neo-Gothik, Moorish and Art Nouveau styles.
Most activities have been cancelled due to Covid 19, but small guided tours are still offered regularly.
I chose a tour in Catalan as I had missed the Spanish one, figuring I would enjoy visiting this mansion even if I didn't understand the explanations. To my great surprise, the other visitors, finding out I did not speak Catalan, asked our guide to switch to Spanish! Another perfect example of Barcelona's graciousness!
The guide was wonderful and the visit very enriching: the interior is authentic, giving an unaltered view of a turn of the century mansion and of the lifestyle of its owner, the baron of chocolate ;-)
It was fascinating to spot dragons, knights, and other mythical characters, and admire the Art Nouveau furniture. I particularly liked the "Embroidery" room of the daughter of the house, and wondered if she made much use of it...
At the end of the tour, you'll discover a wonderful Café, hidden on the ground floor, serving delicious smoothies, salads and soups. The thick hot chocolate which is included in your visit is just Divine.
All in all, a wonderful treat and underappreciated gem unfortunately outshone by Casa Batlló, its next door neighbour designed by Gaudi.
Don't choose between them - make sure you visit both as they are quite different!

Ushered through the rooms by a guide who is acting as security guard seemingly to ensure they get as many people in and out of there as fast as possible as well as contain the group so no one lingers or goes ahead too fast. It felt like being herded as a sheep. It’s a dark broody house in a gothic style of a family that did not seem like very happy people. Missable

It was relatively good value compared to its next-door neighbour, being about one-fifth the entrance price, albeit the latter being a Gold ticket.

It was a memorable visit, from gazing at the wonderful façade to tasting an Amatller chocolate at the end; said chocolates being the source of the family’s fortune.

Designed by the famous Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch it has exquisite decorative flourishes throughout. Colourful glass, lighting, metal work, carved wood and marble are delightful.

His wealth allowed Amatller to pursue his interests in art and photography; winning awards in the latter endeavour. It was interesting to see a couple of his cameras that accompanied him on his Egyptian visit.

From his collection are shown a range of paintings and also decorative art artefacts including gorgeous glass.

At the end of the visit we received a chocolate from their famous range and tasty it was.

In the courtyard where the Café tables are we saw the final fascinating segment. A large circle on the ground outlined where his motorcars were rotated for exit, after being driven in.

The casa was great to visit, appreciated the original finish and furnishings.

If you visit the chocolate shop inside, know that it's marked up because it's the cafe selling their chocolate - it's not the official shop!!! We found the original shop next to Casa Mila and prices were 20-30% cheaper. Buyer beware. Giving this a minus 1 star as this part was deceiving, we were given sample chocolate as part of tour to "sell" us on this and wasn't told about the official shop.

We enjoyed the house and all the details, especially the amount of furniture still in the home. You really got a sense of what it may have been like in its original time. Much more that the other homes we toured. The preservation and care taken to ensure it stays in as good of condition as possible was impressive. We did the guided tour at 10am as that was the first tour of the day. We did the 8:30 Casa Batllo prior and had about 30 min wait in-between. We didn’t realize the cafe was open, so if you do this schedule go to the cafe before your tour! Our guide was very nervous and checked his notes a few times, he struggled a bit to find the words he wanted in English. He warmed up a bit at the end as he relaxed more I think. I think he could use a bit more practice, but will be a great guide in the future. His passion for the house was evident in the at he shared his knowledge. When we went off the script a bit you could tell that he was very knowledgeable about the home.

This building next to Casa Batilo is in a completely different but wonderful style. It is carved on the windows and sides with stories of St. George and the dragon and the A's for the family Amatler in almond trees. The family made their money in chocolate and you can still buy some of it inside the building. Well worth a tour to see all of it.

I love the visit to this house, especially they have a lot of the original furniture so the rooms really give you the vision of how they use to live. Also, the furniture is stunning to admire.
The guided tour with the small group was great.
The visit ends in the coffee shop with the original kitchen.

A museum that could have been nice to visit, becomes unpleasant due to the conditions imposed. Although it has only five rooms and would have been very easy to supervise, the organizers decided that it should be done in small groups controlled by a timed audio guide. Thus, a visit for which 20-25 minutes would have been enough, becomes boring, artificially extending to over an hour. The museum keepers didn't understand that today's visitor gets the information he needs, he doesn't have to be forced to give him information he doesn't ask for.
