Top ways to experience Passeig de Gracia
The area
Neighbourhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

- Karim MaaroufCairo, Egypt892 contributionsWonderful street for shopping and architectureThis is a long and wonderful street. Lot's of shops including high end ones. Architectural highlights of the city such as Gaudi's casa ballo and la pedrera can also be found here.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 November 2023
- Sabrina C23 contributionsShopping and sightseeing locationThere are so many places to shop and eat here. The Casa Batillo and Casa Mila are here on the Passeig. Come to shop for all the luxury goods and see the sights. Bring a luggage with you to place your bags into though… and take a taxi back to your hotel if you shop… although relatively safe, be aware of your surroundings at all times.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 February 2024

Along this lovely avenue you will find some of the most famous Modernista buildings, plus some elegant shopping. A Metro line runs underneath. It leads up hill to Gracia, my favorite neighborhood for the cool vibe. Cafes along the way.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024

It has major transportation access by tourist and other buses, metro trains, and a train station that is much easier to use than Barcelona Sants.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024
- Steve_of_N21London, United Kingdom3,285 contributionsGood, modern and clean, but give me the noise and excitement of the old town every day. This wide tree lined avenue is certainly worth taking the time to visit and if you are going to see either Gaudí's La Predrera or Casa Batlló then obviously you will. This street is basically the start of the new part of Barcelona and was a showcase for Barcelona's bourgeoisie at the turn of the 19th century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Barcelona was expanding and the new boulevard connected the old village of Gràcia with the new city centre. There are some very impressive buildings on this boulevard but today it also has a reputation for housing Barcelona's most prestigious shops and you will find Gucci, Tommy Hilfinger, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Zara and many more up market brands along its length. Now I am sure there are those that will find that proposition exciting, but I am someone that would rather see something unique to the city I am visiting and not what you can find in every other major city in the world. So once I had taken a look at the most impressive buildings I couldn’t wait to make it down back to the Gothic Quarter and the El Born district.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 June 2024
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,282 contributionsAvenue of flaunted opulence!Passeig de Gràcia is the street where the rich and richer sought to out-spend each other in the late 1890s. House after house and building after building compete for the most outlandish (and often ugly) presentation. The owners were often wealthy entrepreneurs returning to Spain (with their dubious wealth) after the loss of Spain's colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines and elsewhere.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 June 2024

The restaurants are very good. The shopping is wonderful. We can walk up and down, and there are benches scattered around to take a break. I love this street.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 July 2024

The hotel is within walking distance of shopping, restaurants and transportation. The staff were very accommodating, knowledgeable and always smiling. There are some nice cafes to the right as you leave the front door and Attractions such as La Rambla, Gothic Quarters are an easy walk. It was real hot when we were there but cooler weather would make for a more enjoyable experience.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 August 2024

The street simply has all the best shops in Barcelona, everything from Zara to Burberry and the really high-end stuff. Even if you don’t want to go in some of the high-end potentially intimidating stores it’s a really nice place to just wander up and down. We booked a hotel on this street which was just the perfect location to go out and about in Barcelona. You can also find some of Gaudi’s famous work on this street and apparently the most expensive real estate in all of Spain

Floating on fanciful wings, we went in search for yet another series of Gaudi’s ethereal architectural delights along the Passeig de Gracia, except these were homes not churches. Passeig de Gracia, Barcelona’s Grand Avenue has the highest concentration of Art Nouveau and Modernist architecture in Europe. These unique designs let you know instantly that you have become part of a playful, if surreal new world.
I noticed there were a lot of tempting shops along this wide boulevard but we were on a mission so, no time for shopping!

Besides the famous “Block of Discord” with the Gaudi building, many of these buildings from the same period were often fanciful and over-the-top. If you chose to look above the street level shops, the buildings gave you a picture of a time at the turn of the 19th century when this area must have been THE place to live. I loved strolling this section of the city.

Definitely a must if you visit Barcelona. The beauty of the avenue with Modernist masterpieces and not just those of Gaudì. Spacious, bright and sumptuous, for those who love shopping. I also recommend visiting it in the evening: a little less crowded, especially towards the late hours and the buildings are beautifully lit, in particular Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, but not only.

It is one of the main avenues of the city and, without a doubt, the most monumental and opulent of all. On this avenue are some of the most emblematic buildings of Catalan modernism and especially Gaudí and Luís Doménech y Montaner.
Although a wide variety of luxury brands are housed in the commercial basements of the monumental buildings, you can also find other more affordable brands.
It is one of the avenues that you will surely walk on your visit to Barcelona.

At first sight, this may seem like just another posh shopping area with all the usual suspects of high end designers (Louis Vuitton, Montblanc, etc.).
If you look up, you will notice that these establishments are housed in precious modernista buildings. And most of the buildings have the name of the architect, an important reminder that Gaudi was not the only game in town.
While here, visit the Gaudi buildings. They are truly magnificent!

Originally it was a simple rural road that connected the city to the suburb of Gràcia, full of fields, orchards and gardens. Its name was “Camí de Jesús” – Path of Jesus” – as the only building present was a Franciscan convent, destroyed during the Spanish wars of independence.
At the beginning of the 19th century the city of Barcelona began a large urbanization project and in 1827 the current Passeig de Gràcia was inaugurated, enriched with delightful plants. Over time the street became the favorite of the city's upper middle class who moved here, building magnificent buildings and using the place as a real "walkway".
A small curiosity that makes Passeig de Gràcia even more special and inextricably linked to Modernism.
The street is dotted with 32 wrought iron street lamps.

Written 14 November 2017

Are the stores open on Hispanic Day (October 12, 2017)? I’m getting conflicting answers from the locals... any clarity would be great! Thanks!
Written 11 October 2017
Sorry, don't know for sure, but my experience of Spain and public holidays is that the larger shops in tourist cities stay open but the smaller ones close. But Hispanic Day in Barcelona right now who knows what they will do. Good luck!

Do I stay on the same platform when I get off the airport train and want to catch the Camallera train at Passeig de Gracia?

Sorry, I'm unable to help with this. We booked a company through Viator that picked us up at the airport and dropped us at our hotel. The fees were quite reasonable and the service was great. (Sorry -- I can't remember the name of the shuttle service!)

Hi Paul I will be coming to Barcelona some time in August and I'm looking for something different and unique, I live in Dubai so I need a different and authentic shopping experience with good deals. So what is your best recommended places.
Written 14 July 2016
I think Passeig de Gracia has a mix of international brand names and more local brand names. I actually like the latter much more. Like you, I prefer something authentic. I suggest you stay away from Las Ramblas/major shopping malls and head for the Gothic Quarter for quaint, artisan boutiques.
