Neighbourhood: Barrio Gòtico (Barri Gòtic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighbourhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de L’Angel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.

When visiting European cities for the first time, we sometimes do a Rick Steves self-guided walking tour, which is generally very interesting and informative. If you are in Barcelona, one of the neighborhoods you must see and visit is the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic), which is the oldest part of the city. Rick’s walk took us to the old Roman wall (Muralla Romana) near the Barcelona Cathedral. The original wall, which guarded the ancient Roman city of Barcino, was 25 ft. high, had 74 towers, and was over a mile around. It enclosed an area of 30 acres which had a population of over 40,000. This remaining section of the wall includes two round guard towers that protected the main city gate. There is also a section of the reconstructed Roman aqueduct that carried water to the old city. The wall is overshadowed by interest in the nearby cathedral but is interesting and certainly worth taking a look at for a few minutes.

Me, my girlfriend and a couple of friends walked through the Gothic quarter of Barcelona and arrived at Barcelona Cathedral and alongside parts of the Roman Wall with part of the aqueduct and Roman towers that are attached to the structure of the cathedral. The Archdeacon's House was installed there and is currently the Historical Archive of the City of Barcelona.
It is a very interesting and reasonably well preserved historical complex. It's worth visiting.

I was wandering around Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran, when I say this attraction by chance. I'd passed this before and just thought it was one side of one of the many churches in the area, but it turns out it;s actually part old Roman wall fortifications. I'm a great fan of classics, so I always love to see things like this in-situ, especially since the walls are well conserved.

Walking around the wonderful Gothic Quarter ( Barri Gótic ) and especially some of the plaza's near Barcelona Cathedral such as Placa Ramon Berenguer El Gran and Placa Del Rei you can find some great Roman walls,if you look closely at the base of Capella Santa Agata you will see that this chapel is built on the remains of the wall,in and around this area you can also view the Murella Romana, parts of the defensive walls,it's fascinating and although the architecture most associated with Barri Gótic is predominantly Gothic and Medieval it's nice to view the earlier and more historically important sites of this very interesting and beautiful city.
Well worth checking out.

This Roman wall is located in the square Plaza de Ramon Berenguer within the Gothic Quarter. The tall wall retains its medieval presence. Parts of the ruins are still visible next to the fort.

While Barcelona is primarily known for its medieval history forward, it does have an older history that it is built upon and nowhere is that seen better than the Roman fort. While much of it can be seen around the Cathedral site, it is not the only place the fort can be seen. This time we visited the southern part of the old city and found a large portion of the Roman Wall exposed in the Placa dels Traginers. You can also see how those walls from which the medieval city sprang were simply integrated into existing buildings.

This relatively unknown site in Barcelona isn't in a lot of guide books or websites for some reason. These old Roman defensive city walls are partially preserved including the two rounded guard towers that protected the city gate to Barcino (about 100 AD). There is also a section of the aqueduct that carried water to the old city. The old walls are right next to the Cathedral of Barcelona, so check them out while in the area.

This was the main gate to the Roman city of Barcino. The bottom of both towers contain Roman walls and remnants. The medieval towers were then built on top to expand the wall for defense. In gives you a great perspective to understand the gothic city of Barcelona and how one history was built on another before it. Also a great piece of art that spells out Barcino is located in front of the gate. While you are visiting the Cathedral, walk a little further to check this out. Picasso mural is also across the square from this attraction.

Historically interesting but not that well presented the old Roman Wall appears in a number of places in the old part of Barcelona. It does have some signage and the area it stands is interesting.

This is one of the many attractions, that make up the Gothic quarter, the remains of the roman walls just add to the attractions, they were built during the 1st and 4th century, as part of the roman empire.
