- Fiona SBoston, Massachusetts374 contributionsLovely walk and view of Girona, with enough medieval characteristics for the child in usGreat walk! We enjoyed the views and the little nooks and crannies. We parked on the street near the Institut d'Estudis Gironins, walked into the parking lot below and then had trouble figuring out how to get to the path. We ended up scrambling up a sort-of path in the northeast corner. You can ALSO walk past the Institut (a red hatch-marked sign had scared us off) on the road to its right and then take a left after the building for easier access.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 November 2023
- TravelKat21Bel Air, Maryland302 contributionsAwesome walkWe started our self-guided tour of Girona at the walls. It was fun to explore the pathways and various lookout spots to view the city and mountains. Lots of stairs and cobblestone. There are many entry and exit points.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 March 2024
- Ellis WProvince of Girona, Spain2 contributionsStroll Through HistoryMy walk along Passeig de la Muralla left a lasting impression. The city views were breathtaking, and the ancient walls resonated with history. Yet, clearer signage detailing the site's significance would elevate the experience. Nonetheless, it's a journey through time worth taking.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2024
- Carl&DawnDurham, United Kingdom57 contributionsDefinitely worth doing when in GironaReally interesting but lots of steps! Start near the cathedral to avoid the steeper climbs. More down hill from there! Definitely worth the walk as there are great views but take a bottle of water in hot weather because it takes a while.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2024

These city walls kind of summed up Girona for us. We had very little knowledge if any of the city beforehand but were blown away by the architecture and history. These Walls are the best demonstration of that I can think of.
True there isn’t lots of information to see about in around the place but we had prepared by downloading a free city app which told us everything we needed to know.
You need sturdy shoes as they do take some climbing and occasionally there are turrets along the way with spiral staircase as you can walk up. The views are breathtaking!
The history is remarkable and they are kept immaculately.
I must see if you are in town.

Girona is a very beautiful city. Here you can not only walk along the old streets, but also climb the walls and see everything from a different angle. The beginning of the construction of the Fortress Walls dates back to 75 AD. Then they represented a fortification system, thanks to which the city was well protected from attacks, which happened quite often in those days.

Even if you only do a short section of the Walls, you must do it for the magnificent views of this lovely city. Plus it’s totally free. Access points onto the walls are not particularly well signposted on the ground, but tourist maps have them marked. There are various towers along the walls where you can get an even higher vantage point. We just did one section from near the Arab Baths to the University.

Learn a bit of history and see the beautiful city from a different perspective on the wall walk. Well preserved in general, bring a hat and water, you can walk from one side of the city to the other on the walls. There are a lot of stairs, and, at times, the path gets a bit convoluted, but getting lost is part of the exploration! There is not a lot of public information or signposts, a free tourist map will help though.

The old wall walk in Girona is free and has some great views over the city and surrounding area. From the old town, it is quite a climb up to the base of the wall and then some more stairs up onto the wall itself. We just did lots of short rests on the way and were fine.

Be advised that the entrance by the Cathedral is around behind it and up past the art museum, not the other side that leads to a walk through gardens as we discovered. A fair amount of steps so you need to be mobile, but it is worth it for giving a good view over the city. Can be hot so have water with you and take your time - 1/2 to 3/4 hour minimum, but may well be longer. If you come down at the Market end of the walls there is an excellent gelateria as you come to the road leading back into the old city and a small café restaurant that is more "local".

A relaxing languid stroll of an evening was a wonderful way to close the day. Panoramic vistas of the cityscape were grand to admire.
Over about an hours we had a memorable experience of exploring the former defences with towers, now a must-do attraction.

This is such a highlight in Lovely Girona! You can't miss the walls, it's free and easy to do on your own! The views along the walls are spectacular, especially as you look back into the walled city. We walked the walls starting near the Arab baths and walked the whole way to the end. This is the easier way to go, as there are many stairs to climb up if you go the opposite way. After exiting the walls, we turned and right and had a short walk back, enjoying a gelato along the way.

Where is the best place to start the walk around the Muralla de Girona? Is the signage fairly good?
Written 24 April 2024
Yes, that's the turn I spoke of beyond the yellow building - it is a ruin and the beginning of the path. Just west of that, on Google maps, you will see a flat red square roof - that is an actual standing tower. You can get up on the wall by entering that red topped towed. Have fun!

I am going to Girona next week. Mostly, we are going to roam around using Public Transport. How efficient is their Public transport?
Should I go by bus from Girona to Lloret de Mar?
Written 16 August 2018
Hi there
We actually went from Canet de Mar by train and changed trains at some remote place I can't remember, but then got off in Girona where we walked all over from where we stayed right in the centre. Never used any public transport, but did get good exercise! Martie's Coffee Shop was a good stop along the way.

Bonne visite

Can I travel to Girona from Barcelona by public transportation? If so, how long is the trip and what is the cost? Thanks!
Written 4 October 2017
I would include Besalu. Take the bus from just off the Passeig de Gracia. Take the bus from there to Girona and train back to Barcelona. Very nice day trip.

Hi, I'm a radio reporter. Where do you suggest I go to capture "the sounds of Girona"? Thanks.
Written 15 August 2017
I agree with the prior answer and would add that there is often live musicians in the ruins/park behind the cathedral. It is slightly uphill from the back of the church. Girona is a world class bicycling City, I would find a bike shop for the sound of cyclists wheels. Water sounds from the river through town and possibly the daily market just off the river.

how long does it take to walk around the walls of Girona. thanks
Written 12 August 2017
This is a great place to visit. It is not a complete wall around the old city. In other words, you do not end up where you started. You can start at either end, but the wall slopes slightly so if you start at one end you will be walking uphill all the way round it, whereas if you start at the left hand end (behind cathedral), you will be walking downhill - much the better option. Either way, it is a really good walk. There are steps at either end to climb to the top of the wall.

Ciao :) vorrei sapere la visita è gratuita o si paga?
