- FiMc1West Midlands, United Kingdom100 contributionsReally interesting place with stunning viewsA beautiful place and the cablecar up was brilliant. Nice sandwiches in the cafe and the furnicular up to the top of the mountain was great too. Such amazing views although sadly it was rainy and grey on the day we went. The ticket options were a bit confusing and it wasn’t clear which queue to get in for what. Overall worth a visit but the train back to Barcelona was chocca and we had to stand the whole way back which after all the walking was exhaustingVisited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 November 2023
- TeeleTallinn, Estonia860 contributionsReally cool locationThe monastery is located in a very cool place. Parking costs €7. We didn't buy a ticket to enter the monastery, so we enjoyed the surroundings of the monastery. There are several viewing platforms and a large courtyard in front of the monastery, which is free to enter. If you are already going there, I recommend hiking in the mountains, the trails start at the monastery.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 November 2023

First of all I would recommend watching YouTube videos ahead of time just so you are prepared since it is somewhat complicated to get there. Initially we signed up for a tour but all they were going to do is pick us up and drive us there. The cost structure makes no sense and was not cheap by any means. So we did it on our own which was not difficult. The R5 train leaves every hour from Plaza de Espanya and there is a ticket booth downstairs from the main floor specifically to sell tickets ahead of time. I would recommend getting the Trans Montserrat ticket which was 45 euros. It included everything but the cost of the boy's choir. It takes about an hour to get to the base of Montserrat then you catch an amazing cog wheel train up to the monastery. About 1/3 of the people on the train were not able to get on the cogwheel train initially. While they bought tickets for the R5, they did not buy a ticket to for the cogwheel train to the monastery nor the funicular from the monastery up the mountain. Fortunately, the ticket collector was very nice since people were in panic mode. There is a ticket machine, and he was helping them get their tickets. The train waited for everyone which again was very nice since it leaves every hour. I would recommend you buy your ticket the day before just in case there is a line at the ticket booth at Plaza de Espanya since if you miss the train, you are hanging around there for an hour. - Silk_ZitherWellington, New Zealand87 contributionsFantastic place for a day hike!If you love landscapes, religious buildings, and hiking all in one, this is the place to come! You need a whole day to fully explore this place which includes all the hiking trails. But be sure to go to Pl. Espanya station the day before and buy a combined ticket which includes everything you need (including a buffet which I highly recommend). On the day, I would take the 1st train (around 8am) of the R5 line to "Monistrol de Montserrat" so you have plenty of time to explore the place. Most people who come here end up missing a lot of the trails. There are 2 rack railways within Montserrat (Sant Joan & Santa Cova) which will take you to different areas of the mountain. This is included in the combined ticket. You should also download a map of the mountain onto your phone when you purchase the ticket, and study it and plan your walk accordingly. Happy hiking!Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 January 2024

I wish we bought package without train tickets from Barcelona. - geo3Calgary, Canada1,893 contributionsAbbey is great, the mountain and the hiking is even betterI got here by means of a bus from the main train station in Barcelona. It arrived at Montserrat (main area) at 10 AM and left at 6 PM, which was a good amount of time to explore the monastery area and then do some hiking. The monastery and area is very nice, but it's the mountain itself that is the star attraction. Stunning scenery! and several great trails. Were I to return, I would stay overnight. There's enough to see in the area to justify two days, if the weather is good for hiking on the mountain.Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 April 2024

Followed by a nice lunch at the farmhouse…I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere there. Our tour guide Trinidad, did a great job.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2024

Even though this park cannot be seen all in one day, what we did visit and experience was enough to spark my genuine interest in learning more. Prepare to walk, bring some water and be conscious to the preservation of the grounds and the park.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024
- RobynradGreater Sydney, Australia800 contributionsThis is a very special placeWe had a fantastic time on our visit to Montserrat. We bought the Trans Montserrat combined ticket which included return train travel, return cable car, entrance to the Basilica and unlimited rides on the funiculars. I had also bought Boys Choir tickets on line a month or so earlier. When we arrived at the monastery the fog was just coming over so we had a coffee before deciding to do some walks and catch the St Joan funicular regardless of the weather. Once back at the Basilica we enjoyed a good look around before waiting for the 1pm Boys Choir performance. It was beautiful. Upon leaving the Basilica we were happy to see that the fog had completely lifted and we were able to catch the funicular and walk again in a different direction and enjoy spectacular views. Our last walk was out to the Cross which has the best views back over the monastery. I would definitely recommend a day spent in this beautiful place- you don't need to do a tour- just wear your hiking boots and remember to book the Boys Choir.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 June 2024

I paid a visit here in the middle of August. If not for the beautiful views and serenity while hiking up to the place, I'd say that it wasn't as exciting as promoted.
When one reaches the monastery and its surrounding areas, there are again lots of tourists, restaurants, shops - so, the spot feels way too commercialized.
The entrance to the monastery is not free whereas tickets can only be bought online: at least, I couldn't find any ticket offices and their security staff shared QR codes with the web link. For some events you're supposed to buy tickets in advance - e.g., to see a short performance of the choir. Inside the monastery there might be long queues on the way to the St Mary's statue - an average wait time was ~20 minutes.

We took the train from Barcelona (Pl. Espanya, where there are signs to guide you to the dedicated ticket booth). Train was busy but not packed and took an hour to Montserrat town. We opted for the rack railway to the Abbey as we thought the cable car might be busy (you need to decide which you're going to take when you buy your train ticket) and we were right. The views from the train up the mountain were spectacular. Sit on the left hand side going up.
The Abbey is in a stunning position and the views of the surrounding area are wonderfully far reaching. The main buildings themselves don't have a huge amount of architectural merit, but they are pretty big and in that setting they stand out. I thought the Basilica to be the most beautiful interior I have ever seen in a church. It was fairly dark inside when we entered and the whole place seemed to sparkle and shine in the half light. After the boys' choir they switched on the main lights and you could certainly tell the difference.
The funicular to the summit is a must for even more spectacular views and some long walks if that's your thing.
Food options: the self-service eatery looked busy and unappetising, but the buffet restaurant further down was not bad (about €17 per head I think)
Gift shops: you won't be stuck for choice; a huge selection of stuff from the usual tat to some good local food and drink and, of course, religious paraphernalia.
It was a long day out, but travelling independently meant we could stay as long as we wanted. It was very busy in the morning, but by 3pm the crowds had pretty much disappeared.
If you have a day to spare and even if you don't, look no further than this beautiful Abbey and its awesome location.

As if there isn’t enough to do in Barcelona itself, it makes a great base for day trips in the surrounding region. One of these is to Abadia de Montserrat or Montserrat Abbey. There are numerous tour options available, or one can simply do it yourself as we did.
Take a metro (subway) to Plaça d'Espanya and then use the regional rail system R5 train to Montserrat. The metro and rail stations are connected by a tunnel, something we did not know then, so there is no need to go up and outside and cross the square, unless you want to see it. The trains depart one level below the subway.
The R5 runs every hour at quarter to the hour. Tickets including the trip up to the Abbey are 24 Euros return. And can be purchased from the vending machines there. They are easy to use and there is usually a helpful staff member to assist.
Be specific though that ticket covers the train there and the cable car up and down to the summit. The wording can be a bit confusing especially if you’re in a hurry. If you don’t want the cable car then you ride one more stop to and purchase tickets on the mountain train that goes up to the Abbey. Both offer spectacular views. We opted to take the train up and the cable car down to maximize the experience. The train trip from Barcelona is just under two hours. There are washrooms on the trains and as of time of writing masks were still required to be worn and this was enforced.
Once at the summit there are several things to do. You can visit the museum, stroll the Abbey grounds, and/or hike or take one of the two funiculars to various outlying spots. All offer spectacular views.
Unless you get there real early expect crowds, the place is popular. If you want to enter the Basilica to see the Black Madonna or hear the choir, expect a long line up or take one of the tours that include this with “skip the line”. Even without these there is more than enough to take up a whole day there, or even a couple of days if you have the time.
There is of course an over priced restaurant, coffee shop and gift shop if needed. There was also a small market set up on the day we were there, selling souvenirs, and local honey and other products.
When your tour is finally done, don’t forget to visit the small café Bar el Rincon at the train station for the cable car station. By this time, you’ve probably earned a cold drink.

The Abadia de Montserrat has been Catalunya's most important pilgrimage site since the 11th century. It was destroyed by Napolean in 1812 but the restoration began in 1858, with the latest facade was only completed in 1968. Today, the Monastery had rebuilt and it is the spiritual and cultural heart of many Catalans. There are approximately 70-100 Benedictine monks carrying daily duties at the Monastery and they just live in a building next to the Basilica.
The Monastery's top attractions are its facade and its LaMoreneta.
I found the exterior of Abbey of Montserrat spectacularly stunning as it's like a castle which majestically standing within the serrated mountains. One of the best picturesque shots of the whole Monastery would be from outside of the Funicular de Sant Joan's station. However, the main attraction is still the LaMoreneta (The Black Madonna), a small wooden statue of Black Virgin which painted in polychrome. It was carved by St.Luke in the 9th century but a series of test results showed that the last repaint took place in the 18th century. Many locals said LaMoreneta has unbelievably healing power (and I've to say it really worked for me/ my friend!) I queued for more than 1 hour to get in but it's totally worth it.
Abadia de Montserrat is a MUST SEE attraction when you're at Montserrat. (I believe it'd be good to visit when you're there, even if you're not a Catholic.)

A very easy day out from Barcelona, and one I highly recommend. Get the train from Pl Espanya, look around the large roundabout until you spot the lift with the big picture of Montserrat on! Go down the stairs, then go down another set, on your right is the booth selling tickets for the day out. We opted for the track railway, really happy we did as it was an epic journey! It's the second stop in Monserrat, the cable car being the first. The advantage on the way home is getting on the train first and getting a seat! On the train sit on the left hand side going towards the day out, on the way back sit on the right for the best views.
The track railway takes about 25 minutes to wind it's way up the mountain side, it was an amazing journey, again best to be seated on the left hand side going up, right going down! From the train setting off at Barcelona (20 to the hour) to the top of the mountain was about 1.5 hours.
As a minimum I recommend buying a ticket up the Saint Joan Funicular for the amazing views at the top. Great walks both left and right as you exit (toilets here too). I wish I'd bought a single as you can actually walk down the mountain back to the monastery (about 45 minutes walk). Instead I ended up doing another very steep climb up to the viewing platform to take the famous picture of the monastery from above, I was gasping and sweaty by the time I reached it! That walk is accessed after coming out of the Saint Joan funicular and heading up the road which is dotted with saints and sculptures. A handy water fountain is at the bottom for filling up your water bottle.
We took a picnic although there are two places to eat, it was just less stress and there is plenty of seating dotted about, overlooking the monastery.
The railway down handily told you which trains went down and connected with the train heading home, these were marked R5 next to them. They were every half an hour. The young man at the train station spoke excellent English and was really helpful!
A wonderful connection with nature, and the church. As I said a nice way to escape a city and get away from it all.

Bought the TOT Montserrat tickets online but there was little information provided for how to make it happen. Get yourself to Placa dEspana, follow the signs in the station for Montserrat and provide a print out copy of your ticket QR code to the person in the booth. There was no information about food included, a map, or any other information besides the train track line. We took the train, decided to get out at Aeri to take the gondola for the view (bought the additional ticket 8 euros) and went to the museum. We visited the general basilica (chose not to join the separate line for the icon) and went up and down the saint joan funicular. With all the forms of transportation involved and waiting at each stage, the trip took the entire day. We never figured out the lunch.

I used the Tot Montserrat card, which covered the train ride from Barcelona, the cable car up and down the mountain, entry to the Montserrat Museum, and lunch at the self serve restaurant. The abbey is absolutely stunning with incredible mountain views and some of the most beautiful architecture. The audiovisual experience is a must-do, and covers the history and geography of the mountain right up to the daily lives of the monks who live here. The insides of the Basilica were breathtaking and the Santa Maria is more beautiful in person than she is in photos. Even the gift shop were very reasonably priced!

This is a comment on getting there. We bought the "Tot Monserrat Aeri" tickets which include the train to Montserrat, cable car, buffet lunch (but not at the Montserrat restaurant Mon-Thurs - it's somewhere else), the funicular and access to the virgin Mary and museum. It does not include the boys choir performance at 1pm for which we bought separate tickets.
Even though we left our accommodation at 10.30am, we needed to catch two trains to Place Espanya to redeem our QR code email tickets for an actual ticket. You must do this. However, we came up at the wrong Metro exit, which is easy to do. We found an "I" info booth, she directed us to the correct entrance. There was a Montserrat information booth who directed us to another set of stairs. She did not mention a ticket. We attempted to use our QR code at the ticket machines because both offices said "just scan your phone". After a few attempts, we looked around and saw another booth. There, she scanned the phone and gave us tickets. I asked about which exit we take and she showed us where to get off foe the Cable car.
We are currently on the train which leaves at 11.36am. The times for the train were vague saying "once per hour" but a bit of googling found the timetable.
Essentially, this isn't a negative review, we haven't yet done the experience, but it looks like we will only just make the boy's choir at 1pm and only because we booked the cable car which is faster than the rack railway.
I guess I'm saying, give yourself plenty of time for this experience and possibly expect to get a bit lost if you are like us. We have been catching trains for a month in Europe so aren't novices - just don't leave your timing too tight!

Magnificent location! Stunning natural beauty augmented by an amazing abbey. So many highlights! I would suggest you ride the cable car up and down. Good parking at the cable car base and stunning views both up and down.
Try to arrange your timing so you see the boys' choir perform in the Abbey. I would also recommend reservations in advance to get an up close and personal look at the Black Madonna.
If you get a clear day it is an experience you will never forget. There is also a nice restaurant with good portions and good food. Try a bottle of Kava along with the meal. It is a product of the abbey ....

Do you have to pay to visit basilica of Sangrada family

For tours you must pay indeed. If you go without a guide I am not sure anymore. Maybe you can find it online.

Здравствуйте! Подскажите, как можно попасть на выступление хора?
Written 5 October 2019
The choir sings every day at 13:00 in the Basilica. It is very crowded, you need to get there early. They shut the doors 10 mins before the choir starts. The performance lasts about ten minutes.

Hi, has anyone used busplana from salou? This is our 5th time to salou and never been to the Montserrat, is there any special clothing requirements inside the monastery? Thanks

No one was checking people at the door, as they do at the Vatican. However, I’s sure respectful dress as described above is appreciated. What I found disrespectful was the number of people taking selfies with the black Madonna.

What's the road access and parking like up there? I'm thinking of taking my bike too.

It is a stunning road! We went in our rental car at about 8:30 am on a Friday morning in May. It was empty. Plenty of parking. In fact about 3 or 4 other cars only when we got there. Try to beat the crowds who arrive at 9:00 by cable car and public transport. When we got back at about 15:00 after climbing the mountain, the parking was full but not crazy cramped like the horror stories I read and believed. In fact, the whole experience was an absolute breeze. Don't believe only the negative reviews. Of course I have no idea about parking a bicycle, but the info office was super helpful. I am sure they would answer any questions if you phoned or sent an email. A motor cycle would be perfectly fine too. You would love the road if you have a motor cycle and go really early. Enjoy it. My husband LOVED the driving experience.

looking for recommendations for Montserrat and wine tours . I have been able to find tours only doing either one of them.

Montserrat is absolutely beautiful. You must plan to spend several hours here, as there are other small chapels and views to enjoy. Please bring good walking shoes and an extra bottle of water or two. There are food vendors and a restaurant and bathrooms. Lots of walking up and down small hills. Enjoy.

We went up by Montserrat rack railway and came down by our coach bus. Either you can go up or down by Rack Railway or Funicular Sant Joan or Cable Car.
