The hike to the top of Jeroni Mountain was a very intense experience. The beginning of the hiking trail is in the area of the Montserrat monastery. It took a while to find it. But if you start coming from the parking lot, you need to walk to the end of the road, you will pass the tourist information kiosk and the entrance to the monastery courtyard. There are stairs straight ahead at the end of the road. You have to climb them and then just follow the signs. The hiking trail was very well marked. There are different trails, we took trail number one as we wanted to go out to the highest peak. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the top, we came down about 1 hour and 5 minutes. The trail is not the easiest, because it mostly goes uphill, and some of the climbs are quite steep. The terrain was very varied - stairs, paved road, stones, forest road, etc. But the views were really amazing, especially when you got to the top. It was a really amazing experience. We went there in October and the wind was extremely strong, so you have to think about your clothes, it's definitely very hot in the summer and the sun is shining. Parking costs €7 in the area of the monastery. You can also leave it on the side of the road for free, but then you have to walk about 2 km from there to the starting point of the hiking trail.

Sant Jeroni is the highest peak in Montserrat Mountains, in Bages Region (center of Catalonia), 30km far from Barcelona. It is a great point of views, from where you can see a lot of mountains with curious shapes and the surroundings. Fantastic place as lookout and a pic-nic spot, where a lot of people lunch. Also, the trekking from Monastery (or from the town of Monistrol de Montserrat, in the bottom of the mountain) to Sant Jeroni is one of the most know excursions in Montserrat and really a lovely place, where you can see probably the most curious shapes. The typical place, where you can go with your friends, who lives in other countries.

Most of the reviewers here are more ambitious than I am. I took the easier route by taking the funicular de Saint Joan, which does much of the elevation gain work for you. From there the trail starts off with spectacular views and continues with even more spectacular views. The trail was in good condition for its entire length, although hiking boots were certainly helpful at times just for ankle support, as there are rocky areas on the trail at times.

It took me about three to four hours there and back, but that was at a leisurely pace and with a break for lunch. Even if you don't have time to do the entire trail, even a portion of it starting from the funicular would be well worthwhile.

This is one of the most beautiful hikes I have ever done, and I live close to the Canadian Rockies so that is saying something.

There are other great hikes on the Montserrat mountain, too, so it is very easy to spend at least an entire day here. If I were to return, I would stay overnight and spend the best part of two days doing more of the hikes.

Highly recommended.

We hiked up to Saint Jeroni from the Monastery of Monserrat. The times listed in the hiking guide are true for fast walkers. If you want to take your time add another 30 minutes each way.

The hike is worth the effort. There are amazing views along the way and the pinnacle is breathtaking.

It seems the information about this hike and getting to Montserrat are quite inconsistent. This is how we did it - We went to Plaza España, the entrance for the R5 train is on the western side of the plaza. You'll see graphics and signs for the Montserrat train. If you only want the train and cable car, the ticket machine is easy to use and in English. The information booth only sells the package tickets and will direct you to the information booth at the monastery for a hiking trails map, so you don’t really need to stop there. Since you’ll only be traveling one way on the funicular, you do not need to buy a package, which will be a few euros more. Buy your funicular tickets at the funicular station on the mountain. The Barcelona trains to Montserrat are well marked “R5 Manresa”. Get off at a stop called “Montserrat Aeri” to take the cable car, which is one stop before “Monistrol de Montserrat”, which is the stop for the rack railway to the monastery. Once at the monastery, go the information booth to get a map if you want one. Take the Sant Joan funicular to the start of the trail, which is to your right when you exit. The paths are well marked. Hike out to Sant Jeroni on Trail 1 and hike back to the monastery on Trail 2. As others have stated, there are steep parts to this trail, but the very steepest sections have steps. The steps are a bit uneven and have a slightly higher rise than regular steps. The hike is not straight up and straight down, it levels out between ascents and descents, so you always get a little rest. A good amount is flat. We are casual hikers, and in fair shape. For us, the hike was challenging in parts, but well worth the effort. We took our time, took photos, and stopped to eat sandwiches. It took us about 2 hours to reach the look out and about 1.5 hours to descend to the monastery. We got to the monastery around noon, bought sandwiches and headed to the funicular. Consider bringing your lunch to save a little time and eat what you like. There are a few lookouts where you can sit and have your lunch. Before you start, be sure to check the times of the last funicular, cable car and train to make all of your connections. We took the 5:30pm funicular to catch the 5:45pm train. You’ll definitely need hiking shoes, as there is a lot of loose gravel and rock on the trails. Some of the trail was a bit wet and slippery also. The temperature was about 58 degrees, and sunny, and since you’ll be hiking, you can dress lighter. In December much of the trail was in the shade and a good deal is in the trees, but there were very few people on the trail. We were the only ones on the trail for a good distances. Our bonus – we saw a family of mountain goats along the way!

If you go to Montserrat - which you should! - it's definitely worthwhile to take the funicular up beyond the Basilica and monastery for some amazing views and a variety of walks. We walked to the summit of Sant Jeroni which is the highest peak. There are gorgeous views in many directions, we saw monarch butterflies, climbers scaling incredible monoliths, there were lots of wildflowers in bloom - wild thyme, cistus (rock rose) many others. Take a picnic and some water and stop to enjoy the summit. The day we visited there were a number of vendors by the Basilica selling locally made cheese, honey, sausage, quince and fig paste etc.. It was wonderful stuff and made a great snack to bring along. The signs say that it's a 1 hour walk to Sant Jeroni - but we took 3 hours return because there are so many places to stop for pictures. It's about 10km round trip. It's a climb but at the same time it's quite easy walking. We didn't have hiking or even running shoes on - just leather walking shoes meant for city walking with very little traction. It was fine. Take along some layers. It can be windy up there.

We bought the Trans Montserrat ticket at the Espana train station. Once you get to the monastery, either via rack railway or cable car, you take the funicular to the top where this hike begins. The hike is mostly level except for the last 1/4 mile. The views are 360 degrees and beautiful. The round trip hike took us about 3 hours. You don't need hiking shoes. A good pair of sneakers will suffice. We packed a lunch. Due to time constraints, we had to choose between hearing the choir at 1:00 or doing this hike. No regrets.

You need to take the Sant Joan funicular to bring you higher up the mountain, before starting on the Sant Jeroni path. We enjoyed the expansive and amazing views from the top of the mountains. If you arrive here early in the morning like we did, it's extremely peaceful and feels wonderful. Comfortable walking/hiking shoes are a must as there is no clean path, only a sandy, stony one.

Advice #1: At some point of the path, you would definitely need some hiking gear to go further, so if you are not equipped for that you can slowly make your way back down. Advice #2: For those with young children, watch them. There are no bars or barriers on top of the mountain.

P/S: It is highly recommended that you book your tickets in advance (http://www.barcelonaturisme.com), so that you need not be too confused or worked up at the train station trying to get the correct tickets. We bought the Trans Monserrat tickets, which comes with the return train tickets for the ride from Plaza Espanya station to Monistrol de Montserrat station (for the tram ride up to Montserrat; for those taking cable car, stop at the earlier Aeri Cable Car stop; you have to decide during online purchase if you're taking the tram or cable car) and unlimited rides on the funiculars (access to the church would be a given). You can also get the Tot Monserrat tickets, which provides additional access to the Montserrat Museum (nothing exceptional though) and a free cafeteria lunch.

P/P/S: Do walk past the abbey and carpark to the terrace/space housing the Monument to Ramón Llull. This is another place for great views of the surrounding hills and mountains!

We did the hike from Monasterry to Top of Sant Jeroni, in late August. We took train from Espanya, there is a separate special train, not the metro, so you have to go to the right station, if in doubt, ask the tourist booth at Espanya. One hour train ride from Espanya to Montserrat, we did the train + cable car combo return ticket, cost ~ 31 euros per person. Started climb from Monasterry, about first 1/2 half hour is concrete steps, then rest of one and half hour is hike kinda lateral not steep, to Sant Jeroni. All in took us 4 hours round trip, say 2 hrs up, 1/2 hour spent at the peak, and 1 1/2 hr hike down, and that is with a lot of stops and pictures. Budget all day, we caught 930AM train amd took the 5PM train back. Excellent, really recommend it, we all felt this was highlight of our Barcelona trip. We all felt, something hard to do, something hard to get to, not everybody could do it, and the hike was not too hard, and the views were beautiful!!

We did the long trail (about 4 hours) to Sant Jeroni without the funicular, because if you take the funicular you will miss an hour of a beautiful hike with an amazing view. If you take a look in the map added below you can see our recommended trail.

The 'green trail' is the trail you will miss if you take the funicular, and we suggest to do it by foot. Then, you will walk on the 'red trail' to the top until you reach Sant Jeroni. The view from the top is breathtaking (!!) and we suggest to do it in a none cloudy day. Afterwards you should walk on the 'blue trail' until you reach the starting point.
