On Calle Arenal, very near Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, this church is one of the oldest in Madrid. Inside the church is decorated with beautiful statues and paintings, including one by El Greco. The interior décor is typical of Spanish Catholic churches with an emphasis on the passion and death of Jesus. A must see church in the heart of Madrid.

This church is the historic Austrian district of Madrid, very close to Sol square. It is a mudejar style building with bricks. The inside is beautiful, it contains different chapels. I did not see the painting by El Greco, but I will come back to see it. The dome has also beautiful frescoes.

Happened upon this church and I entered- it was beautiful. One of the oldest churches in Madrid. Beautiful painting by El Greco of The expulsion of the money changers from the temple. I arrived in time for daily mass and it was beautiful.
The church is unspectacular from the outside, but breathtaking from the inside

This church lately surprises me more and more every day because its decoration varies according to the liturgical calendar. I have discovered that in addition to the dress-up nativity scene (with life-size figures) set up every year, different temporary altars are created in the Sevillian style. After Christmas you can visit the one dedicated to the Virgin Candelaria and a little later to an Ecce Homo during the time of Lent. It is curious to enter and find the temple new and different at the same time.

The Iglesia San Gines is one of the oldest churches in Madrid, surviving from medieval Madrid. The church exterior is unusually designed in having an atrium enclosed by railings on Calle Arenal, which leads into the main courtyard of the church.

The church is deceptively big. The interior is laid out according to a Latin cross with a nave and two aisles separated by semicircular arches. One the sides of the aisles like many churches are many chapels. Many of which are designed in a mixed of Neoclassical, Romanticism and Baroque, some of which are highly ornate.

There are volunteers who provided guided tours inside and well worth the visit. A real hidden gem in super busy, super touristy Calle Arenal.

This church has a plain façade with a loggia in front. The surprise upon entering the church is that there is plenty of beautiful art in the church. The original church was constructed in 1645 by the architect Juan Ruiz. There was a fire in 1824 that destroyed much of the church, but between 1870 and 1872, the architect Jose Maria Aguilar reconstructed the church.

The main altar has a copy of The Martyrdom of San Gines, the original having been destroyed in the 1824 fire. There are impressive green marble columns at the main altar. The Santisimo Cristo Chapel has a crucifix of ivory done by Alonso Cano, as well as the painting of Cristo de la Humildad. There is a painting by El Greco, Expulsion de los Mercaderes del Templo. Lucas Jordan painted La Presentacion de Nuestra Señora. There are also four angels done in bronze by Pompeyo Leoni, and these were gilded by Juan Ortiz.

San Gines is a beautiful church inspite of its plain facade.

After being in Spain for five days, I have come to realize that this country is ultra rich ch in history, sacred art, cathedrals, people, food, culture. I feel like I am repeating myself, but the cathedrals are such a treasure and each one is beautiful in its own right. The Cathedral del Gines was originally built in about the year 1000, and was later reconstructed in the 1600’s. My husband and I decided to attend the noon mass, though my Spanish is rusty and I could only make out about 30% of what was being said and Read. That didn’t really matter, though, because though we are not Catholic, we felt in awe of the beauty of the holy worship service and grateful for having had the opportunity to be surrounded by such beauty and a sense of holiness and reverence. There are magnificent statues of the Saints, Jesus Christ, and lovely stained glass art abounds. Because it was Sunday we did not feel it was right to walk around and take pictures, but suffice it to say that this Cathdral is a must see if you are going to Madrid and are interested in any of the following:

Cathedrals
Church history
Sacred art
