The Puerta Cerrada square (or Puerta Cerrada) is located in the La Latina neighborhood of the historic center of the Spanish city of Madrid. It is formed by the disorganized confluence on the street of Segovia, old roads such as the Cava Baja, or the streets of Nuncio, San Justo, Pasa, Gomez de Mora, Cuchilleros and Latoneros.

The area
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Puerta Cerrada is a square located in the oldest part of Madrid, in the La Latina neighborhood. The Puerta Cerrada square takes its name from the old gate built here in the 12th century. The square has an irregular shape. In the part where the square widens the most, we see a large stone cross. It is a decorative element built in 1783, but it came to replace another that is believed to have been built shortly after the Puerta Cerrada was demolished. One of the main characteristics of the Puerta Cerrada square is its murals on the buildings. They date back to 1983 . The murals that we see here are the work of the artist Alberto Corazon. Many bars are found in the Puerta Cerrada square, and also in its surroundings. The area of interest for all visitors coming to the capital, it offers the highest concentration of restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues.

A very pleasant part of old Madrid with bundles of history including buildings set upon the old city walls.

Plaza De Puerta Cerrada is a short distance just down the road from Plaza de la Armeria where the Royal Palace, the Catedral de Santa Maria and Plaza Mayor, are located. It is interestingly located right in the middle of the intersection of several streets, which is how the plaza is formed! It is supposed to be quite historical and the Spanish name stands for Closed Door or Closed Gate Plaza. In much older days the Gate at this spot allowed travellers to enter the city of Madrid by entering what is now known as Plaza Mayor. However at this spot there was a problem. It was easy for thieves and robbers to hide in secret areas in amongst the walls and made it dangerous for most people. So the authorities decided to close this gate. That is, then, how the name was derived. Plaza de Puerta Cerrada, or Closed Gate Plaza. Today, of course the old danger is not there, instead travellers will find plenty of cafes and restaurants.

One plaza I always love to visit is Plaza De Puerta Cerrada on any holiday I take to this most beautiful of city's.
It's not the prettiest square in Madrid,far from it in fact but Plaza De Puerta Cerrada ( Closed Doors ) has bags of character ,it's an historic plaza ,there's a famous stone cross here that's very emblematic,in days gone by at important street crossings and intersections a cross used to be places at the crossing or intersection ,when the Mayor Of Madrid Jose Y Galindo gained office between 1805-1808 who was a devout atheist he ordered the removal of all crosses except for the stone cross on Plaza De Puerta Cerrada as this cross was considered a symbol of conquest of Madrid by the Christians ,the square nowadays is famous for the amount of pubs,bars and restaurants around the square and the beautiful murals adorning the sides of the buildings ,these were done by artist Alberto Corazon in 1983 ,all in all it's a great and lively plaza to check out if you're in the area

My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to Plaza De Puerta Cerrada to visit two great pubs namely Taberna La Fontanilla and El Madrono which are more or less on this square.
Plaza De Puerta Cerrada ( Closed Doors ) is a historic plaza,the famous cross here is emblematic, at important street intersections a cross was placed there but when the mayor of Madrid Jose Marquina Y Galindo gained office between 1805 - 1808 who was known as the atheist mayor ordered the removal of all crosses except this one on Plaza De Puerta Cerrada as it was considered the symbol of conquest of Madrid by the Christians, it's a much photographed cross and makes for great photographic opportunities, theres also plenty of pubs,bars and restaurants throughout this area around the plaza and some unusual and eye catching architecture plus some great street art.
A great square, well worth checking out if your in the area.
