The area

Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Pilar was an excellent host! She really delighted us with her cooking and giving us a brief history lesson on Valencian traditions. My family really enjoyed the experience and we left experts in Paella cooking. She is very charismatic and fun. Also recommended a flamenco show that was nothing short of excellent. For sure the two best activities we did in our trip to Madrid. You cannot miss this one!

Paloma was so much fun! We enjoyed learning to make traditional sangria, tortilla, and a meat paella. While different parts of the meal cooked, she shared pictures, stories, and history behind the food and of Valencia. Just be sure when you go to be the first couple/group to get 'bits' of meat for your paella, because traditional paella uses ALL the animal bits.

Paloma is a very enthusiastic teacher and chef. She is very good with kids (ages 10, 12, and 14) and different cooking skill levels. Everyone loved our afternoon with her. This class is a great, hands-on experience for all families that want to try one of the most popular foods in Madrid and learn some history of Spain.

In terms of logistics, she is pretty centrally located, less than a 5 minute walk from Gran Via.

Pepi really knows her stuff! Lively, hands-on, home-style paella, Spanish tortilla and sangria, prepared collectively in the intimate setting of her lovely home. Great way to enhance your experience in Madrid!

Thank you Paloma. We had a great time in your cooking class although it was more of a spanish cultural experience. We learnt much more about Spain and your food culture than we could have anywhere else. And thank you for sharing your home with us. It was very special. For travellers reading this review, do it! It is worth every cent. The duration is perfect as we had our 4 year old daughter with us and she was able to enjoy the experience as well. Important tip, don't eat a big breakfast.

I had never taken a class before, and I'm so glad I did. I went with my teenage son, and father in-law, and we had a great time learning how to make the dishes. Our group was really friendly, and we enjoyed getting to know Paloma and the others as we cooked. Paloma is a very gracious hostess, and made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. She shared her knowledge of cooking as well as the culture, and we went home with the recipes for each dish. Would highly recommend for anyone who likes cooking and eating!

My wife, daughter and I absolutely loved learning, cooking, drinking, eating and having fun with Paloma and the 4 other travelers in our class. Paloma is so friendly and passionate about teaching how to make Paella, Tortilla, Sangria, as well as the history and stories about Spanish food and culture, that it is impossible not to have fun! The experience is like visiting at a friend or family members house in Madrid and joining together to cook, drink, talk and share a fantastic meal. Now we are looking forward to hosting our family and friends and enjoying it all again. We highly recommend this fun and delicious experience!
