We booked a train ride a month in advance, the last train to Valencia on that day, the next one was the next morning.
We arrived by plane and we were new in town, so it took us some time to figure out how to get to the railway station. We were running late and were in a hurry to cath the train. The acces from the metro to line 15, where our train was, is extremely difficut and hard to understand. When we finally dicovered where line 15 was, we started running to catch the train, but the railway station staff stopped us and made us take a longer route where security check was performed on our luggage and they made us take our jackets off. They placed everything on a scan device and then gave us back our luggage, but no jackets, and told us to run to catch the train. I, of course, asked to take our jackets back and they acted like they didn't knew what I was talking about. I had to jump in the scan machine and get our jackets myself, because they were not comming out, because they put them inside the machine without a tray, they had put them directly on the machine line. Needless to say, I arrived on line 15 only to see my train leaving.
We had to book a night at the railstation hotel, and pay 100 euro/night, because there were no trains leaving at night from Madrid to Valencia, only the next morning.
I don't understand how it is legal for random railway employees (not policemen) to check your luggage in a train station, for no rational reason, and to stop you from reaching your train for which you already paid. Who gave them that authority? Why there were security checks only on that train line and not on any other line? I don't know. All I know is that they didn't even knew how to use the scan machine, they didn't use a tray for Gods sake!!!

We took the high speed bullet train REnfe (ave) to Valencia. Less than 2 hours from Madrid, ran on time! When you walk in the train station go to the right. Go through the scanners for baggage etc. Then look at the board for your train and it will let youj know what gate/platform your train is in. Go down escalators and then they scan your boarding pass, walk to your coach and all set. Smooth easy fast! Great way to see the middle of spain on the way to the coast. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Estacion de Chamartin is the "second" station of Madrid after Atocha. It's located well off the tourist circuit, but is the station used for Segovia and the international trains such as to Lisbon. I've used the station for both. The facilities are not on par with Atocha, but then it's not as import either. Regardless, there's plenty of useful shops while waiting for the train. The station is fairly easy to navigate, and information for departures as about as straight-forward as can be with both English and Spanish used for the information boards.
The last tie I used the station was for the sleep train to Lisbon. No problem getting on board and finding my berth. I've used sleeper trains, but can't remember the last time that I've had one quite as bumpy as this one. I kept being woken up every time the train braked.
The station is bright, modern and useful, so can't ask for any more than that.

The Chamartin Station facilities are excellent , and the whole thing is crisp, modern and new; also connecting well with various underground lines. We could connect well from Tribunal Station near the city centre. The Renfe Office is not as friendly and helpful as the Renfe Atocha StationOffice. Maybe Management needs to run more customer service training for employees, but we got to Segovia easily enough in the end.

We arrived for our trip to Segovia and showed our electronic tickets as we had done previously and we're rejected from the line. We needed paper tickets. We were informed of the general direction we needed to head and we raced to where these could be obtained. The office was well hidden for further torment. The office people were delightful and very apologetic for such an unreasonable and concealed requirement. We raced back and caught our train thankful we always arrive a bit early to train stations.

Chamartin station is much smaller than its cousin Atocha. It's not as pretty either, but if you're looking to use it as a station, it's well organized and easy to get around, plus there are no secrets about where entrances are compared to Atocha. Unlike the humongous Atocha, at Chamartin it's easy to get help if you have a question or problem.
Just be careful that if you come here for a train, it's the right station and you don't want to go to Atocha.
As far as sight seeing goes, this isn't a place worth visiting.

We kept our luggage at the left luggage facility (5.20 Euro for a large locker, 3.60 Euro for a medium and 3.10 Euro for a small - for 24hrs or less) at Chamartin before leaving for a day trip to Segovia. Upon arriving back at the station in the evening at around 8.30pm, we looked around for a decent place to eat but were disappointed at the limited options. It's either fast food (Burger King), a sandwich bar (also limited food options) or buying a sandwich from the convenience store. Before we could decide, the convenience store which sold sandwiches closed (this was around 9pm or so). We ended up eating Burger King, which was crowded - I guess others felt the same way about the limited food choices available. Our overnight train to Barcelona was only at 10.30pm, so it would have helped if the shops stayed open a little longer.
My advice to travellers taking the night trains would be to eat in the city before arriving at the station, unless you're hankering for fast food or cold sandwiches. A plus point, however, is that the left luggage facility is well lit, air conditioned and seemingly secure - you have to put your luggage through a scanner before they will allow you to leave them in a locker, and there is also a security guard on duty.

We arrived in Madrid at Chamartin. As with most major stations in large cities, the station is large and hectic. We had to stand in a fairly ling line in order to ask which line was the correct line for my question. But we did so and it was worth while.
A travel tip. Chamartin is quite a way from the city center and an expensive taxi ride. Long distance train tickets will have "Combinacion" or something like that printed in the left upper corner. (Sorry, I don't have my ticket so can't be sure if that is the correct word.) If you take your ticket to the proper window (you will have to ask--it was the left-most window when I was there) they will give you free tickets to take the local train to Atocha, or you can get off at any Metro stop along the way. It was hassle free and I am sure it was faster than a taxi would have been.

I just had to dash thru to get on an an Avant to Segovia - it was smoother and easier to find than Atoche Renfe which was a shocker! Prepare yourself for luggage scanning - a reminder of the Atocha tragedy

My husband and I will be arriving at Atocha station, Madrid at 11:15 am. We would like to take a day trip to Segovia and understand trains leave from Chamartin station. We will need to get there from Atocha and also store our luggage. What is the quickest least expensive way to get to Chamartin and how much time should we allow.
Written 16 July 2018
There is inexpensive luggage storage right at Atocha. Line 1 of the metro will take you straight to Chamartín.
