Neighbourhood: La Latina
La Latina is a charming neighbourhood with two unique personalities. At first glance, it’s distinctly old-world, with narrow streets weaving a maze among charming stone buildings in sunny, bright colors like yellow and pink. The other side of La Latina is characterized by a young population and a bohemian vibe, as evidenced by a dynamic and evolving selection of new bars, shops, coworking spaces, and other businesses popping up in the area. In the northern part of the neighbourhood, the Cava Alta and Cava Baja streets constitute the tapas center of Madrid, where each age-old restaurant serves up distinctive specialties like huevos rotos and patatas bravas. Locals have come here for generations to while away hours over drinks and tapas with friends. On Sundays and public holidays, the streets to the south of La Latina metro station transform into a giant open-air market full of locals sifting through tent after tent of art, apparel, and antiques. Any day of the week, the intriguing blend of the traditional and the hip make the streets of La Latina worth exploring.

This inviting church is located near Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace. The exterior exudes a very historical appearance. Unfortuately, when we visited, we walked around the entire exterior and couldn't find any open door. Seeing photos of the interior baroque decor, we were disappointed not to gain access.

We wandered into this beautiful cathedral as we began our day long walking tour of central Madrid. It was amazing inside and loved the contrast to the Madrid Cathedral which was our next stop. Worth a visit!

This is a quiet, understated church
The beauty doesn't jump out at you. You have to take a moment to sit and appreciate it. A statue of Saint Barbara is here that is magnificent. She is the patron Saint of Air Defense Artillery. As a member of the order of Saint Barbara, I was happy to see this.

Classical baroque Cathedral, right near the royal palace. Every European country has one of these, and this one is well preserved and an active church today.

I was mostly attracted by the 17th century Baroque exterior of this church while walking up to the Royal Palace along the Calle Mayor. Not too special inside but is worth a short stop. The church has been designated to be the Military Cathedral of Spain.

This is just a church, but it has a nice architecture, it is well preserved and it seems to be real quiet place for such a central cathedral. If you really are into churches and want to visit, pay attention - it might be closed from 1 or 2 to 6 in the afternoon.

I noticed this relatively small church standing on a nearby parallel street when walking down Calle Mayor. As I was heading to Madrid's cathedral, I was a bit confused when I saw Cathedral on the granite facade as part of the name and went to investigate. The church had a Renaissance exterior style with square-cornered windows, no towers and a tiny bell at the top. But ornate Baroque greeted me when I stepped inside. A mass was under way, so I decided to come back later after exploring other nearby sights, including the royal palace.
When I returned, no one else was inside. I sat for a while, enjoying the cool relief from the hot summer day and the quiet atmosphere after being carried along by a huge wave of visitors to the city during my explorations. This spot is definitely off the beaten tourist track, but it offered much to me, as a history buff.
Started in 1615 and completed in 1744, the Roman Catholic church used to be a place for nuns to pray in an old convent complex. It is the only convent structure that has survived until today. Acquired by the Ministry of Defense in 1980, the church now serves as the military cathedral of Spain and the seat of the military archbishop and is thus also known as the Cathedral Church of the Armed Forces.

The Cathedral Church of the Armed Forces, also known as Archbishop Castrense Church and Church of Sacramento is a Catholic church tucked away on Sacramento Street near the Royal Palace adjacent to the Palace of the Councils. It was designed in the form of a Latin cross in 1615 but wasn't completed until 1744. It is all that remains of the monastery of Bernardine and was acquired by the Ministry of Defense in 1980 to be the seat of the Archbishop Castrense. Peaceful spot well worth a visit.

Because it isn’t on the main street, most visitor –including me – only accidentally find on this peaceful street this pretty little church, the Church of Sacramento aka Iglesia Catedral Castrense
The interior is very average, and I really can’t explain what it was that attracted me to have a closer look and take photos of this XVII century baroque Cathedral.
Perhaps because of disappointment caused by Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, it was refreshing to see this much smaller and modest military church.

This is a very underrated attraction to the sites of Madrid. After being underwhelmed by the main cathedral, this small church, the military church, is a truly wonderful find, with a feeling of peace about it that inspires you to sit down and reflect for a few minutes. Well worth the detour, and unlike many churches, a haven of peace with few tourists.
