Top ways to experience Casa Museo Lope de Vega
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

Having read many of Lope's plays we really wanted to visit his house. Unfortunately we didn't plan it well in advance and even though it was a weekday off-season they had a long list of reservations (they didn't pick up phone). Trying to join a tour on the spot (in case someone canceled) didn't work and the staff was more police-like rather than welcoming. So we only saw the orange garden which is, well , an orange garden with a view on a brick wall, nothing special about it.

Very interesting indeed, it was worth it, this time we managed to visit the home of the very famous Spanish writer/playwright.
In about an hour a friendly and very knowledgeable Santiago (that's what I think is his name) showed us every single corner of the ancient building (all original, even the furnishings), telling us about the life of Lope de Vega and in some ways the history of Spain at the time.
Really money well spent (very little, anyway)!

The visit to the house is free and guided, you need a prior reservation, we called by phone and there was no problem, they were very friendly and gave us an appointment on the day and time we wanted. Our guide Santiago explained everything to us very well, it is clear that he knows a lot and that he loves his job, a 10 for him.
We loved the house and the stories that Santiago told us were very interesting!!! I recommend the visit!!!

Exceptional guided tour (free, but you have to reserve) Recommended for everyone and, especially, for theater people. Behind a rather modest façade is this "hidden treasure" where you will visit a rigorous reconstruction of the apartments of the Fénix de los Ingenios. Bravo for our guide which unfortunately I don't remember the name of.
It is not without its spark that Lope's house is located on Cervantes Street when Lope de Vega Street is the parallel one and Cervantes' alleged grave is located there.

Amazing experience! Check online so you don´t miss it out. Free admittance but you come out ith valuable information of the times and advantures of prolific playriter Lope de Vega. I wish you can have as a guide Mrs Gemma, very educational, learned on the matter and with lots of jab-dropping anecdotes to share! A visit worth repeating!

Absolutely recommended. The guide for our visit was Gema. The passion and knowledge that it transmits is something that can only be explained by living it. I had previously visited the house-museum, without a guide, years ago, and the difference is abysmal. It's not just that it explains every detail of the house (which is very well preserved), it's that it spreads a passion for history. The visit passes through the garden and several rooms of the residence, where you can see objects from the period commented pertinently (35 - 45 minutes of visit). I will definitely repeat the visit, for the pure pleasure of enjoying it again.

How the other half lived a couple of centuries ago. Fascinating tour of this intimate museum, home of Lope de Vega. A law that influenced the style of architecture billeted officers with families in Madrid for life if they had a top floor. Those with the space had a lodger. Those who managed to disguise the fact from the street escaped.

Walking through that unique part of the capital, we discovered this house-museum. Where to find out where López de Vega developed his life. The visit, very well organized by a professional, allows you to see the room where the Prince of Wits lived and admire a unique place in that unique neighborhood.

Loved this place. We booked a tour of the house which is well worth seeing. Only 35 minutes and very informative. Great to see a building set out as it would have been in 1610, so interesting. Our guide Gema was excellent. Well worth a visit but definitely book or you cannot do the tour.

My husband & I enjoyed our visit to this historic home very much. In learning about the life of the playwright and his family we also learned much about life in Madrid in the early 1600s. The gardens and home itself provided a view into that time frame. Unfortunately, none of the material we read ahead of time provided the information that reservations were required to be made in advance. While the tickets are free you must make arrangements ahead of time and specify an English language tour. Also, one of the staff members simply sent us away when we arrived "without a ticket." As we were leaving we encountered another staff member who told us there were tickets available for an English speaking tour later in the day. We accepted the tickets and came back later. It was worth re-arranging our schedule to accommodate the second visit. Our impression was that the first staff member did not want to deal with our intermediate Spanish language skills in explaining the schedule. Our impression was they prefer arrangements to be made a day or two before the planned visit. Definitely inquire ahead of time or plan to make two visits... one for tickets and one for the tour. There are stairs and no elevators and no public restroom at our time of visit.
