The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Paseo del Prado
The area around the elegant Paseo del Prado boulevard is much-visited by both locals and tourists. The world-famous Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums form a triangle of art and culture that spans this grand and beautiful avenue. On weekdays, the Prado Museum opens its doors for free after-work hours, drawing a diverse and excited queue of art lovers that wraps around the block. Palacio de Cibeles and Círculo de Bellas Artes cultural centers are other artsy hangouts to check out, with rooftop bars that provide impressive views of the city. While the Paseo del Prado and its roundabouts form a busy throughway in Madrid, a broad green pedestrian park in the middle is a calm and gorgeous place for a relaxing stroll. Just east of the museums, the Retiro Park is always a confluence of activity as families and friends of all ages take to the pretty paths and lawns to stretch their legs or to have a picnic.

    Found my sea legs
Out on the high seas wouldn’t be my strong point, but this museum (which is very close to the Prado) effortlessly took me there in a very informative and interesting way. Set against the backdrop of Spain’s unique history, which I never bore of, the exhibits, players and explanations illuminated so many historical aspects I wasn’t aware of. Very much geared towards adults, allow around 2 hours visiting time…also, photography is freely allowed.

A hidden gem for naval enthusiasts
The museum isn’t one of the main ones tourists visit. While free to enter, a 3€ voluntary donation is suggested. It was well worth it. We probably spent an hour in the museum looking mainly at the scale model ships that abound. The museum was larger than I thought it would be.

Amazing museum for those interesting in naval history.
Great museum in the centre of Madrid. Was a rainy day so was quite busy but no where near as busy as some of the other museums. Was a few items that seem to not be displayed anymore, and the Floor unfortunately is very squeaky — but other than that was an amazing experience. It is also free although they do ask for a voluntary €3, which is 100% worth it.

Very interesting naval museum that is open despite the disclaimer on Trip Advisor to the contrary.
My wife and I spent an hour or so browsing through the many rooms of ship models, paintings and other artifacts used to tell the history of the Spanish navy . The museum is excellent and at 3 euros it is a bargain. If you like naval history , this museum is well worth a visit. The Trip Advisor website says it is “Temporarily Closed “. But as of November 8,2023 this is incorrect.

Very interesting Naval Museum. Worth a visit
Very well organized museum located in the Naval Building. Cost 3 euros. Since it is located in a military building you and your bags go through metal detectors. More model ships than you can image. Lots of interesting exhibits and naval related artifacts. Explanations in Spanish and English. Could easily spend 2-3 hours here if you read all of the exhibits information.

    Decent sized collection
Although admission is free, a 3€ donation is payable upon entry. This museum displays a wealth of Spain’s naval history with some impressive displays. All worth the price. Staff helpful and there is a gift shop to check out if you should desire.

Spanish naval museum tells the long story of Spanish naval highs and lows through an extensive collection
This museum was a surprise. It is in a convenient location near the Prado. It is larger than expected and contains many paintings of famous Spanish naval leaders and many models of Spanish naval ships. The museum covers Spanish naval history from the time before and during the Armada through today's modern Spanish navy. It tells an honest story of the highs and lows of Spanish naval history. It is worth a visit.

Hidden Gem in a Sea of Museums
If you like this sort of thing you will be reading this review. This museum for 3 euros is a hidden gem. Of course it spells out how great Spanish Naval History was, that’s a given, but it tells much more about world discovery and the rise and fall of a great naval power. Lots of School trips when we were there but that’s a sign of how good it is. One floor of exhibits, well displayed and a couple of hours well spent.

Quite an extensive museum with a wealth of exhibits and with the added bonus it offers “free admission” (donation of Eur 3 suggested). Even so there are some amazing “gaps” in the history, notably any comments/displays relating to the Great Armada in 1588 - and amazingly the security guards did not seem to know anything about it… The hugely important battle of Lepanto (1572) was only covered with a huge painting but with a notable lack of comments relating to the geo-political situation at the time. There are lots of models of ships but no comments relating to the development of ship building techniques eg the evolvement of double hull etc, It would have been interesting to learn about techniques to deal with leaking hulls in the past… Overall, despite leaving many question marks the museum is worth a visit!

Nice museum with a well organized display of ships. The museum is in a good location. The museum was free, but as I was walking in, the front desk lady was rude and demanded a donation of €3 euros.
Since it was cold and rainy and I needed to use the restroom, I paid the "donation" amount.
Other than this incident, it was a nice visit, and I learned a lot. Be careful what you have on yourself since there's a lot of security and you have to clear the scanner for ingress.

A short walk from the Prado, this national museum provides an extensive collection of replica models (award winning), portraits, and naval architecture to tell the story of Spain's naval history and evolution. For a military buff, or a historian, this is a treasure house. If you have familiarity with Spain's history, you can find it well worth you time. We did not need to show our passports at the desk. Highly recommend.

The Naval Museum is close to the Prado and is a short walk away from Banco de Espana metro station.

I visited soon after opening time on a Tuesday morning and followed the designated route through a series of exhibits dating from the 15th century to the current day.

There were many models of various vessels from the past, as well as some interesting art.

Spain’s naval battles with the Netherlands and Britain were well documented and also the part Spain plays as a member of the EU and NATO in current maritime affairs.

Admission is free.

This is an amazing museum in the Prado Avenue, Madrid. It is dedicated to the navy and air forces. The museum is a jewel, it shows the main historical events: From the Conquest of America, the Lepanto battle, the Trafalgar war, the war of 1898... I love all the ships, naves, paintings, flags, and maps from allan these wars.

It's a hidden gem of a museum for all naval buffs.

Situated close to the Prado Museum, this museum was very well organised with model replicas of ships, originals, paintings and arranged in chronological order till modern day Spanish navy.

There is an audio guide available through an app on your phone once you connect to the museum wifi.

An excellent museum to understand the evolution of technology with relation to the navy including navigation and armament.

You need to keep at least 2-3 hours to walk around the entire museum. This museum is better suited for older kids.

Could have been made more interesting with simulators for navigation, helicopter, submarines and armament to attract children and adults too.

There is a small museum shop for souvenirs, although it was difficult to find books in English about the museum.

We have visited Madrid for a few days now and visited many museums. Despite the interest in art for the Museo del Prado, I am more interested in the naval force of Spain. It was a great journey through the many rooms which included ships from old Spain and modern submarines and destroyers. I will definitely visit the attraction again.
