The area
Neighbourhood: Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

we had been recommended to Casa Alberto by a friend who is from Madrid and we booked ahead of time and were glad we did. The bar and restaurant are small but extremely atmospheric and very busy. We ate at the restaurant at the back and it was intimate and old fashioned but it felt like the real Madrid and was a good mixture of locals and tourists. The menu is not extensive but the four of us all chose easily and throughly enjoyed our dishes. There are a few "off piste" items such as tripe and lambs toes for main course which can be avoided for those of us who have tasted such "delicacies" before. The main courses are as is typical in Spain, short on vegetables, but were delicious and well sized. The main attraction for us was the atmosphere and the innovative menu which made a refreshing change from so many of the other "formulaic" eateries. Go and taste a little bit of history.

A very nice tapas bar with excellent service. The tapas were quite interesting and maybe not what we had expected but made it so more fun to taste.
The interior was also so genuine which made our evening so nice.
I do recommend to come here.

Casa Alberto for tapas and a drink is almost a must when visiting Madrid. Founded in 1827 it is one of the very old taberna's in the lively city, and it is always crowded. The tapas they served are all the typical ones.
The place has atmosphere and spirit.

Amongst all the touristic places you can find in Madrid, Casa Alberto is definetively one of the best one for the Huertas area. It is a bit pricy and perhaps it is not easy find a comfortable place where to sit down - but give his a shot to try the meat cooked on the stone!

The food was OK but the waiter Álvaro was completely impolite. In his view we did not spend enough money. He was actually making fun of us. What he did not know, however, was that we already dined somewhere else and just wanted to taste one tapa to decide whether we would come back for dinner the next day. No need to say that we did not went back...

Overpriced tapas, unfriendly service, but good vino. If you want something typical Spanish, don’t come here.

Traditional bar with restaurant seating in the back. Funny and adorable staff, solicitous but informal with good English as needed. Oh, the melon gazpacho was amazing and the rest of our choices were delicious, including pinxtos, salad and meat. Dessert was enough to share. The price is inexpensive, and I rate it higher than some summaries. My husband left his cap, they apparently looked for us on a busy street, and joked when we retrieved it the following day. We have gone back and will again

My wife and I arrived this morning in Madrid, where she had attended Madrid University in her junior year at Rider College. We had a wonderful day acquainting ourselves with the city and chose Casa Alberto as the place to have our first dinner. We were very happy we did. The atmosphere was wonderful, enhanced by every table being filled. The service was good, even though my Spanish is not. My wife ablely assisted in choosing and then communicating our choices. The tapas were great and we avoided some of the more exotic, at least to us, choices for the main meal. I went with a cod fish dish and my wife chose a duck entre. We had house wines, and were pleased. Finished the meal with cheese cake and cafe. All together a very nice meal in a wonderful, beautiful and historic restaurant. For two the total bill came to $74 Euros.

We walked in at about 8pm on a Friday, and we chose to sit in the back (the front is tapas, the back is the "restaurant"). I read that the staff was rude, however, we found them to be very professional and patient. They're not chatty because they are quite busy. The meal lasted about 2 hours, but this Spain, do you need to slow down and relax.

I had very good dry, white wine (my husband enjoyed the Rioja). They brought fish & crime croquette to try. We ordered the mushroom and Gorgonzola starter (very tasty). For main course, my husband had little lamb shanks (a bit gristly, but great flavor), and I ordered the ox tail stew, which was very one-note and sauce seemed too thick & glossy (?cornstarch).

Desserts are sublime. I had a nueces cake made with nuts (not a flour cake, but cold & moist), served with ice cream. Very different; not what I expected, but really tasty. My husband ordered the chocolate coulant (dark chocolate volcano cake)....wow wow wow. He enjoyed this.

Cafe con leche to end. 😄

The bill was 85 euro. I think it was an appropriate amount for the meal. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I would like to go back and order the fish topped with shrimp (this looked delicious).

Excellent traditional food at the bar or restaurant. Many choices and nice and friendly ambiance. Visited by locals while in the heart of the touristic area... Try the croquetas de calamares in so tinta....
