Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you like Goya, or even Spanish art in general, seeing this little church off the beaten track will be an enjoyable experience. Its ceiling is covered with a lovely series of frescos by Goya on the life of St Anthony, showing many of the realistic touches and everyday faces which were the painter's trademark. Goya is also buried in the church, right underneath his own frescos.
If, however, you are not particularly a Goya fan, or prefer razzle-dazzle in your art, you might not find a visit here particularly fulfilling. The frescos are lovely, but not something so spectacular I would make a special trip to come see (again). My advice would be to visit only if you are in the area, since the church is free to enter anyway. Or to combine a trip here with a visit to the Museo Cerralbo on the other side of the park and the Templo of Debod in between, which would make for a much more interesting sightseeing experience.
One tip for Goya fans: look for the Cemeterio de la Florida a short distance behind the church, on the left side of the road going up the hill. This is the cemetery where most of the people depicted in Goya's famous 'Third of May' painting are buried.

A small unremarkable church on the outside. Inside beautiful frescoes done by Goya. Goya is also buried here. A twin church next door was built for worship leaving the original just for the enjoyment of the paintings

Below the Royal Palace you will find the Ermita, a slightly long walk, but nice sidewalks and steps lead access to this area. Worth a visit to see the Goya ceilings and his final resting place. I recommend a short cab ride to the Ermita to make it easier to find the first time, then an easier walk back to the Don Quijote statue and Rpyal Palace area. Pass a great looking old bar before you come to the Ermita.

It's a tiny little church but the ceiling has some beautiful frescos. But that's it. You sit there and look at the ceiling and 5 minutes later, you're done. There was a video playing in a side room but it was all in Spanish. When you go there, it looks closed because the big main doors in the front don't open. You walk in a little door next to it, which also looks closed but just pull it open. It is free. I wouldn't specifically go out of the way to see it but it's not a far walk from the Palace. I went there, walked to the Templo de Debod then the Palace, Cathedral, Plaza Oriente, etc.

We stayed in the Puerta del Sol area of Madrid, but decided with all the wonderful reviews to make the trek out to the Hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida for a visit. While this is a special place as Goya's resting place and the frescoes were breathtaking, I wish I hadn't made a special trip. If I was to do this over I would only visit if I had something else to do in the area and not have made the special trip.

I read the reviews on the hermitage and decided I had to find this place and make the visit. Well it is average, very average so I can't understand all the fuss. I know it is EL Grecos resting place and for that reason it is very special, but as far as anything else, I can't say I was impressed. I would not discourage anyone from going but perhaps I was expecting this place to have a lovely peaceful garden and feel about it - but it's on a busy main road, the building needs repair and inside the chapel everything looks like it needs restoration.

Goya painted an amazing group of frescoes on the life of St. Anthony in the little hermitage (ermita), and Goya himself is also buried there. There is a church next door. I went there on the advice of someone who has been to Madrid many times, and I believe that everything is recently restored. There are mirrors placed around so that you can better see the ceiling details.
If you don't take a taxi, the best way to get there is to take the metro to Principe Pio. When you get off, turn right and keep walking down the Paseo de la Florida for several blocks, and the Hermitage is on the right. Next door is a restaurant called Casa Mingo which specializes in sidra and grilled chicken. I asked a few people on the street for the location of the Ermita, and no one could help me, but when I mentioned Casa Mingo, that did the trick! Also, the visit to the Ermita is Free!! When I finished, I ended up at Casa Mingo for lunch. Check the hours before you go. I think the Ermita is open from 9:30am to 8pm from Tuesday through Friday, and only from 10am until 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Even though this was a church, it's no longer used as a church, and it is CLOSED on Mondays. So I went twice. Very glad I did! One thing people have not mentioned, I think, is how very different these light, beautiful angels and putti are from Goya's famous "Black Paintings," which you can see in the Prado. These are delightful. They made me smile! Also, no need to take a taxi. You can get the "R" train at Opera, or take the red Metro line to Opera and change to "R," go to Príncipe Pío, and it's only about a 10-minute walk on a wide street lined with restaurants. Another tip: You can walk from here to the Temple of Debod - if you don't mind walking uphill. First you cross the railway tracks on an ugly metal bridge, but after that you're walking in beautiful green parks.

You have to visit this to improve your understanding of Goya's work. It is worth a visit and it's for free! You can also take the opportunity to walk along the river just up to Principe Pio's station.
