This church once belonged to the former convent of San Hermenegildo, established in 1586 by Friar Nicolás de Jesús y María, which was known as the Carmen Descalzo Convent since it was home to members of said religious order.

The original building, whose church was built in 1605, was demolished in the early 18th century, and in 1730 Pedro de Ribera commissioned the construction of the contemporary building, which was completed in 1748 by José de Arredondo and Fausto Manso. The construction has a typical church layout designed following Madrid Baroque aesthetics: a Latin cross plan with a central nave and two lateral ones.
As it is situated in the central part of Madrid, it is always full of visitors, mainly tourists.

We went in to this church and it looked and felt dark and gloomy, but it is nevertheless a very nice church. Perhaps when the lights are one, one gets a different perspective. It is bigger than it appears from the exterior, and hard to see very well do to it being so dark inside. If you are in the vicinity, do stop in and have a look.

The architect Pedro de Ribera constructed the Church of San Jose between 1730 and 1742. The style of the church is Baroque and above the main door is a statue of the Virgen del Carmen by Robert Michel, done in 1750. The Latin cross plan was used for the church, with a central nave and lateral naves with chapels. The main altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen. One side chapel at the front of the church has a very beautiful altarpiece of San Jose, with a sculpture made by Luis Salvador Carmona in the 18th century.

Iglesia de San Jose (Church of San Jose) is located along Calle de Alcala at the junction with Gran Via. This is a Catholic church that is situated upon the grounds that once held a large Carmelite Convent.

The present day church was mostly constructed in the first half of the 18th century in Baroque style. The facade is attractive with its three arched entrance and statue figure of the Virgin of Carmen.

The interior of the Church of San Jose is enjoyable to see. I liked the Baroque style chapels and their nice artworks. The front alter is also quite decorative and well worth having a look. Note that It is a dimly lit so photography is a bit challenging inside the church.

Overall, we enjoyed stopped by Church of San Jose for a quick look around. It is a convenient attraction for those walking down Gran Via or along Calle de Alcala in Central Madrid.

The church is on Calle Alcala, one of the most busy streets in downtown Madrid. This little church is on this street and is quiet, with few visitors. There is a niche above the entrance door that has the image of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, which was created by the artist Roberto Michel, one of the artists who worked on the Cibeles Fountain. The church interior is Baroque and there is an important sculpture of the Crucified Christ by Alonso de Mena and a San Jose by Luis Salvador Carmona.

Walking around the back streets of the Justica district of Madrid I chanced upon this church ,viewed it before ,it impressed me then and it still does.
A wonderful looking church ,a great example of Baroque architecture that's so pleasing on the eye ,the facade is fabulous but I loved the views of the towers that show the real age of the church ,such an evocative looking church ,very photogenic ,it's easy to locate along Calle De Alcala and well worth checking out if you're in the area.

We happened to find this beautiful Baroque church completely by accident. The exterior does not look like much but the interior is well worth a stop.

The altars and statuary are very well done. The dome and fresco work is tremendous. Very touching!

We came across the Church of San Jose whilst walking by and heading to another site. At the time it was closed so we could not go inside and the outside was covered up for renovations! It's a historic church and its origins gos as far back as the 16th century. The church was built, rebuilt and reconstructed a few times and it seems it still is! It's meant to be really lovely inside and it is worth a visit when possible.

In a city with so many beautiful churches deciding which one to visit can be hard but as we were staying not to far from Gran Via this church was one that we chanced upon as we were bimbling around this part of town.
This truelly is one beautiful church built in the Baroque style of architecture and looks amazing.
My twin brother Stephen and I were walking down the fantastic Calle Alcala when we decided to check out this church.
The facade of this 18th century church looks really good while the interior is amazing, beautiful statues and great details and frescoes and a tranquil light and airy interior makes this a stunning church to visit.
There seems to be reconstruction work being carried out on the facade so visiting the interior may be off limits for a while but check the exterior out and the beautiful location.
Church Of San Jose is really easy to locate on Calle Alcala in the Chueca neighbourhood.
A fantastic old church and one I highly recommend you visit if your in the area.
