About
The Royal College Seminary of Corpus Christi, known as the Patriarch, is an institution founded in 1583 which had as its main mission to train priests according to the spirit and provisions of the Council of Trent, as stated the founder himself in San Juan de Ribera their constitutions, becoming the paradigm of the Counter-Reformation in Valencia. It was declared a National Monument in 1962. In addition to the relevance of their church decorated with fresco paintings by Matarana or its cloister, one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture with columns made of Carrara marble, among the works of art-historical importance that are preserved in our Museum highlights paintings by Caravaggio, El Greco, Van Der Weyden, Benlliure or Pinazo Ribalta and others, as well as the original manuscript of the posthumous work of Sir Thomas More, martyr British chancellor of the church, written during his imprisonment in the Tower London before his execution that took place on July 6, 1535. This valuable manuscript, called 'Instructions and Prayers' or 'Tristia Christi (The Agony of Christ)', which can be considered a true spiritual testament, was saved by his daughter Margaret, who did reach Spain with the help of Emperor Charles V.

This church has a stunning interior. The exterior is humble and plain, but once you set foot in it… wow!!! A feast to the eyes. The chapels are very pretty and the frescoes are impressive. I see some reviews for the museum here, but this page is for the church only and not the museum. While entry to the church is free of charge, the museum has a €5.00 entry fee, and entry is one door down for the museum. You cannot enter the museum from here or enter this church from the museum. Two different sites with two different entry points and entry fees. Make sure you check opening times for this church before you visit, as they request tourist visitors to not visit during services.

They had recommended us to visit this church and its museum but they had not told us anything else. On Friday we found that it would open after mass so we decided to go in and follow the worship. The surprise was great because the mass was performed in Latin and at the end the miserere prayer took place. I had never attended this religious tradition (if I had read about it) but it surprised me even more because as part of it the painting of the Last Supper descends from the main altar, revealing an interior room that is covered by purple curtains. When they move away you discover a crucified Christ. All of this unique scenery is linked to the Latin litany and the emission of a large amount of incense, giving rise to an aura of mystery.

If you visit Valencia on a Friday be sure to see the miserere at El Patriarca.

There is a very small museum attached to this site. We were the only ones there so you can really see up close the paintings in this collection. There is a courtyard to spend a few minutes. The real star of this site is the chapel, the walls have huge tapestries and the alter is beautiful.

With abundance of frescos and tapestries it is a stunning place of worship.

As the church of the Patriarch’s College it is undoubtedly fitting given all the seminarians that have passed through its halls down the centuries.

A lovely high altar decorated with colourful holy images is under a superb barrel vaulted ceiling that is festooned with biblical accounts.

This place is on the calle de la Nave, near the placa Patriarca. It is an old cloister/house/ seminarium founded by Juan Ribera, not the painter. You can see a museum here with not many but some very beautiful and interesting works; some from El Greco, some from Caravaggio. Take your time here and enjoy. . Do not forget to visit the chapel beside it and in same building for same price. With two walls with magnificent old Flamish tapestries. and on the other side a small church, also very beautiful Do not forgetbeither to look at the crocodil and read the story about is. Fake nes or fantasy!!

Well worth the 8 Euro entrance fee.
This is a beautiful cathedral - not the biggest but the murals are superb.
Also climbed the tower - this is not for the unfit! 200+ steep steps. Well worth the climb for the views at the top. Try to time it so that you are at the top when the bell rings (on the hour)

The Church of the Patriarca has the beautiful Immaculate Conception Chapel. There is a very beautiful patio with the statue of St. Juan de Ribera and was made by Mariano Benlliure. The art gallery has very important paintings. I especially liked the paintings of Joan de Joanes. Crucifixion of St. Peter was painted by Caravaggio in the 17th century. The Adoration of the Shepherds was painted by El Greco in the 16th century. St. Francis and Fray Leon Pondering on Death was painted by El Greco in the 16th century.

Went on a guided tour, from the website this appeared to be the only option to visit, however the guide was engaging and informative and the tour was in English.
The museum holds paintings by Caravaggio & El Greco, manuscripts from Thomas More and many other beautiful artefacts. The building itself is stunning, the architecture, and in particular the frescos in the church and chapel together with the altarpieces.
Only complaint is the tour is not long enough; The tour lasted 1 hour, when we, quite rightly, needed to vacate the church due to a service beginning and our visit to the highlight of the building was curtailed. It would have been better if the tour had started 30 minutes earlier to allow us time to fully appreciate all of this wonderful church.

During our stay in Valencia, we trudged through many of the churches. No doubt this is the best. The walls are magnificant, the alter dominated by a picture of the Last Supper and the ceiling to rival anything Michelangelo might produce. Entry is free but be aware that it is a working church that only opens for mass so you need to enquire in the musuem next door when it is best to arrive. The museum is less inspiring but there is a Goya painting worth a look.
