Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful old part of town with lots of colourful houses, cafes and bars. Just back from the beach this area is well worth exploring. Very easy to get to from central Valencia on public transport (number 32 bus). Is also close to the port area.

We took a self guided walk around this area en route to the beach.
It’s a beautiful, historic neighbourhood with some classic examples of tiled houses and quaint streets. Once a working class area habituated by fishermen it looks like it is slowly being gentrified.

Right by the beach, this is one of the city's few areas which still retain some character. I think the area was traditionally a fishermen's area with small scale construction - two storey houses but now there are some concrete carbuncles dotted around as city planning in Valencia definitely favours new build. A lot of the houses have fantastic ceramic tiling and there are some beautifully decorated buildings some of which have been restored. A vibrant place which retains character and identity despite the fact that the local government has spent the last decade and more trying to demolish it because the city really needs more concrete blocks. Some nice bars around and a fantastic food market all the more impressive for not being a "tourist attraction". Some of the area is dowdy and down at heel - not helped by the fact that the area has suffered from chronic underinvestment for years as the policy was to let the area get so bad that demolition was the only answer - if a fraction of the cash spent on the Americas Cup installation (aka white elephant) had been spent here it would be fantastic - such a shame

Even if they will tell you don't go there it is not safe don't listen to them. It is place that must be seen. It has its specific ambience, so many lovely tenement houses. Some of them in very bad shape but still they have a charm. Next to the beach so you can pass by and take a look.

Stroll around the Cabanyal area for a feel for an authentic Spain which is becoming increasingly hard to find.
It is a place to admire the intricately tiled housefronts and interesting buildings on many of the parallel streets behind the Malvarosa beach, while taking in the character and soul of the area, which feels something like stepping back in time (or maybe to Havana or New Orleans?)
It would be nice to think that the area will remain unchanged for the next few decades, but I wouldn't count on it, and suggest you visit sooner rather than later
Don't miss out the local market either, towards the Southern end of the Barrio

Came here on a recommendation with a friend. I've never seen anything like this neighbourhood, and we came on a holiday so it was completely empty. Lots of old buildings and beautiful graffiti. There's also an article in The Guardian about it.

We were staying with friends who live about a 15-minute walk from the beach, and so strolled through this area often. The good side is that despite the poverty it seemed completely safe and there are some gorgeous historical buildings: the bad side is the poverty, abandoned buildings, etc., which is obviously not the fault of the people who live there who I would imagine have been abandoned by the rich of Valencia.

My hometown, now being reborn from its ashes...a must! One of the finest neighbourhoods in Valencia, by the sea, enjoy its beautiful architecture and atmosphere. Great places to eat and relax too!

Every time I come to Valencia I love to go for a walk in El Cabanyal. It is a place where you feel that the time has stopped, it used to be a fishermen village. It is true that the neighborhood got neglected in the past 20 years by the local gouvernement which is a shame but it seems that there are some efforts being done to repair it. It is quiet, with beautiful architecture of colorful tiled houses, close to the beach and some good local food.

This is a real area with real people engaging in real life. The small lanes lead to hidden squares with great cafes and tapas bars and locally shops. Life is here.
