Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We are a family of three from London, and following a recommendation from our hotel, we selected Silvio Scocuzza to serve as our guide to Matera. The experience was everything we had hoped for. Silvio’s English is impeccable, he possesses a wealth of knowledge on the history of the region and he was able to convey this clearly, with passion and in vivid detail. Furthermore, our guided tour throughout the town provided a clear picture of what life was like in Matera during its early years as well as some of its more recent developments. We highly recommend visiting Matera and encourage using Silvio as your guide.

We found Silvio from our google searches and had no regrets. He was a great guide - knowledgeable, accommodating and interactive. He showed us all the wonderful sights in Matera and beyond. We can tell that he is indeed very passionate about the region. He also brought us to excellent restaurants for lunch featuring local dishes at reasonable prices. It was indeed an unforgettable tour with him, and we won't hesitate to recommend him to others.

What a fantastic experience using Silvio for a half day small group tour around Matera and a full day private tour at the Gravina, Crypt of the Original Sin, and Pietrapertosa in the Lucanian Dolomites.
Silvio was quite knowledge, very accommodating of our specific needs and requests, and truly cared about us having the best experience. Of the many guides we had throughout southern Italy and Malta, my wife and I felt Silvio was the best by far.

Silvio is a fantastic tour guide. He is extremely knowledgeable and fun to be with. We learned so much about why Matera is so unique, and have a great appreciation for our the ingenuity of the people who lived there and built the city. Silvio explained what life was like for the resourceful and hard working people who lived there. We highly recommend Silvio as your Matera tour guide.

A private city tour with Silvio through Matera is a very special experience and a very, very good opportunity to learn a lot about the Sassi and of course about the city itself. We met at 5:30 p.m., an ideal time to experience the Sassi without many tourists and to see the Sassi particularly illuminated at nightfall. We visited a rock church and a Casa Grotta. Silvio is a very friendly tour guide who left no question unanswered. He loves his job and you can tell. We would be happy to do it again.

We did two tours with Silvio when we were in Italy, one of Matera and one of Alberobello. Silvio is a fantastic tour guide - we learned so much and also just had a great time exploring with him. The tours are such a great way to discover a new city and get to know all the history - I highly recommend booking a tour with Silvio if you have a chance :)

We had a fantastic tour of Matera with Silvio! The Sassi can be overwhelming to know which direction to turn and where to see the best views, however Silvio was very experienced and knew the area very well. Not only did we easily walk through the city, but we learned the very interesting history of the city and things we would just pass by without knowing. Silvio is also a fluent speaker in many languages and was very kind and fun to tour with! If you want the best experience, he is your tour guide!

I was in Matera with a group of friends. I never thought I would be fascinated by this city so 'particular, with a truly incredible story. But the visit would not have had the same effect if to guide our steps, under scorching temperatures, there had not been the preparation, professionalism and passion of Silvio who was able to reveal the most remote and suggestive corners of these places, seasoning them with particular and wise knowledge. Thank you.

So fortunate to have Silvio as our guide for a private 2 hour tour of the Sassi Caveoso in beautiful and fascinating Matera. Until the 1950s Matera was Italy’s ‘city of shame’, now it’s transformed and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Silvio is super knowledgeable on everything to do with Matera, the history, the culture, the community of this fascinating place. His tour included entry to a ‘typical’ cave dwelling and also to one of the oldest rock churches, both of which really helped build a much deeper understanding of the city. Overall, in fact, we felt it is almost essential to take this kind of tour to help you truly understand what you are looking at including all the glorious small details (like the animal bones used as building materials in a super sustainable way!).
Highly recommend Silvio and highly recommend Matera as a unique destination to explore!

Silvio was very kind and spoke perfect german. He recieved us punctually and showed our big group around Matera with the calamity of a real local guide. He didn‘t oversaturate our tour with too much details but showed us the most of this beautiful city. Would definitely recommend!

Is Matera Gravina the correct name for the canyon pre historic graves below Matera? Are these the Riparian graves? Can you bus there from the Taranto Matera bus station? Is there an alternative solution to see these grave caves? We only have an afternoon in Matera

Hi, please get in touch with me by email or use the contact form you find in my website Guide Around Matera and let me know in detail what you need and when you are coming to Matera, so that I can help you to arrange a tour with me or at least with a colleague of mine in case I am not available. There are some public buses from Taranto to Matera but I con't know the exact schedulings: try with Flixbus or make some researches in the web. From Matera city centre there are public buses connecting the city centre with the Park but only on saturdays and sundays; if you come during week days from monday to friday you will need a taxi to get to the park. Best Regards.
