Nice Duomo

Not the most spectacular Duomo in Italy, but nice to see in Matera. The area around it is very very nice.

Dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the designation of the Madonna Della Bruno was completed in 1270. This Romanesque- style building has been restored to its former glory. Our guide explained the exterior, commenting on the side doors, meanings of art along doorways. The interior was amazing, with fresco's , artwork, and painted ceilings in a Baroque style. Original altars... More

Beautiful example of Italian OTT cathedrals but with lovely little examples of deep religious roots. This is not a museum but a living church and the custodians were very firm with the chattering groups who arrived. The audio guide is clear and informative and cheap ..have one.

It is a very beautiful Cathedral and it is worth visiting once you are in Matera. A must go place for history lovers especially.

We have visited maybe 3 or 4 dozen Cathedrals, and this has one of the most beautiful interiors. Not too big (as cathedrals go), but the setting in a large piazza is outstanding. And the gold in the interior is spectacular. Little of it is original, but not sure why that matters. It's beautiful.

In the center of town off of a quiet square is the Duomo. It was nicely appointed with chapels that had lovely inlaid stone decorations.

Probably would not have stopped here had it not been for our guide. It is an incredible cathedral. Recently redone to it's former splendor with many interesting and ornate details. The side chapels are especially interesting. Commands a great view of both sides of the city.

We were fortunate to be at the Cathedral for the annual 2 July Festa Della Bruna so we saw the papier mache float circle the piazza three times then deliver the Saint to the cathedral. The next day we visited again to see her fully installed. At the time a music student was playing the organ (from an iPad score)... More

At one point, the interior of the cathedral must have been decorated from top to bottom with frescoes. At some stage the cathedral was extensively baroque'd, with all the trimmings. Fragments of the medieval art can be seen peeking through here and there. Interesting to contrast the splendor of the church with the wretchedness of the sassi dwellers downslope. Great... More

Work started on the Cathedral in 1230 and it was completed in 1270. The stone work dazzles on a sunny day, but not to be outdone, the interior is just as competitive. The campanile is 52 metres high, and pretty much visible all over the city.
