This impressive church and bell tower were built in the 13 Century on the highest point of the city. The west side is dominated by a rose window. The Baroque style interior was added in the 17th and 18th Centuries. The columns and ceiling are gilded stuccoes and beautiful artwork.

The 13th Romanesque cathedral Perching over Sasso Barisano and Caveosothis can not be overlook. It is one of landmark of Matera. Interesting interio, the main portal contains a statue of the Madonna della Bruna. Rose window showing a wheel of fortune, amazing ceiling and frescoes. In the morning time, quite busy time to enter, about 20 minutes to pay and get in. From Piazza Duomo or Bekveder della Cathedrale fantastic view and great spots to take pics of Matera.

The ticket includes the chapel , the museum and the cathedral. The chapel of Our Lady of Constantinople has a replica of the Madonna Della Bruna sculpture taken on parade, so it´s easy to take pictures (There´s another one in San Francesco).
In the Diocesan Museum are some silver chalices and reliquaries but the main attraction is the Cathedral itself. This 13C Romanesque building has gone many restorations.
Some parts of the original Byzantine Saint Eustace monastery are visible beneath the floor glass of the first chapel. The baroque decoration with gold leaf is impressive and the Assumption chapel is remarkable. Take a look at all the columns capitals, because they’re all different.
It´s a gem in the middle of a town so poor it was called "the shame of Italy" in the past century.

Built between 1230 and 1270 the Cathedral soars above the sassi with majestic elegance. A masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, its façade is dominated by a rose window with 16 rays. Inside the stunning Last Judgement is the only remaining piece attributed to Rinaldo de Taranto. There is also the 13th century fresco of Madonna della Bruna that you must see.
It is in the Civita quarter, close to the cave houses of nearby Casalnuovo and Vico Solitario, open to the public.
I spent a few minutes here in quiet reflection and felt a complete catharsis.

The Matera Cathedral standing atop the Barisano di Matera village dominates the panorama. It's a 13c Romanesque Cathedral with, as it seems, recently renovated facade.
While the exterior is pretty average, interiors are amazing - terrific Baroque marble, golden leaf and frescoes decorations. There's an entry fee which includes a small museum and a crypt.

This is a Romanesque style church from the 13th century. The façade maintains much of its Romanesque look, but the interior has undergone many renovations over the centuries.
It houses a Byzantine-style fresco depicting the Madonna della Bruna and Child, dating from 1270, the relics of Saint John of Matera, and a carved wooden choir with 60 stalls from 1453. There is a sculptural group of a Nativity scene from 1534. The Chapel of the Annunciation was created in the Renaissance-style. A 14th century fresco depicting the Last Judgment was uncovered during recent restoration work. The high altar has an altarpiece by Fabrizio Santafede depicting The Virgin with Saints.
Much of the interior received its Baroque-style decoration in the 17th and 18th century, including gilded stuccoes and frames.

This cathedral is located on the highest point of the town. We climbed up, but it’s worth. It was built in 13.century in Romanesque style. It’s an impressive building outside but the interior is more beautiful with amazing decorations, marble colums and frescos. Nowdays it’s a museum, the 3,50euros. Near the cathedral there are some good spots where the view is fantastic.

This cathedral is highlight decorated with lots of gold. There is a vantage from it over part of the city and it is free to enter and tour. Behind it is a church museum that isn’t worth the entrance fee.

To many churches to visit and comment on each one if you have time each one needs to be seen as they are all unique.

Intendo visitare la Certosa di Padula, ma il giorno sarà martedì, e il sito indica che il martedì è chiuso. Cosa si riesce a vedere in questo caso? Si può comunque entrare nella chiesa e nel chiostro e il giardino?
