You certainly don't have to be a history nerd to appreciate the beauty of this location, its an incredible site. This hillside ancient town takes you back in time and enables you to see and appreciate how people lived. When travelling into Matera town by car it was not easy to read all the signs and it certainly is difficult... More

Just got back from travelling in Matera, Italy 2 hours by train from Bari central train station 4.90 euros one way. Wonderful, fascinating place, it was like walking in an open air museum, highly recommended, cave dwellings where so amazing. Want to thank Matera City Tour for helping me get the panaramic views i desperately wanted from the other side... More

It is a very short tour because it is really a small town and the main point of interest is the Sassi. Although advertised as 90 minutes, about 30+ minutes of it consists of the guide making time for you to tour the Sassi by foot (while the guide stays in the bus). If you do your own research (google)... More

Matera is an amazing city with homes carved in stone, very good food and very nice people. Matera is a city and a province in the region of Basilicata, in Southern Italy. It is known also like "la Città Sotterranea" (the Subterranean City). The people lives (some of them) in houses carved in hills composed of calcareous rock. Some of them... More

This is a simply astounding city built into a cliff face. It is a World Heritage site and gives an amazing insight into how people lived in the caves in this ancient city. Another must is the 13th century cathedral. Built above a deep ravine it is well worth the effort of driving across the ravine and viewing the city... More

One of the most amazing places I have ever visited in Europe. There are still many empty caves that you can wander in and out of that were previously inhabited by families. Extraordinary reverberations when the Duomo bell chimes as the sound ricochets around the canyon walls !

The site of the "cave dwellings". You really need to have a guide who can explain the history of this fascinating city which went from "rags to riches" and then back to rags again. It is an extraordinary and emotional visit. And the roller coaster ride has continued ; the embarrassment of the people of Matera when their city was... More

Very interesting town to visit especially the old city which is gradually being brought back to life through carefull restoration. Fascinating to see how people lived so close to each other and how basic life was even 50 years ago before most people were forced to move out by the local government. The tour around the city does require quite... More

The "Sassi di Matera" (stones of Matera) are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. The Sassi are houses dug into the calcareous rock itself, and many houses are only caverns and the streets in some parts are located on the rooftops of other houses. In 1993 was given the World Heritage of UNESCO name. It... More
