It's an OK collection, mostly 18th century devotional paintings, but some modern stuff as well. If you like art at all there'll be something to like here. There is an English brochure if you like. And you can't complain when it's free!

Frustratingly, the two Antonellos were on tour (Matera until 19 Oct 2019) but I enjoyed the rest even if they weren’t of the highest quality. Entry is free so you can’t complain and the ladies on the desk seemed pleased to see me which is far from the case with many Italian state museums.

A good choice for those who are interested in art. Plenty of nice paintings, but unfortunately I could not appreciate as much as I should since I am not an art expert. Good to see for my students.

The new municipal gallery is housed on the first floor of the theatre building in a series of lovingly restored rooms. There is more or less on reason for the visit: the two small panels of Antonello da Messina, the single most important artist of the Renaissance in Southern Italy. The panels (St. Jerome Penitent and Abraham with the Angels) take pride of place at the entrance. And rightly so because they are exquisite, subtle and elegant little works of art. The other parts of the collection are only of local interest except perheps the Prodigal son by Mattia Preti.
