In June we set ourselves the goal of training in Amalfi for climbing and long hiking trails before a long trip through Siberia. This route was one of the first, so to speak, to warm up. It does not take much time, suitable even for beginners. There are many interesting abandoned buildings along the way, which I really like to explore.

This was a beautiful short out and back hike. From the Piazza in Amalfi and back it took us over an hour. We were in no hurry and stopped to enjoy some lemon cookies and strawberries that we’d purchased from local shops, at the picnic tables.

This is one of the iconic walks of the Amalfi coast and deservedly so. It starts in Amalfi town and follows the river to a series of mills and waterfalls inland. It can be done is a variety of ways, either up and back following the same route, or combined with other local walks such as the Valle delle Ferriere. Depending on which option you decide on, it can either be a half day walk or if combined with Ferriere, a full day walk (Ferriere is also meant to be a beautiful walk). The actual walk along through the town and to the waterfalls in quite easy, gradually heading up stream, but then becomes steeper if you decide to do the walk as a loop to Pontone and back to Amalfi. It is a beautiful walk, with lovely forests, cool under the canopy if you walk in summer, with the ruins of the mills along the stream. The section to Pontone is quite steep, but the bonus is the view back down to Amalfi, and the staircase which descends under the cliff to bring you back to Amalfi. This is a good way to escape the crowds on the coast and gives a different view of the whole area as it is quite deserted, except for holiday periods and on the weekends.
Make sure you have good directions or a map, as the way through Amalfi can be a bit confusing. Ask at the Information office on the main raid opposite the harbour, just along from the bus parking. Once out of town, there are no facilities, such as shops or toilets, so take a picnic lunch to have once you have passed the first lot of ruins.

We did this walk as part of an all day walk, but it can easily be done in a few hours. Stunning views over lemon groves, following the river up into the mountains, rewards you with the ruins of the paper mills dating back to 1100AD.
As you walk up the Main Street of Amalfi, you will hear the water rushing under the road. This is because it is the river, the road was built over the top. Keep following the road upwards. You will pass the paper museum on your left. It is worth popping in here for a look and do the quick tour to see how they made paper back in day.
Opposite the paper museum, on the other side of the road, you will see a staircase going up to the left! Follow this up, and keep going upwards, keeping the river on your left.
The path narrows and keeps going upwards, you will come to a lovely little organic cafe, nice place to stop for refreshments. Not far after this cafe, the path becomes unpaved and the the bush is more dense. You will start to see ruins in amongst the trees. Explore carefully as they are crumpling but very interesting. If you keep on up the path, more ruins, aqua ducts and waterfalls will be found. There are also lots of nice places for a picnic lunch.
The good news is it is downhill all the way back to Amalfi.
If you wish to go on to Pontone, there is a path that goes off to the right, when you get to the big arch’s and aqua-duct. Following this along until you come to 3 little stone huts, turn right here, the path becomes a lovely little mule path, that gently winds around the valley through more citrus groves. Keep following the signs and you will get to Pontone in about 30 mins. From here you can go on to Ravello, or back to Amalfi. Have fun.

I found the ruins of the mills by accident, and they are quite something for the more adventurous of you. If you continue up the main road of Almafi into the canyon and keep walking up the paved street until the end (there is a private fence blocking the road) behind of which is a small cascade waterfall - then you take the steps to your left that seem to go up to some terraced houses. Keep following the steps then go down the path on the left side of the canyon around the back side of the houses you couldn't get through. Keep following the narrow track up the canyon. You will find the runis of one papermill (of which you can take some overgrown steps down into and then out to the river) or KEEP going up the canyon and you will eventually walk next an an ancient wall with a sheer drop into the stream, and come out at the base of the ruined water mill. Once there you can climb up into the mill over runied steps to the left, or enter the bottom of the mill where the river comes out. Once inside, with a flashlight - and getting your feet wet and with some minor rock climbing skills - you can climb INTO the mill and discover what is left. No people. No trash. No graffiti. Frankly when I was there, it hadn't looked like anyone had come down the path in months. Being the middle of winter, I can imagine why, and being the middle of winter the undergrowth was quite minimal allowing me to access places that during the summer probably look quite impassible due to the vegetation. Quite a find for you urban explorers. Otherwise a great place to have a pick-nick for the lest inclined to risk breaking their neck out in the middle of nowhere.

This is a really nice family run refreshment stop in the Valle de Ferriere/Mulin who have the best fresh lemon juice in Amalfi by a mile, fabulous home produced honey and lemon jam, and great fresh fruit.
Spotlessly clean, and lovely friendly people.
The Valle is beautiful and totally different from the very busy centre of Amilfi which is only a few minutes walk away down the valley. The only sounds are birds and running water, and the waterfalls, although not spectacular in size, provide a lovely backdrop.
If you want a really nice peaceful walk which is not too challenging, do this one!

As it was a hot day and in search of something to do in the shade we decided to do this walk as it was shortish and promised woodland and streams! We were not disappointed. We started at around midday and followed the signs from Amalfi using the Julian Tippett guide; Sorrento, Amalfi Coast and Capri (landscapes) (highly recommended, we had so many lovely walks from this book). Initially on the gentle climb out of Amalfi it was really hot and we wondered if we'd made a mistake but this part of the walk was relatively short and took about 20-30 minutes.
Hot and in need of refreshment we came across an amazing farm shop (Agricola Fore Porta) so we stopped here for granita to help us on our way. This place was brilliant, lovely people serving who were obviously used to hot tourists. As well as granita they had honey and fresh organic fruit and veg for sale that was so tempting. (We stopped again on the way back and had some of their tomatoes with oil, balsamic vinegar and seasoning which were to die for!)
After this the walk continued through the promised woodland, past rolling streams and disused paper mills. It was a magical place and an easy walk. We went as far as the number 13 way marker and did not continue up to Pontone, as we had done that part of the path on a different visit. We retraced our steps back to Amalfi. A wonderful walk not to be forgotten!

Amalfitown is charming but even in September it is very crowded. If you would like to experience a more peaceful and natural side of Amalfi hike up the valley of the paper mills.
You will experience the once working heart of Amalfi.
A side of Amalfi that one never could conceive of from the Piazza dei Duomo.
Keeping the Duomo on your right follow the main walking street up as far as it will go. You will reach the Paper Museum on the left which looked interesting but my husband wasn't having it so we took a sharp right up a small hill and another quick left and began our climb up into the Valle dei Mulini.
Broad stone pathways with occasional steps, some steeper and longer than others, climb along the right side of the ravine where the water flows. There are arched tunnels with cobbled steps and fig and nut trees bowers.The pathways originally and still used by humans and donkeys are bordered above and below by lemon groves and veggie gardens. Ancient homes some with towers rise on each side of the valley. The river, Dragone ,powered the paper mills that made Amalfi the paper capital of medieval Europe. There are ruins of paper mill structures and waterfalls visible in the Valley below. The air is fresh and the jagged mountains rising above with villages nestled among the crags is a charming respite from the frenetic tourism of the port of Amalfitown.
I am in my late 60's but if you go "lentamente",slowly, as the locals say it is definitely doable.
There is a wonderful restaurant called Fore Porta, that is a family run place serving local organic food and Papa's vino. Perfecto.
Honestly, That is as far as we got. It is supposed to get even better higher up. More waterfalls. Next time.

I felt on top of the world after my walk up through the Valle die Mulini! I intentionally left the bustle of Amalfi behind rapidly and walked to the top of the town, where opposite the Paper Museum is the start out of the walk. For a fair while it was steps and surfaced pathways, but you don't notice because you simply can't take your eyes off of the views up the valley which are emerging. When you leave surfaced pathways you are on a trail alongside a bubbling river and you more or less alternate from one fascinating Mill ruins to a beautiful waterfall and then the next mill and so on. 4 or 5 Mills in you come to a mill with a huge archway and beyond it a gorgeous waterfall where I sat and had lunch in the breeze of the plunge pool. In all this way since I'd left Amalfi I may have seen a dozen people. In the town below there are thousands & I think they are missing a trick. At this stage I left the Valle dei Mulini, branching off to the side of the valley and a climb to the beautiful town of Pontone (so I can't comment on the undoubted beauty of the upper valley). The trip up to Pontone offers Vista's of stunning beauty and The chance to visit Torre del Zirro (or similar!) Ruins before a hellish 950+ steps back down into Amalfi. I'm quite fit, but my legs ached for a couple days! Do not attempt to go UP those steps!!!

We want to hike around the Amalfi coast. Did you spend every night in amalfi or did you move to a different town. Want to visit other towns and go to Ravello for concert. Thoughts?

Thanks so much for all of your wonderful reviews on Valle Dei Mulini. I just purchased the sunflower book and waiting for it to arrive in the mail. In the meantime can you please enlighten me on a couple of things. We will have a driver for the day but I don't want to miss this beautiful area. I will be traveling with a couple of teenagers and the last thing they want to do is take a hike, but I don't want to miss this area and I think it would be quite memorable. Is there somewhere you could suggest our driver drop us so that we can take a short walk, maybe an hour or so and then pick us back up. The photos of what I believe was the papermill look beautiful. I would rather see this area and ravello for the greatest part of time and then just see amalfi kind of quickly if necessary. I believe we will have the driver for 8 hours. Is there anything you would be able to recommend? I really appreciate anything you can tell me.

I am a solo traveler, and though I hope to find people to go with on this walk and others, I wonder if that is not the case, is it realistic or wise to think that I can do this walk on my own? I have the Sunflower guide which is extremely detailed, it makes me think that it may be plausible, but I'm not sure.
