Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There are nice views on the seaside and the villages along the road from Positano to Amalfi. Drivers usually stopped at the bayby for a rest and take photos on the scenic environment.

The Village is off the beaten track with incredible views. You can take a break from
The crowds and the commercial part of Amalfi for the true old feeling of Italy.

I am reviewing here a walking tour that was delineated in a tourist map given to me at Hotel La Bussola that begins on Maestra dei Villaggi and heads up the hills and beyond, looping around and returning into Amalfi center. You can catch the trail by taking the steps up to the road from behind La Bussola, to SS163, passing through the tunnel and then beginning up the road.

The map budgets 5 hours for the walk. I did not do the full circuit because of time. I got as far as about Grand Hotel Excelsior up on the Via Papa Leo X (I can't remember the name), having missed the turn off the road to a small church just after reaching the road signs for Pastena.

Once through the tunnel and outside of town, the experience changes dramatically. Whereas downtown Amalfi is jammed with tourists and bustle through the day, climbing up this walk (and it can be vigorous) is like an entry into a quiet world where the views are ever more remarkable as you ascend. The path is dotted with a trio of small churches, each of which has a courtyard area that opens up onto a panorama. The path is not heavily trodden by tourists, so it is something of an escape. Also, you pass through the lemon groves and other private gardens, where apples, figs, prickly pear, walnuts and even squash have fallen onto the path. Such abundance!

This walk was breathtaking, even on a rainy afternoon, and I would absolutely do either this walk or others in the countryside surrounding Amalfi if I had more time. It's a great opportunity to peek beyond the highly trafficked areas, and if you are lucky, you may find a chance to meet some of the locals.

Amalfi is a small community between a rock and a hard place, literally at the base of a steep mountain's ravine and squished up against the road and the Gulf of Salerno. It's mighty small but filled with character. The "royal road of villages" is, to us, the one and only main street through Amalfi. It is filled with shops, homes, the church complex, a little square, and lots of activity and history. Amalfi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason.

Along our walk, there was a very special old fountain from the 18th century with a helpful translation. It was adorned with figurines in a village-like setting, climbing the mountain (much as people living here in the 1700's would have had to do).

Our villa had a back entrance onto Via Maestra dei Villagi. When we were not in a hurry and wanted to take our time we would go up the back terraces and through the big green door out onto the via. There was shade and sunshine, stairs and a gradual slope,up or down depending on which way you were headed. You would see the local houses and vegetable gardens grown in huge pots along the way. Beautifulyl colored vines and flowers adorned the houses. A solid copper door and matching copper starburst window on a simple whitewashed cottage. There were lemon, orange, and fig trees. There was a beautiful quaint little church and a couple of ornate fountains that dispensed water from the mountain. We saw a donkey coming up the trail and every time we went, it was extremely peaceful, we hardly saw a soul. At any given time we could look over our shoulders and see the most amazing ocean views with water so clear and blue like I have never seen anywhere before. Maybe the best part was, there were no cars or buses to watch out for and you could just meander along as you please. Yes it was the longer route but definitely the way to go!

Amalfi is the highlight of Southern Italy. Although, I loved Capri in a previous trip, Amalfi is the golden combination of culture and scenery. On top of anything in Amalfi, is this coastal road offering scenery beyond belief. I took a taxi for the purpose and I do not regret a single Euros paid.

We had the pleasure of renting a car in Rome and staying in Sorrento at the BelAir which is highly recommended. Our first outing was driving the Amalfi coast. It is surely not for everyone but that is the way to get the real experience. It is so nice to travel at your leisure and stop where ever and as often as you like. This Via is just gorgeous ! Would recommend passing downtown Amalfi and using the parking garage that is literally bored into the mountain just past the square.
