The Teatro di San Carlo was designed by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the monarch since Charles wanted a new and larger theatre for Naples to replace the old and dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe.

A must visit in Naples this opera house the first ever built is spectacular. Area around the Opera house shops, buildings is also worth sometime. I found the main streets in Naples quite safe.

I didn't think I liked opera but we were lucky enough to tour this beautiful opera house and sit in a box during a rehearsal with a full orchestra in the pit and opera singers (in jeans) on stage. Our tour ended in Naples and...More

We did a tour of the theatre during daytime but also attended a concert at night. The tour takes you into the Royal box with its lavish decorations as well. It was good to have seen all the small things (like the air conditioning under...More

Alessandro was a wonderful guide. Very knowledgable and passionate about the theatre. Amazing to be inside such a historical building where several famous classical musicians attended or performed!

Very worthwhile tour to see the extravagant interior of great beauty and historical significance. Shows Naples’ importance in the arts world and competitiveness of former rulers. Ask about hometown boy Enrico Caruso.

This theater is breathtakingly beautiful. Our tour was quite short, but gave us a chance to see the beauty of the theater. The king's box was lavish with red velvet and gold statues. There was some interesting information about the kings and queens visits to...More

A magnificent opera house and so historical! My wife and I had a box to ourselves to see my first live opera and it was a thrilling and unforgettable experience. If in Naples this is a must see if at all interested in opera.

The visit of opera was amazing, we recommend it, but be aware that not every guided tour offered on their websites is in English (just one tour in the morning and one in the afternoon - 11.30 and 15.30)
