- Herbert C1,744 contributionsSuper-crowdedDating back to 1536, Via Toledo has evolved into one of the city’s main shopping street today. Stretching for over a kilometer from Piazza del Plebiscito to Piazza Dante, thereby connecting the city’s 2 most important public squares, this busy thoroughfare is not only a vibrant shopping area with all the big chain stores imaginable, but also home to several religious and civil monuments. It is therefore no surprise that the entire street is super-crowded with pedestrians and the occasional vespas jostling for space as they inch through the street. If you have a fear of crowds, avoid this street altogether and explore the historic centre along Via Tribunali instead.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 January 2024
- Michael KSan Jose, California1,107 contributionsIf you don't like crowds, avoid this street in the evening and weekendsUnlike Spaccanapoli or Via Tribunali or any of the streets in Quartieri Spagnoli, Via Toledo is wider. Because of this reason, it doesn't feel as crammed even though it is congested with people especially on weekends. There are also street artists in the evening performing their acts and creating a carnival atmosphere. You can find gelato places and fast food joints on this street, but most restaurants are located on the side streets.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024
- MidwestKathMDetroit, Michigan1,084 contributionsVia Toledo the perfect introduction to Naples!Walking the Via Toledo was an experience, for sure, but a welcome one! Yes, it is crowded and noisy but it is also lined with stores and restaurants and sites to see. Our hotel was along this street so we walked it each day of our visit there. We shopped. We ate. And we enjoyed street music and performers. We stopped to see the historic entrances to palazzi now turned into apartments and car parks and such. We saw and read numerous historical plaques telling us who once lived there. We walked from Via Museo on one end down to the harbor, passing by the Gallerie d'Italie Napoli, Galleria Umberto I, Palazzo Reale, and Piazza del Plebescito. A nice introduction to Naples!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2024

Horribly crowded and overpriced place made for turists and nobody else. Shops, attractions, and other turist traps along the street are generic, you could find them in every turist beaten streets in every city - so ask yourself if it is the reason why you came to Naples. What a relief was to exit the place for far more pleasant and stylish streets of the old town and the Quartieri Spagnoli!

As we were walking up this elegant street, we realized that this must be the area in Naples for exclusive shopping. We saw a lot of shops with fancy and renowned brand names.
The architecture of the buildings is also upper class - beautiful neoclassic and modern building from the XIX. and XX. century.
For the two of us, the most interesting was the narrow part of the street, close to the Piazza Trieste e Trento. Unfortunately, we were caught in a shower or two, so we had to carry an umbrella. But maybe we were lucky as the street was not overcrowded! We even had to descend underground to the Toledo metro station, but we did not see the beautiful platform, which was further downstairs.

Pompei was great, a slow train ride €3 single from garabaldi station. Book tickets on line, Naples underground was good too, again book online.
Lots of bars, cafes, and restaurants, we loved tge narrow old streets
We took the train to Sorrento, it was nice but nothing great.

We googled leather bags in Naples, and were sent to ‘A Curreia. We didn’t know anything about the Via Toledo area, so it was disconcerting to drive through a very rough looking area to get there. You won’t see designer stores here.
This shopping district has a better selection, and a wider range of quality products than the San Lorenzo shopping area in Florence. Sure, they have some really cheap stuff, but they’ve got beautiful, high quality goods too - at much better prices than San Lorenzo.
We bought a beautifully made men’s leather satchel, a fun turquoise leather beach tote, wallets and a men’s backpack at ‘A Curreia. We’re highly pleased with our quality goods and the reasonable prices. Look for this shop. You’ll like it.

Via Toledo was marketed as one of the longest shopping streets in Naples. Compared to Madison Avenue in NYC its more like a crummy/sketchy version of Canal Street in NYC with bootleg merchandise at each corner. There is garbage everywhere, the buildings are old and not maintained. There are sketchy characters even in the daytime. Watch your purse since there were pickpockets and we passed by several people reporting to police. Not a place I would advise going to.

Napoli isn't that big of a city, so we went on our first day to Via Toledo to do some shopping. Via Toledo is the shopping street of Napoli. If you are looking for different (Italian style) clothing, this is your shopping street. The thing is that Napoli is a paradise for menswear. You have many qualitative and cheap menswear stores that will rock your world. Especially for cultures that don't know how to dress, this is amazing. Shops like Gutteridge, Alcott, Dan John, local shoe stores are amazing.
Then again, my first experience with the Neapolitans weren't that good, the sales guy in LUIGI FUSARO shop was so irritating that he eventually showed me the door, he told me to get out because I didn't want to try a trouser. Comparing with the rest (north and mid Italy) the people of the south can be very unfriendly. The moment they understand that you don't want to buy anything they can be very unfriendly...
O and yes you do have the mafia in Napoli, so watch out.

I travel 150,000 miles every year for the past 10 years, almost every major city in Asia, Europe, Americas. My wife and I arrived today in Naples from Istanbul (which was wonderful).
I had read that there are "fixed tariffs" taxis from the airport, we got ripped off immediately by the taxi wanting a higher price and even when paid, tried to hold onto my change.
I had read about thieves, pickpockets etc but felt confident after visiting Suuks in Egypt, Istanbul and other edgy places across China, Taiwan, Korea etc, that I knew what to expect.
We checked into our hotel and within an hour later was walking along Via Toledo, one of the main shopping streets. My wife went into a shop, bought a jacket which I paid for and also talked with the store assistant.
We passed a small cross street when I felt somebody grab my left arm above the wrist as they pulled hard on my watch until the strap broke and they ran off with it up the side street, jumped on the back of a waiting scooter and took off. The police were standing across the road about 20 feet away but it was too late, over in seconds.
So anybody that tells you how "lovely" it is, has their head up their ***
On reflection my wife actually thinks that the thieves were tipped off by the overly friendly shop assistant that may have notified the thieves we were tourists and I was wearing an expensive watch. They clearly had stalked me, set up the scooter at the cross street and were knowledgeable about watches
It really put a damper on the rest of the visit, always looking at scooters, clutching bags, hands in pocket with money/wallet etc.
Apart from that Naples in general is bordering on being a slum, considering its the #3 city in Italy.
The ONLY reason to visit is to go to nearby Pompei, Positano, Sorrento, Amalfi etc.
Naples you can keep, waste of time.
With multiple large cruise ships and unsuspecting tourists, the thieves here have honed it to a point that even an experienced traveler like myself could not even contemplate, so don't think it cannot happen to you!!

Buona vacanza
