From the bay of Naples we could see Castel Sant'Elmo high above the city and just had to go there. It was a long way but the funicular railway made the journey different and exciting. Once there we went straight to the top of the castle....in a lift!!!! That was a first! The castle is enormous and there are people... More

It's not possible to visit the castle rooms, but you can walk and take great pictures of Naples gulf, with Vesuvio vulcan, islands and of course Naples. My wife and I visited it with our 5 months baby and his stroller. Get the metro, walk few minutes and simply enjoy the panorama!

After seeing the views from on top Vesuvius, you leave thinking you can't find a better view than that. You can. The Castel Sant'Elmo has panoramic views of all of Naples and Vomero and although a simple castle, the views are beyond phenomenal. You'll be saying "wow" the whole time. For €5 entrance fee, and a quick elevator ride, you... More

Best panoramic views on all of Naples, Vesuvius and the gulf. Breath-taking scenes. Might be not easy to reach by feet, since it is quite high uphill thus better to take funicular or bus.

At the first sight, it is a long way to walk till the Castel. The ancien jail is not interesting by itself (inside) but the Castel and the place are just wonderful. Panorama pictures. Do not forget an hat...hot up there.. and thirsty !

This was worth the climb - lots of interesting residences to walk by up a cobblestone path - and a view at the end to make it worthwhile. We just walked in and saw fantastic carriages from Napoleonic times, antique royalty boats, paintings, statues, etc. I found it breathtaking at times!

Best on a clear day. Be aware that you don't actually enter the castle. Rather, after paying the entrance fee, you walk down a drive and then up a ramp that leads to the ramparts around the castle. The views are spectacular -- we were able to spot many of the sites we had visited during the previous days of... More
