The impressive spire of the Immaculate Virgin at the center of this square is unmistakable. She is surrounded by amazing churches. The namesake, Gesu Nuovo Church, which faces her is an incredible example of 16th-century Neopolitan baroque architecture on the inside—truly one of the most beautiful churches in the whole city. The outside façade seems very plain in comparison. Don’t let it fool you—go inside and be amazed! On the opposite side is the Gothic Church of Santa Chiara with its breathtaking 18th-century cloister, filled with majolica tiles representing social scenes of Naples in the 1700’s and gorgeous frescoes featuring biblical scenes.

If you visit this square there is a lovely woman Selling hand knitted decorations. For each decoration I bought she wrapped it in brown paper and hand knitted a little flower and attached it with a peg . Amazing !

Lovely square in the heart of the historic centre. Nice resteraunts and bars around for food and drink, and the city sightseeing bus stops on this square.

Surprisingly quite and a lot to see in the Piazza. Big obelisk, the new church and the convent area. Bars and restaurants also.

Nice little piazza we enjoyed viewing on a quiet misty evening from a restaurant on the square. It was a nice unexpected site as we navigated the small Napoli alleys

Largish square fronting the Santa Chiara and the Immaculate Virgin spire. Couple of decent restaurants in the corner of the square, we recommend the one on the right.

We started our walk along the Spaccanapoli -- a straight street that runs down the center of Naples' historic center -- from this square. Though I'd rank it as one of the smaller ones I saw in the city, it had more activity than I came across elsewhere. People milled around its focal point, a 98-feet-high ornate obelisk topped by an effigy of the Virgin Mary. Customers sat at restaurants and some visitors dodged traffic. I had to keep my wits about me to avoid the myriad motor scooters that seemed to fly past.

Buskers played classical guitar music and a wave of visitors flowed into the Church of Gesu Nuovo, a most unusual structure. Formerly a palace, the church retains the original facade, which features diamond-shaped stone projections. After visiting its interior, we continued into the Church of Santa Chiara across the street and its beautiful cloister. That features scores of pillars displaying floral decorations that are connected by benches with various scenes. These churches give much substance to the square and offer a major reason to come here.

Every day for the last two weeks we have come to piazza Gesu just to do some people watching and watch the locals (and tourists)enjoy this lovely space. Some days there are stalls set up selling bric a brac and there are often weddings happening. Great fun to see the local neopolitans all dressed in their finery.

Exploring Napoli on foot, I fell in love with this piazza! It is full of life and encircled with the most striking architecture. Fascinating people fill this square and the whole atmosphere breathes life! Close to Santa Chiara and Piazza Domenico Maggiore. This is a true slice of beautiful Napoli life!

Ideal for those who love everything beautiful, but real.
