Neighbourhood: Piazza Venezia / Ancient City
If all roads lead to Rome, then they all end here. Piazza Venezia and the Ancient City are the very epicenter of the Eternal City. Within a 360-degree turn, Roman history unrolls in front of you, from its ancient beginnings to its 21st century transformations. Whether it’s those historical playgrounds known as the Roman and Imperial Forums, or the side-street shops, trattorie, and churches, this neighbourhood packs a cultural punch and then some. Screaming scooters, battling buses, crazy cars, and lots of foot traffic converge in the area all day long. By dusk, a different vibe emerges as the neighbourhood quiets down. Don't be surprised if you find yourself passing through the Piazza Venezia at least once a day, since it’s the most direct way to get from one side of town to another.

Although this is a very beautiful fountain, it probably gets overlooked because it is dwarfed by the monumental scale and grandeur of the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument building behind it,
This is one of a pair of almost symmetrical fountains flanking the building's staircase. It’s the one on the right hand side. Designed by the sculptor, Pietro Canonica, it represents the Tyrrhenian Sea (the one on the left represents the Adriatic Sea).
The sea is represented in human form by a idealised, muscular man - a kind of ancient Hulk. He is sitting above the fountain, but not in a restful pose. He is looking over his shoulder and is poised as if something has startled him and he’s about to jump up at any moment. Perhaps it is because he appears to be sitting on a Roman she-wolf, which would make anyone jumpy.
Beneath him, water flows from a large semi-circular basin into a pool below. On a hot day, we found it refreshing to sit on the walls around the base for a few minutes, beside the water.

The Tyrrhenian Fountain is part of the Monument in honor of Vittorio Emanuele II, begun in 1885 and inaugurated in 1911.
This fountain is an allegory to the Tyrrhenian Sea, a work by the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica (1869-1959) and was inaugurated at the same time as the monument in which it is located.
When I passed here, this fountain was without water and the human figure on top looked like it had little or no maintenance.

For the Honour of the Emperor Vittorio del Emmanuelle the II was build a majestic monument, "altare della patria" which is named also as the Vittoriano.
It is to the right of the entrance to the Vittoriano, by Piero Canonica, from 1911, one of the two fountains is placed in a symmetrical position, as an adornment of the majestic monument.

It represents him allegorically, with a very muscular male figure and thick hair and beard, the Tyrrhenian Sea lying on the Capitoline Wolf, and with an arm resting on a marble block where a siren is carved.

This fountain is to the right of the monument to King Victor Emmanuel II.
The fountain is the work of Pietro Canonica. Together with Emilio Quadrelli, who built the Adriatic Sea fountain, he worked with Sacconi, designer of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, to finish the monument in the early 1900s.
The fountains were built with a purely decorative purpose and according to that style, very popular at the time, for monumentality that inspired the whole complex.
The Tyrrhenian Fountain is one of the two perfectly symmetrical fountains on either side of the large central staircase of the monument to King Vittorio Emanuele II.
The two fountains have two statues representing the allegories of two great seas that embrace Italy: the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea.
The two statues are supported by a multi-storey base that ends in a semi-circular basin. The water comes out of a crack in the wall, and falls like a fan into the basin below at street level.
The allegory of the Tyrrhenian sea is a figure that lies on a boulder, but in the act of rising with the help of a push with the right arm.
A mermaid is carved into the boulder, perhaps that one of the Greek hero and King of Ithaca, Ulysses, and, at his feet, a Capitoline she-wolf lies quietly.
Interesting.

On the right side of the base of the National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II in Piazza Venezia is a large fountain with a statue symbolizing the Tyrrhenian sea. An attractive part of the overall monument. There is a similar fountain on the other side of the massive stairs.

This is the mate to the Fontana dell’Adriatico located on the other side of the Vittoriano. This fountain represents the Tyrrhenian Sea and the allegorical figure is half raised supporting his weight with his right arm. He sits astride a Capitoline wolf. The fountain features a waterfall flow into a basin that cascades into a large semi-circular bottom basin.

It is unlikely one would need to seek out this fountain, because it is likely one will be visiting the Altar of the Fatherland when visiting Rome. It is diminished somewhat as part of the larger presentation, but it is quite impressive on its own merits.

The Fountain of the Tyrrhenian Sea is the other of the two large fountains in Piazza Venezia. Dedicated to the Tyrrhenian, it stands to the right of the monument of Victor Emmanuel II. The right is dedicated to the Adriatic Sea. Both fountains are super-sized and symmetrical.
