My girlfreind and I visited this museum and it was amazing. Because we’re under 25 we only paid 2 euros each! The museum contains everything from classical art from Van Gogh, a butchered horse and the story behind J.R.R. Tolkien and his countless collection of stories.

Well worth a visit when in Rome. It is so lovely to get away from the noise and crowds of Rome. Some stunning art to view and a small gift shop and cafe. Free lockers are available for your bags. You will need 1-2 hours to visit.

This wonderful museum is an easy walk from central Rome through the Gardens of the Villa Borghese. The pride of lions sprawled on the front steps is your first clue that you have arrived at a special place. In addition to the art gallery, plan to visit the gorgeous restaurant, where the decor brings the green of the park right inside the room. You can get tickets ahead online, but the day we visited there was no line anywhere, and there were plenty of free lockers just inside the door. Have fun!

We visited on a Sunday, needing a change of pace. The gallery is easily reached with a short uphill walk through the park from Flaminio metro station. On arrival late morning, we found it quiet, although it grew slightly busier through mid-day. It proved one of our most enjoyable and even liberating experiences in Italy. Rome is crowded with great classical art, most of it crammed into palaces and described in intensive technical detail by captions, catalogues and apps. You interpret the data and move on. This gallery lives for the other half of your brain. Its huge, bright spaces give you space and time. At first, I felt I needed more detail on each piece - its media and context - but the lack of detail on each work is a provocation to create your own stories and connections. The great salon - the first room that you visit - is huge, its walls almost tiled with images from across the last 250 years. Of course there’s too much to take in depth, but you can just revel in the images there. In the other rooms, the thematic organisation is there, but you find it for yourself. Sometimes it’s in-your-face (quite a lot of war and death at the moment), jokey (like the statuary positioned in dialogue with the contemporary art), and cryptic (the wonderful room devoted to de Chirico). It sparks your own creativity, and of course sometimes outrage. Enjoy it. The gallery is exceptional value for the price of the ticket. Of course there are some weak points - catering (as in many of the Rome museums and galleries) was weak, for example, but overall this was a stimulating high-point to our time in Rome. Whatever your view on modern and contemporary art, I’d happily recommend seeking this gallery out - for the sake of half your brain :-)
