The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.

    Beautiful with good spectacles
The interior is beautiful and decadent in a good way. Staff is friendly and helpful. I went to see a ballet, which was fun, but I bet an opera would’ve been nicer. The bar serves good little sandwiches as well.

    Awesome venue!
This was a once in a lifetime trip and a once a lifetime opportunity to attend the opera! It did not disappoint! Only thing is I wish the selection of seats had been better. We let the computer chose the best seats but I truly think that the seats in the balcony might have been better.

Managed to book on their website for La Traviata opera, assuming it was at the same location, and when the tickets were emailed to me in Italian, which I don’t understand, I didn’t look at the words underneath the date and time until the night of the opera when we were stood outside and the venue was shut. The words I hadn’t understood looked like a street name which I presumed was where I was but it was not. It was another venue 42 mins walk away in the outdoor Caracalla stadium. It then took another hour to wait for Uber taxi that turned up late so we missed the first act. We were also cold at the new venue as we had come dressed for an opera inside! We later had a 45 min walk back to the hotel at 1am!

There was nothing obvious on my email to say it was at a different venue, and nothing on the doors of the theatre to state it wasn’t there either and there were quite a few others that turned up there too! Had we known this we could’ve planned an earlier taxi instead of arranging our evening meal just around the corner from the theatre.

The actual performance was fantastic with English subtitles on a screen either side of the stage and in Italian too.

Visited to hear Verdi, by the resident orchestra.
Great to be back attending a renowned venue, and hearing fantastic renditions of this classic composer.
Well produced and well received performance.

While the production of Ernani was wonderful the theater was disappointing.

The staff were really nice and helpful, everyone we came in contact with. An usher actually escorted me half way to the cafeteria to buy water.

The production and acoustics were great. The ubbertittles were difficult to read from my vantage point, they had them in English and Italian but they are small and hard to read.

The theater was a big disappointment, I had expected a grand opera house, like in Paris, Barcelona. Milano, Vienna, instead the front is a horrible sort of modern facade with no charm whatsoever. The interior apperas to date from an earlier era and it is unique because with the exception of the orchestra section and the "bleachers", the entire theater has individual boxes. It could be beautiful, but it is not. It is run down, faded, and a little depressing. Outside the perimeter it is covered with garbage all over the sidewalks.

How sad that such good performance was being held in a potentially beautiful venue but so lack of upkeep and so neglected.

It is scandalous how the Rome Opera House can put up seats for sale for a ballet from which, if you are normally seated, you cannot see the stage.
The limited visibility of the second row, declared on one of the two tickets (Side boxes PLT 1 ORD DI, stage 5 DX, stalls D, row 2, seat 4), forces the spectator to stand for the entire duration of the show, leaning forward close to those who occupy the front row, with the result of barely seeing 1/4 of the stage. If you sit down the view is limited to the orchestra pit only.
The second ticket from the same unfortunate balcony, due to the side walls that divide the boxes, to be precise row 1 seat 1, being comfortably seated you can only see the orchestra. If desired, the spectator can lean over the parapet and, sitting on the lace of his armchair, can see a part of the show from a position that to define as uncomfortable is to pay him a compliment... too bad that by doing so, the view of all the other spectators of the same is limited stage.
We appreciated the mastery of the orchestra in the Nutcracker. Too bad we couldn't see the ballet.
Our applause goes to the organizers for having filled the theater in every order and degree in the show on December 30, 2023, "even from absurd places like ours which don't require a seat's view of the audience, but not even such a mockery.
Cordially,
Massimiliano Coscetta

I went to see Teatro dell'Opera's production of Carmen at the Baths of Caracalla and found it TERRIBLE. I am an American theatre designer, love original productions, and was excited to see Carmen set on the US/Mexican border - politically, I feel, is important to bring to the public eye. Unfortunately, the director seemed to end his work at the location and didn't bother to figure out how to make it meaningful or how to make it flow with the story, lyrics, or elegant music. Why bother with the setting if it did nothing but confuse the audience and distract from the story? In addition, as an American, I was appalled by the racist portrayal of the Mexican people who were shown to be vulgar and brutal with Mexican women seen embracing their abusers and Carmen, a pole dancer!!! Hip hop (NOT Mexican) was poorly attempted to Bizet's music as the opera began and was a terrible distraction, and the other "dancing" in the opera and background "choreographed" movements appeared to be poorly improvised, at best. I couldn't help thinking that the director's intention was simply to shock the audience with something "different." Rather than actually saying something meaningful about the setting, he just threw in the same-gender coupling, a transvestite prancing around the stage, and female performers (not male) arbitrarily stripping down to their underwear to change clothes for no apparent reason. Needless to say, I left at intermission and MANY others also left at the same time.

Very special visit with my adult children, all retired professional dancers, to see the ballet Don Quixote. We sat on the main floor. The seats were very comfortable, and with surprisingly good views. Thankfully I read other reviews and learned that the box seats have obstructed views. I’m so glad we sat on the main floor, it was worth the cost.

This was our first opera and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The staff were excellent and welcoming on arrival, our box seats were superb and we enjoyed a wonderful performance of Eugene Onegin. The orchestra were brilliant and their were some wonderful stage performances .

This was my first opera experience

Most operas are 3-5 hours long with multiple intermissions. It’s not required that you dress up, but I would recommend at least business casual. You cannot take drinks into the theatre, but everyone rushes to the bar at intermission for a drink. An English translation of the dialogue is shown on a screen above the stage, which is nice.

We purchased “limited visibility” tickets. This is for the box seats lining the side of the theatre. Normally 3-4 people per box. I was unable to see about 1/3 of the stage. However, the music and experience was great. Hard to beat for $40 and tickets purchased a day before the opening.

A lovely evening with fantastic performance and atmospheric venue. Huge spectacle and great performances across the board. Seats down on floor seem best - many box seats will have restricted view.
