It was sumptuous with colors and creativity, a real museum, a memory so unforgettable that I wanted to show a new generation…
A disaster the tickets can only be purchased online and there…….it’s big game fishing.
You have all the tools missing the fish. Unable to get tickets. What a pity !

Not worth it. Not to mention the hopeless digital procedure to obtain entry tickets, the security check (passports and such) makes you unwelcome in the Palazzo in advance. The tour in almost unintelligible English lasts an hour, and is downright unnecessary and uninteresting, because the originals of what could be seen are in Naples. The pretension is breathtaking, but you're wasting your time. It is absolutely not worth the effort, let alone the money, to visit this unsympathetic mess. Do not!

I bought a flexible ticket to visit Palazzo Farnese with an extra 10% charge. Their website said that with the flexible ticket I would be able to make changes to my booking “free of charge and at any time, subject to tickets availability” by contacting the Reservations Department “within 7 days from the scheduled tour date”. As I had an issue and I could not make the scheduled date, I contacted them 4 days in advance and they were inflexible and very unfriendly in not allowing any change because it was not at least 7 days in advance.
I pointed out that their language was misleading and that I had a very bad customer experience.
They were very intimidatory in their response and threatened to sue me if I dared post any negative reviews.
I want to share this unpleasant experience with all the other visitors: beware of flexible tickets.

Security checks at the entrance as detestable as they are scandalous and which spoil the visit itself!
Guide - on the other hand - remarkable who introduced us to the entire palace. A little disappointed by the famous Carracci gallery, whose frescoes seemed very pale and rather disappointing to me (those of the Farnesina seem superior to me.
Mission accomplished: I saw it but will not go back…

I have been trying to tour the Palazzo Farnese for years as every previous attempt had been thwarted by restoration closings. This year I made yet another attempt and had one of those “Eureka” moments: tickets were available, even though several of the major art works were unavailable due to restoration, and the Carracci Gallery would be closed until March of 2015. There is but one English Tour per week which is conducted on a Wednesday at 5:00. Because the tour is size sensitive, restricted to under 20 people, I’d suggest going on-line and reserving your tickets early. The price is only 5Euros/person. The tour started outside the Farnese where attendance was noted, then quickly moved inside to a courtyard, traveled briefly to the beautiful, peaceful garden behind the Palazzo, then up a series of stairs to several rooms where our guide described each and every detail regarding not only the art, but the history of this amazingly beautiful villa, now home to the French ambassador. Our well-prepared guide, Lucy, speaking with amazing fluency in English though French, provided commentary that was not only informative, but then answered all questions that were posed to her. Nothing seemed outside her realm of knowledge. As we progressed from room to room, I inquired about our ability to view the amazing frescoes in the Room of the Deeds which is now the French ambassador’s office. Unfortunately, this room is private and is closed to the public. As we approached the end of our tour, a petite woman came out an adjoining office, approached Lucy and carried on a brief conversation in French, before Lucy turned to us. “I’d like to introduce to you the French Ambassador who has invited us to tour her private office.” We briefly stood in amazement, then thanked her for such a generous opportunity to view these splendidly decorated frescoes from the mid-16th century. They did not disappoint, and for me, were the highlight of the tour. I can’t guarantee that future tours of the Palazzo Farnese will reap such benefits, but I do hope you’ll sign up and see one of the most astonishingly gorgeous private villas in Rome. And with any luck, you’ll have Lucy as your guide!

We booked on line, and when we arrived for the guide said we were not on the list. They refused to let us take the tour, and with the guards standing there with machine guns staring at us we certainly were in no position to argue.

Two days layer I got an e-mail from the organization saying that they had found our reservation; by that time, of course, we had left Rome.

Hurray! I am happy to report the renovation of Carracci Gallery is now finished and open for viewing. And a beautiful gallery it is indeed! All secular in its story and subjects which is unusual for Rome where religious themes prevail. Colours are so vibrant and frescoes so beautiful it is well worth the trouble of booking a visit via inventerrome at only 9E per person. The imposing renaissance palazzo is now French Embassy, so security is tight and photography is not permitted. During the tour you are taken to see also some other rooms, the courtyard and charming little garden. The tours are in French and Italian a few times a week and only once a week in English. The lady guide was very knowledgeable, spoke good English and had a nice rapport with the group. This is yet another bonus-there were only 10-15 of us and we had all the place to ourselves. All that was open to public that is. Fantastic experience! Make sure you have your passport or ID card with you.

The present site of the French Embassy (and the setting for Act 2 of "Tosca"!), this opulent edifice boasts architectural detail by Michelangelo and frescoes by Carraci. One can book reservations for tours online, but must be made well in advance. Most tours are in french, some in Italian and a paltry few in English. the latter tend to booked WAY in advance. A good way to get on tours is to sign up for the italian tours. The guides are french speaking, but their Italian is simple enough one can get the gist of what they are saying. Tours are an hour, and limited to 25.

My Palazzo Farnese tour in English was pre-booked for 5PM and I joined the line for the security check at 4:40PM. The Palazzo belongs to the French Embassy, so needless to say that security check was very thorough. Actually, there were two security checks: one outside and another one inside. Do not carry big bags!!!

The tour was pretty interesting, but the interior did not strike me as something out of the ordinary by Rome's standards. The rooms are empty because all the precious collections of the Farnese family are in Naples now. However, there are two highlights which certainly made the visit very special.

1. The Room of Maps with spectacular frescoes by Annibale Carracci and his school: "The Love of Gods"

2. The exterior and the courtyard designed by Antonio da Sangallo. Michelangelo also contributed to some elements of the architectural design of this magnificent palazzo.

And for me personally this visit meant one more thing: the second act of one of my favorite operas, Puccini's "Tosca" takes place in Palazzo Farnese. This is where Tosca kills the evil chief of police, Scarpia, who tortured and condemned to death her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi.
