About
The Antica Caciara Trasteverina is an ancient shop in the heart of Rome whose name was given by the same "transteverins": here, in fact, the shepherds broght their cheeses (called "caci" or "caciotte") from the roman countryside. The shop, founded in 1900, is run today by Roberto Polica and his wife Anna. Roberto, thanks to the passion inherited by his father Antonio and his grandfather Albino, lets know to all his clients hand-made and high quality italian products. Professionality and kindness make the Antica Caciara Trasteverina a shop loved not only by the romans, but by all the people who visited it once in a life.

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

Myself and a friend went on a girls holiday to Rome , the place was amazing but we wanted to get away from the tourist parts for a while, and we stumbled upon this gem! The people who worked there were so friendly ! Me and my friend love wine and cheese nights but didn't know what to get. A lovely man suggested a delicious cheese and red wine - the wine happened to be the shops own . Definitely recommend ! We went back several times , mostly for the wine and cheese haha but also to say hello to the owners .

My wife and I were late for a proper lunch in Trasteverina, Rome. Most of the good dishes were gone in an excellent nearby fast food restaurant. Then we saw Antica Caciara where there were a huge variety of cheese and cured meat. We did not know what to have. A very friendly lady (most probably one of the owners - Anna) made recommendations for bread, cheese and meat that would go perfect and make a great sandwich. We had an excellent lunch, much better than paninis we had in some restaurants. Much later, I noticed from the TA reviews that we coincidentally found maybe the best family run cheese and meat shop in Rome for a simple but amazing sandwich. It was a great coincidence. Next time we will definitely visit there to buy cheese to take home. Highly recommended.

All I can say is I went back to this place 4 times in my 7 days I was in Italy. 3 for more cheese and 1 time for bread. I wanted to buy pork cheek but was advised that I can't bring it back into the US. I was grateful for that since they could have easily had me learn the hard way.
I believe I purchased 6 different cheeses and the store shrink wrapped it for me to bring back home. The store has many varieties of cheese, wine, pasta and meats for everyone to sample and buy. I am so glad we found this place.

Home-cured delicacies, regional specialities and a family business that is truly passionate in all they do. It’s a pleasure to be here and let the staff explain the stories behind the incredible flavours on the shelves. I fill my suitcase up here every time I have to leave Italy.

We stopped here on our last evening to grab some meat and cheese to take home. We took a whole guanciale (cured pork cheek - €12.50/kg) and a giant hunk of 18 month aged parmigiana reggiano (€25/kg). We tasted the latter, which was definitely fresher than what we get back home in France. They vacuum packed each for us and gave us some care instructions for when we get home (removing them from the plastic and keeping them in cloth in a cool place, with wrap only on the cut edge as we use the pork). The owners were very friendly and helpful. Even though a lot of foodie tourists shop here, there were also many locals and my shopping around confirmed that the prices are competitive.

For me traveling to Rome is not complete without a visit to Antica Caciara in Trastevere. A super experience. Splendid cheese and charcuteri. And the most kind treatment. It was founded in 1900 and the owners are third generation.

I have been here before. Always drop in just before leaving Rome. To buy cheese, sausages and other italian specialities.
It is clear they they do cater for tourists as well as locals. Meaning that they are used to tourists requests, and to advise non-italians. You may - just possibly - find a place with slightly cheaper prices. But you wil not - repeat NOT - find any italian shop with a better service. And you may rest assured that you are treated square and fair and the quality of the products offered is simply outstanding. I would not buy italian food anywhere else in Rome!

This is without doubt the best cheese shop anywhere - not just in Rome!
The cheese, ham, sausage - well everything in the shop are awesome - can't be beaten, AND what really elevates this place to the superior level is the service and warmth that greets you from the second you enter.
Every time we are in Rome, we go there, we have even driven down from Toscana and flown up from Brindisi with the sole purpose of visiting the shop and stock up with parmesan and more before returning to Denmark.
Roberto is a remarkabel person. Always entusiasttic, smiling and determent to give you the best possible service. When we enter we are greeted as old friends - even if everybody is, we do think he remembers us. Regardless, you always leave the shop feeling happy that such a person and shop still exists in this day and age. May they both live forever!

Thank you very much for your comment! We are delighted and proud to know that every time you do so many km just to visit us. As you underlined, we always try to give our best service to every client and, by this way, it's not complicated to remember most of them. We do this work with love and passion, nothing else. Maybe this is our only trick. ;) Arrivederci a presto. Roberto e Anna

I was lucky enough to live above this charming shop for my 4 months in Rome. Since I'm not a cheese connoisseur, the shop owner Roberto was always eager to give me suggestions and let me try the products. They have delicious cheeses for a good price, but the real gem is the people who work there. You'll miss a big part of Trastevere if you don't check out this little place.
