This was the poorest experience of out two week cruise and I feel that it is only due to the cruise ships that it has this level of visitors.
I have an interest of Roman history and am keen to visit places like this but what I found was a neglected deserted site. It was a Sunday but there was little sign of life.
The town did have some shops but this hardly made a worthwhile cruise ship stop.

The Mole Vanvitelliana looks interesting from the outside and in the photos taken from above but I was quite disappointed when I got there. It’s poorly maintained and there isn’t anything really interesting inside. There is a museum though, so you might be lucky and catch a good exhibit. If you’re passing by, popping in wouldn’t hurt, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it. There are, however, events in the summer that are supposed to be great, so don’t get discouraged from attending those by the unattractiveness of the place itself.

Falling down piece by piece . It should be interesting discover the story of this site , but now dirty , quite abandoned also there were an important exibition. completely neglected.

La Mole was the highlight of my trip to Ancona. Sitting (historically) strategically near the port, it is well worth having a look at. Crossing the short land-bridge to enter the external walls, it feels like many old buildings: full of character, charm, in need of some repair, etc. However, when you walk through to the centre square, the feeling is completely different. On one side you have the restored walls of the building, on the other, the scarred, bruised, and neglected walls that shows its age. It's not a huge space, but it's easy to lose a good hour examining the place.

We could see this building from the ship as we docked and I was intrigued by the contrast this brings to the area of the port and the differing architectural design. Even though it is quite different it actually fits very well and adds something extra. I would have liked to have visited but alas time constraints meant we didn't get across to that side of the city. Shame.

If you've got free time in Ancona, maybe while waiting for a ferry to Greece, go check out the port, wander all around the bits and firemen's firefighting boats, see the yachts moored and get a real deep breth of fresh air, I really loved walking around the port to the far end of the pier , where there were fire-fighting boats, thought they were really neat. Only drawback is the city is above and you've got to climb up some steep streets, but they are very pictoresque, in order to get back up to the old city. While in Ancona vivisting relatives, we ate at a wonderful restaurant called "Il Buco di Bacco" (Bacchus' Hole in the wall), with excellent fish dishes, like a carpaccio of very well-soaked salt cod, which just melted in the mouth, with olive oil and lemon on top, and the typical salt cod dish so loved by Garibaldi and his red-shirts, excellent. There is very interesting art in the pretty dark locale , with suggestive lighting and many neat old knick knacks around on tables and walls to interest one's curiousity. The wine list is extensive, what else would one expect when it's dedicated to Bacchus?

We visited the Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona whilst docked in the port for a sunny Sunday in June.
We had opted to explore the town on foot and had prepared our own agenda of points of interest to visit, this being the final attraction on our list before returning to the ship.
The walk to the building took us along the harbour front and then via an impressive archway (the Porta Pia), before crossing what appeared to be an abandoned railway. I had originally assumed that the building was a Napoleonic era costal defence facility but we have subsequently discovered that it was actually a quarantine point for incoming passengers and goods.
Arriving early afternoon we passed up through a short tunnel with a fine brick vaulted roof to the inner courtyard surrounded on all sides by what appeared to be ‘barrack’ style buildings. In the middle of the courtyard there was white marble structure and to one side an artistic sculpture of two men carrying a silver boat.
Apart from another couple, the whole place was deserted and there did not seem to be any information on the buildings former (or current), use. There was another tunnel allowing access to a lower courtyard area to the front but again totally deserted.
Glad that we went, if you like buildings or architecture you will find much here to appeal but on the day of our visit there was no sign of life here and our overall rating reflects this.

Went in here on a Sunday morning as it was open, but I think it was only for clearing up after an event the previous evening as cleaners were trying to tidy up the rubbish in the courtyard area.
In the courtyard area, the only thing of interest was a modern life size sculpture of two men carrying an upside down boat.
Building could be put to better use but definitely needs some renovations. It just looks scruffy.
Shame as it is architecturally interesting.

we walked all along the port area to see this. the center is hallow and in need of serious repairs. the museum inside was closed until 1700?
there was a setup for a theater festival. we took nap under shade of central statuary for 1/2hr and walked back. don't waste your time unless you just like to walk

this building is between the railway station and the port 15 minutes on foot. It's more interesting see it from outside

Ho un concerto la prossima settimana, li sono presenti delle tribune dove è possibile sedersi e guardare lo spettacolo oppure c'è solo la piazza? vorrei evitarmi la fila chilometrica XD
